Numerical investigation of potential mitigation measures for poundings of seismically isolated buildings

  • During very strong earthquakes, seismically isolated buildings may experience large horizontal relative displacements, which may lead to poundings if an insufficiently wide clearance is provided around the building. This paper investigates, through numerical simulations, the effectiveness of using rubber bumpers, which could be attached at locations where it is likely to have impacts, in order to act as shock-absorbers. For the simulation of the dynamic behavior of such rubber bumpers during impacts, a nonlinear force-based impact model, which takes into account the finite thickness of the rubber bumpers, has been developed. Subsequently, a series of parametric analyses are performed to assess the effect of the gap size, the earthquake characteristics and the thickness, compressive capacity and damping of the bumpers. The stiffness of the moat wall is also parametrically considered during poundings of a seismically isolated building, as another potential mitigation measure for poundings of seismically isolated buildings.

  • One of the objectives to prevent building pounding between two adjacentstructures is to considerseparation distance or decrease relative displacement during seismic excitation. Although the majority of building codes around the world have basically suggested some equations or approximately recommended various distances between structuresto avoid pounding hazard, but a lot of reportsin zone of pounding have obviously shown thatsafety situation or economic consideration are not always provided due to the collisions between buildings and the cost of land, respectively. For this purpose, a dynamic MDOF model by having base isolation system is numerically considered and using various earthquake records, relative displacements are mathematically investigated. Different equations to determine the value of damping ratio are collected and the results of evaluations are listed for comparison among them to present a new equation for determination of impact damping ratio. Presented equation is depends significantly on impact velocity before and after impact based on artificial neural network, which the accuracy of them is investigated and also confirmed. In order to select the optimum equation, hysteresisloop of impact between base of building and rubber bumper is considered and compared with the hysteresis loop of each impact, calculated by different equations. Finally, using representative equation, the effect of thickness, number and stiffness of rubber bumpers are numerically investigated. The results of analysis indicate that stiffness and number of bumpers have significantly affected in zone of impact force while the thickness of bumpers have not shown significant influence to calculate impact force during earthquake. For instance, increasing the number of bumpers, gap size between structures and also the value of stiffness is caused to decrease impact force between models. The final evaluation demonstrates that bumpers are able to decrease peak lateral displacement of top story during impact.

  • There have been various studies to find out the correlation between subjective and objective evaluation ride comfort in vehicle. To be proper, subjective evaluation considers the signal pattern of vibration generated by vehicle. In this study, driving test is carried out to extract the correlation between subjective evaluation by subjects and vibration signals measured on the seat when a test vehicle is passing over test bumpers, which have two sorts of width change and height change respectively. A unique reference bumper is used to be compared with the relative comfort of test bumpers.

  • The analysis of thermoplastic automotive bumpers needs not only characterizations of the thermomechanical properties of thermoplastic materials but also the finite element method which can solve the problems with a large deflection, an elastic-inelastic deformation, and a change of a contact state. This paper describes the modeling techniques in the finite element analysis in order to get a good prediction of thermoplastic bumper behaviors. Simplification effects of a complex geometry of thermoplastic bumpers are studied by comparing the results from static loading tests and the finite element analysis.

  • It is a frequent occurrence in urban traffic - a low-speed collision in which one vehicle hits the back of another. The vehicles often sustain expensive damage. Bumpers can reduce this damage, but only line up so the initial contact in an impact is bumper to bumper. Then the bumpers on the colliding vehicles have to absorb the crash energy, keeping damage away from expensive sheet metal, lights, and other components. In real world accidents, Bumper mismatches in crashes are increasing, and the resulting repair costs from low-speed collisions are escalating. In this study, we investigated the bumper rail height and analyzed their effects on repair cost. Futhermore, Our 16kph front-into-rear crash tests demonstrates bumper mismatch problem.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of shock absorption of recycled bumper applied to the standard of shock absorption for newly-developed bumper. For the experiment, two different passenger cars which have different types of bumper were selected. In this work, two kinds of reused bumpers were tested in accordance with an automotive safety regulation to verify exterior bumpers' impact energy absorption performance. The performance results of reused bumper test show that the shock absorption performance indicated the almost same performance and similar characteristics of 2.5 miles bumper test compared to the absorption performance of new bumper of test vehicles.

Correlation between Methane (CH4) Emissions and Root Aerenchyma of Rice Varieties

  • Percentage of aerenchyma area has been closely linked with amounts of methane emitted by rice. A diversity panel of 39 global rice varieties were examined to determine genetic variation for root transverse section (RTS), aerenchyma area, and % aerenchyma. RTS and aerenchyma area showed a strong positive correlation while there existed no significant correlation between RTS area and % aerenchyma. Five varieties previously shown to differ in methane emissions under field conditions were found to encompass the variation found in the diversity panel for RTS and aerenchyma area. These five varieties were evaluated in a greenhouse study to determine the relationship of RTS, aerenchyma area, and % aerenchyma with methane emissions. Methane emissions at physiological maturity were the highest for 'Rondo', followed by 'Jupiter', while 'Sabine', 'Francis' and 'CLXL745' emitted the least. The same varietal rank, 'Rondo' being the largest and 'CLXL745' the smallest, was observed with RTS and aerenchyma areas. RTS and aerenchyma area were significantly correlated with methane emissions, r = 0.61 and r = 0.57, respectively (P < 0.001); however, there was no relationship with % aerenchyma. Our results demonstrated that varieties with a larger root area also developed a larger aerenchyma area, which serves as a gas conduit, and as a result, methane emissions were increased. This study suggests that root transverse section area could be used as a means of selecting germplasm with reduced $CH_4$ emissions.

An Economic Effect Analysis on Remanufacturing Part of Automobile (자동차부품 재제조에 따른 품목별 경제성 효과 분석 연구)

  • Due to environment problems in end of Life Vehicle in the country, the interest in remanufacturing is heightened than ever. In this study, it is important to quantitatively evaluate the economic effect of the introduction of the automotive remanufacturing business and analyzed cost-benefit for the three species of bumpers, doors, fenders, which is relatively lower remanufactured automotive component. The results showed that cost-beneift of each parts were analyzed 54,000 per one part, and if remanufacturing were 50%, benefits were to occur with a profit of 226,060 won. Thus, remanufacturing of bumpers, doors, fender resulted a significant benefit, and then it is possible that remanufacturing company have enough economic value for remanufacturing.
