In this paper the laminate design parameters are researched to maximize the performance index of a composite pressure vessel. The pressure-resistant performance and the light-weight concept with contained internal space are implied in the performance index. To maximize the performance index, the three design variables that the thickness of each of helical and hoop layers and the length of hoop layer are considered under the assumption of fixed internal space. To optimize the variables, the response surface method is introduced for construction of the surrogate model and the ANOVA(analysis of variance) is performed to evaluate the effects of the variables. The optimization problem is formulated to maximize performance index under the burst pressure constraint. To verify the effectiveness of the research, numerical analyses are performed for the optimum model.
Since the wireless optical communications system transmits informations through the atmosphere, it is subject to many effects of the constituent materials of atmosphere. The turbulence effect always exists in both clear and cloudy days. It causes a beam wandering, breathing, and scintillation. These disadvantageous phenomena degrade the performance of an optical communications system. In this paper, I designed a refractive index measuring system and subcarrier ASK optical communications system. Through this system I measured refractive index in May and in August. From these measurements, the minimum value of the refractive index in these period was about ${\approx}10^{-15}[m^{-2/3}]$ at night time and the maximum value was about ${\approx}10^{-12}[m^{-2/3}]$ at day time. The refractive index structure parameter. BER(bit error rate), and the burst length were measured simultaneously in these measurements. the theoretically predicted BER and the measured values showed a good agreement.

This study was carried out to acquire basic data necessary for the use of non-wood pulp. Various chemical pulping methods for rice straw to achieve higher yield, lower Kappa No. were investigated and then the physical properties of various pulps were tested. The results of this study were as follows: When various chemical pulps (Soda, Soda-AQ, Soda-$H_2O_2$, Soda-$Na_2S_2$, AS, AS-AQ, AS-$Na_2S_2O_3$, AS-$Na_2S_2O_4$, Kraft) were produced with rice-straw, the pulps with the highest yield and lowest Kappa No. were obtained with Soda-$Na_2S_2$and AS-$Na_2S_2O_4$pulps. For the breaking length, Soda and Soda-additive pulps(7.5~9.2km) were better than AS and AS-additive pulps(6.2~8.1km). Similarly, for the burst index, Soda and Soda-additive pulps(6.0~7.0 kPa.$m^2$/g) were better than AS and AS-additive pulps(4.5~6.3 kPa.m$^2$/g). But the tear index was showed 21.8-30.9 mN.$m^2$/g with a little different between pulping methods.

In general, the entire of paper mulberry bark, which is not cut into pieces with an appropriate length, have been used in the pulping. This kind of pulping method couldn't accomplish the improvement of beating and sheet forming efficiency. For this reason, we investigated the effects of the cutting length of paper mulberry bast fiber on pulping and Hanji (Korean traditional paper) properties, in order to develop high quality Hanji manufacturing process. The cutting length variation of paper mulberry white bast did not great effects on pulp yields. The pulp yields based on pulping methods were sulfomethylated pulping av. 57.4%, alkali-hydrogen peroxide pulping av. 55.4%, and alkaline pulping av. 53.5% respectively. The optical properties such as brightness, opacity, scattering coefficient, and absorption coefficient were slightly improved by the increase of paper mulberry white bast cutting length. The increase of paper mulberry white bast cutting length resulted in poor sheet formation. Physical properties such as breaking length, TEA, tear index, burst index, and folding endurance were slightly improved by the increase of cutting length. The modified pulping processes, which used sulfomethylated method and alkali-hydrogen peroxide method, showed better pulp and sheet properties than conventional alkaline pulping.

To produce the raw material used for printing and writing paper or high quality tissue, MOWs that were consisted of white ledger, colored ledger and old newspaper were bleached with EoP and EoPY(FAS) method, the EoP bleaching process gave the improvement in brightness and a high color removal efficiency. Especially, MOW B(initial brightness: 59.1% ISO) that contained much old newspaper showed the higher bleaching efficiency than those of MOW A(initial brightness: 68.3%). After EoPY(FAS) bleaching, MOW's brightness was increased from 68.3% ISO to 84.3∼84.0% ISO, and from 59.1% ISO to 78.7∼79.2% ISO, respectively. Also the tensile and burst index of bleached pulps decreased by 10∼30%. The tear index slightly decreased or halted at the same range as unbleached pulps.

