Streaming video is expected to become a key service in the developing heterogeneous wireless network. However, sufficient quality of service is not offered to video applications because of bursty packet losses. An effective solution for packet loss in wireless network is to perform a proper concealment at the receiver. However, most concealment methods can not conceal effectively the consecutively damaged macro blocks, since the neighboring blocks are lost. In the previous work, bidirectional motion vector tracking (BMVT) method has been proposed which uses the moving trajectory feature of the damaged macro blocks. In this paper, a channel-adaptive redundancy coding method for the better BMVT error concealment is presented. The proposed method provides enhanced video quality at the cost of a little bit overhead in the wireless error-prone network.
In this paper, we analyzed cell loss rate performance for random traffic sources in wireless ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) access architecture, which consists of access node and wireless channel. Applying queueing model to cell level at access node and considering burst error characteristics in wireless channel, we derived a formula about the cell loss rate of the random traffic in the wireless ATM access architecture. We also applied FEC(Forward Error Correction) schemes to improve the cell loss rate of random traffic. When we applied FEC schemes in the wireless ATM access architecture, we confirmed that the concatenated code provides the most superior performance compared to any other codes.
High-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) is generated from a nuclear burst at high altitudes above the Earth, the electromagnetic fields reach the ground nearly simultaneously with regard to the operation time of systems. The aim of this analysis is to inquire about HEMP characteristics and to analyze about effect in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Specifically, HEMP characteristics are classified field sources, spatial coverage, time domain behavior, frequency spectrum and field intensities in this study. Bits error rate (BER) of the receiver with the software simulation is confirmed for the HEMP effect. Q-factor made a difference about interference duration by transfer characteristics of system. When Q factor is smaller, the recovery time from HEMP interference is short. To the contrary, if the Q factor is larger, the recovery duration is lasted longer by 300-600%.

Reed-Solomon(RS) code which is especially effective against burst error is studied as a forward error correction technique in this ppaer. The circuits of RS encoder and decoder for ASIC implementation are designed and presented employing modified Euclid's algorithm. The functionalities of the designed circuits are verified though C programs which simulates the circuits over the various errors and erasures. The pipelined circuits using systolic arrays are designed for ASIC realization in VHDL, and verified through the logic simulations. Finally the circuit synthesis of RS encoder and decoder can be achieved.

Recently, four speech coding techniques, namely, SBC-APCM(sub-band coding adaptive PCM), RPE-LPC(regualr pulse excitation linear predictive codec), MPE-LTP(multi-pulse excited long-term prediction) and CELP (code-excited linear prediction) are proposed for digital mobile radio applications. However, a performance comparison of these coders in the Rayleigh fading environment has not been made yet. In this paper, the performances of the four spech coders in the random bit error and burst error environment are investigated. For the channel coding of SBC-APCM, RPE-LPC and MPE-LTP, the sensitivity of output bit stream is measured and a bit selective forward error correction is provided acording to the measured bit sensitivity. And for an attempt to improve the performance of CELP, an optimum quantizer is applied for transmitting scalar quantities in CELP. However, an improvement over the conventional approach is found to be negligible. For the channel coding of CELP, Reed-Solomon code, Golay code, convolutional code of rate 1/2 shows the best performance. Finally, from the simulation results, it is concluded that CELP is the best candidate for digital mobile radio and is followed by MPE-LTP, SBC-APCM and RPE-LPC.

In this paper the decoder of nonbinary code satisfying R>1/t has been designed and constructed, where R is the code rate and t is the error correcting capability. In order to design the error trapping decoder, the concept of covering monomial is used and them the decoder system using the (15, 11) Reed-Solomon code is implemented. Without Galois Fiedl multiplication and division circuits, the decoder system is simply constructed. In the decoding process, it takes 60clocks to decode one code word. Two symbol errors and eight binary burst errors are simultaneously corrected. This coding system is shown to be efficient when the channel error probability is approximately from $5{\times}10^-4$~$5{\times}10^-5$.

To implement satellite B-ISDN/ATM network, it needs to gurantee reliable transport via satelite in the poor BER environment. So, it requires to use channel coding (FEC:Forward Error Correction) schemes for improvement of BER performance, but these coding effects evoke burst errors and degradation of the QoS. Therefore we have to investigate new algorithm that compensates these weaknesses. We consider convolutional coding and concatenated coding among FEC schemes as FEC for satellite transmission and choose different compensational algorithm by the error characteristics of the using type of FEC. In using concatenated coding, this paper proposes the satellite system structure for interconnection to the terrestrial network and proposes the channel coding algorithm for improvement of transmission performances. We execute performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm by computer simulation. In detail, we propose 4 types of application ATM cell to the block coding(Reed-Solomon) and propose the new 55 byte ATM cell that enforces the error correction capability of cell header by the BCH coding. Then we propose the outer interleaverand the cell unit interleaver that evoke maximum coding effect of BCH code.

This paper is the FPGA Implementation of Reed-Solomon Encoder that is one of Error control Codes. Reed-Solomon codes are block-based error control codes with a wide range of applications in digital communications. RS codes are strong on burst errors because it process signals as symbol. We simulate this system using Matlab from Mathworks and design it using System Generator from Xilinx. We refer Matlab source in Implementation of Reed-Solomon Error Control Coding for Compressed Images by Simon Anthony Raspa.

Digital satellite communication systems are usually integrated with terrestrial systems to provide various services. In these cases, they should satisfy the performance objectives defined by the terrestrial systems. Recommendation ITU-R S.1062 specifies the error performance objectives of digital satellite communication systems operating below 15 GHz. The error performance are given in terms of bit error probability divided by the number of the average bit errors in the burst ($\alpha$). This paper presents a theoretical method to estimate $\alpha$ that is a very important parameter in the satellite communication systems to analyze the error performance objectives. We show performance estimation result of DVB-RCS turbo code using the presented method, and verify them by comparing to the simulation results.

Multi-layered video coding that provides scalability across the visual content has emerged for easily adaptive service over current heterogeneous network. However, the network is still error prone environment so that video service may suffer packet loss or erroneous decoding of the video. Especially distortion caused by the burst error may propagate to several pictures until intra refreshing, which will raise a terrific degradation of picture quality. To overcome the problem at terminal independently, we propose a new error concealment algorithm for the multi-layered video coding. The proposed method uses the similarity of between layers in the multi-layered video coding and POCS (Projections Onto Convex Sets) which is a powerful error concealment tool, but heavily dependent on initial values. To find adequate initial value which can reduce iteration times as well as achieve high performance, we took consideration into both features of layered approach coding and the correlation in neighbor blocks. The simulation results show that the proposed concealment method works well.