This study is a continuation of the previous experimental analysis and is mostly focused on handsheet strength properties. Four completely different fibers, which were Hw-BKP, SW-BKP, White ledger, and OCC, were selected to investigate the effect of mechanical pre-treatment by Hobart mixer on handsheet strehgth properties. After equal time mechanical pre-treatment, the fibers were refined with laboratory valley beater for 10, 20 and 30 minutes, and handsheets were prepared from the fibers for physical strength comparison. Handsheets from SW-BKP and OCC showed 5-30% increase of breaking length, burst index, tear index, and compression index while handsheets from HW-BKP and White ledger no increase except tear index. In Hobart mixer pre-treatment, HW-BKP and White ledger fibers were easily attached to the wall of the mixer bowl and mechanical action was not effectively applied. The fiber length of Hw-BKP and White ledger were 0.837 mm and 1.591 mm, respectively, while SW-BKP and OCC were 2.744 mm and 2.033 mm, respectively, in weight weighted length. The effective mechanical pre-treatment seems to be related to the fiber length. Tear indexes of the pre-treated furnish were much higher than no pre-treatment at the same breaking length level.

In order to know the pathogenesis of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in association with the oxidative stress by neutrophils, the role of platelet activating factor (1-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-snglycero-3-phosphocholine, PAF) was investigated during acute lung injury induced by interleukin- $1{\alpha}$ (IL-1) in rats. An insufflation of IL-1 into the rat's trachea increased the acetyltransferase activity in the lung and the increase of PAF content was followed. As evidences of acute lung injury by neutrophilic respiratory burst, lung leak index, myeloperoxidase activity, numbers of neutrophils in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, neutrophilic adhesions to endothelial cells and NBT positive neutrophils were increased after IL-1 treatment. In addition, a direct instillation of PAF into the trachea caused acute lung leak and the experimental results showed a similar pattern in comparison with IL-1 induced acute lung injury. For the confirmation of oxidative stress during acute lung leak by IL-1 and PAF, a histochemical electron microscopy was performed. In IL-1 and PAF treated lungs of rats, the deposits of cerrous perhydroxide were found. To elucidate the role of PAF, an intravenous injection of PAF receptor antagonist, WEB 2086 was given immediately after IL-1 or PAF treatment. WEB 2086 decreased the production of hydrogen peroxide and the acute lung leak. In ultrastructural study, WEB 2086 mitigated the pathological changes induced by IL-1 or PAF. The nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) was activated by PAF and this activation was inhibited by WEB 2086 almost completely. Based on these experimental results, it is suggested that the PAF produced in response to IL-1 through the remodeling pathway has the major role for acute lung injury by neutrophilic respiratory burst. In an additional experiment, we can also come to conclude that the activation of the NFkB by PAF is thought to be the fundamental mechanism to initiate the oxidative stress by neutrophils causing release of proinflammatory cytokines and activation of phospholipase $A_2$.

The effects of fillers on the wet end dewatering and paper properties were investigated in order to confirm the possibility that the fillers can be used as a means for saving energy in papermaking process. The performance of GCC, PCC and talcs were evaluated. The dewatering in wire and wet press was improved by the increase of filler addition, but it was observed that the dewatering behavior was depended by the filler characteristics. PCC was superior to other fillers in the bulk, opacity, air permeability and stiffness while the lowest tensile and burst index were obtained. We found that the response on the wet end dewatering and paper properties were affected greatly by the filler characteristics including particle shape and size.

This study was carried out to acquire basic data necessary for the use of non-wood pulp. It investigated various chemical pulping methods using bamboo to achieve higher yield lower kappa no. and then the physical properties of various pulps were tested. The results of this study were as follows. When various chemical pulps(Soda, Soda-AQ, Soda-AQ-H2O2, Soda-urea, AS, AS-AQ, Kraft) were produced with bamboo. the pulps with the higher yield and lower kappa no. were AS-AQ and Kraft. In the case of the breaking length Soda pulps(5.77∼6.46 km) showed the greatest and Soda-urea pulps(3.81∼4.522km) showed the lower value. Similarly for the burst index Soda pulps (3.28∼3.50 kPa$.$m2/g) were the best and Soda-urea pulps(2.29∼2.39 kPa$.$m2/g) were worst. On the other hand the tearing indexes of AS-AQ pulps(73.6∼89.7mN$.$m2/g) showed the tendency which was higher then those of other pulps.
