  • A bumper comprises a bumper face, a bumper beam for distributing the load from the impacts applied to the bumper face and reinforcing the bumper, an absorber member interposed between the bumper face and the bumper beam, and a pair of bumper stays which secure the bumper beam to the vehicle body. A conventional bumper stay structure is assembled into several stamped parts, so several processes are needed and the structure is complicated. In this study the bumper stay is applied to the tubular hydroforming which is known to have several advantages such as the reduction of the number of the process and the part weight. The thickness distribution of the tube after hydroforming and the internal energy at the event of the a compression are mainly considered to evaluate the hydro-formability and energy absorption performance.

열가소성 폴리올레핀으로 구성된 범퍼 후방 보 개발에 관한 연구 (Investigation of Development of Bumper Back-Beam Using a Thermoplastic Polyolefin)

  • Recently, the application of the plastic material to automotive components and structures has steadily increased to satisfy demands on the saving of overall weight and the improvement of energy efficiency. The objective of this paper is to investigate the development of a bumper back-beam using a thermoplastic olefin (TPO). The bumper back-beam was designed to be manufactured from the injection molding process. In order to obtain a proper design of the bumper back-beam, three-dimensional finite element analyses were performed for various design alternatives. Stress-strain curves for different strain rates were measured by high speed tensile tests of the TPO to consider strain rate effects in the FEA. The influence of the sectional shape and the rib formation on the contact force-intrusion curves, the deflection and the energy absorption rate of the bumper back-beam was examined. From the results of the examination, a proper design of the bumper back-beam was acquired. The bumper back-beam consisting of TPO was fabricated from the injection moulding process and the vibration welding. Pendulum crash tests were carried out using the fabricated bumper back-beam. The results of the tests showed that the designed bumper back-beam can satisfy requirements of the federal motor vehicle safety standard (FMVSS). Through the comparison of the previously designed bumper back-beam with the newly designed bumper back beam, it was noted that the weight of the designed bumper back-beam is lighter than that of the previously designed bumper back beam by nearly 16 %. In addition, it was considered that the newly designed bumper back beam can improve recycling of the bumper back-beam.

충돌성능을 고려한 승용차 범퍼빔 단면의 최적화 (Optimization of Bumper Beam Section of Crashworthiness)

  • Optimum design of bumper beam is investigated using nonlinear CAE structural analysis techniques.In order to minimize its weight, while enhancing structural performances, bumper beam structural analyses were carried out to produce optimum section. Model is composed of bumper beam and stay. First, considering FMVSS safety standard, static strength and energy absorbing capability were estimated for several competitive bumpers through pendulum static analysis, and most promising section was chosen. Next, to ensure dynamic crashworthinesss performance for center pole impact was evaluated for the bumper beam with chosen section through pendulum static analysis, referring to DHS bumper dynamic impact standard. Finally, 2.5 mph bumper beam was designed and its structural performance was estimated. Through this investigation, an optimized bumper beam section with less weight of 20% while maintaining almost equal carshworthiness, compared with a conventional bumper beam section which proved its impact crashworthiness by experiments, was developed.

정면 오프셋 충돌시 가스튜브를 이용한 차량용 범퍼의 손상성, 수리성에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Damageability and Repairability of the Car Bumper Systems with Gas Tube)

  • The car crash accidents in low speed occurs most frequently. Damage on a conventional bumper after the car accident causes the bumper to get fixed most of time. This study shows how a gas tube bumper reduces a damageability and increase repairability after the car accidents. The 15 km/h 40% offset front and rear crash test recommended by RCAR (Research council for automobile repairs) standard was performed and evaluated damages on the gas tube bumper by the pendulum impact tester. In this study, the gas tube bumper reduces damageability and increases repairability after car crash accidents. In addition, car frame design to apply the gas tube bumper may consider to be changed.

  • Buried bumper syndrome is a rare but potentially severe complication of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube insertion. Though this complication is uncommon, it may lead to pressure necrosis, bleeding, perforation, peritonitis, sepsis, or death. Each case of buried bumper syndrome is unique in terms of patient comorbidities and anatomic positioning of the buried bumper. For this reason, many approaches have been described in the management of buried bumper syndrome. In this case report, we describe the case of an adolescent Caucasian female who developed buried bumper syndrome three years after undergoing percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy insertion. We review diagnosis and management of buried bumper syndrome and describe a novel technique for bumper removal in which we use a guide wire in combination with external traction to maintain a patent gastrostomy lumen while removing the internal percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy bumper.

IIHS 충격해석에 근거한 구간 조합 복합재료 범퍼 빔 개발 (Development of the Piecewisely-integrated Composite Bumper Beam Based on the IIHS Crash Analysis)

  • 본 연구에서는 IIHS기준 범퍼 충돌해석을 통하여, 구간 조합 복합 범퍼 빔의 특성 분석하였다. 충돌 시 범퍼 빔의 5개 영역에서 지배적인 하중 유형에 대한 정보를 얻기 위해 Al 범퍼 빔에 대한 IIHS 범퍼 충돌 해석이 진행되었다. 또한, 항공우주 분야에서 빈번히 사용되는 5가지 적층순서 중, 인장 및 압축하중에 가장 효과적인 적층순서가 복합재료 쿠폰 해석을 통해 결정되었다. 이와 더불어, 결정된 두가지 복합재료의 적층순서를 적용한 복합재료 빔에 대해 3점 굽힘 해석이 수행되었다. 마지막으로, IIHS 범퍼 충돌 해석을 진행하여 구간 조합으로 이루어진 복합재료 범퍼 빔을 다른 유형의 복합 범퍼 빔과 비교하였다. 제안된 구간조합 복합재료 범퍼 빔은 단일 적층순서로 이루어진 복합재료 범퍼 빔에 비해 우수한 충돌 특성을 나타내었다.

봅슬레이 범퍼 형상에 대한 공력학적 연구 (AERODYNAMIC STUDY ON BOBSLEIGH BUMPER SHAPE)

  • A parametric study on the shapes of bobsleigh bumpers has been performed to reduce the aerodynamic drag. Effects of geometric parameters, such as leading angle of leading bumper, the ratio of minimum width to maximum width of leading bumper, the ratio of leading bumper length to trailing bumper length, trailing angle of trailing bumper, and the ratio of bumper height to installation location of bumper from the bottom of bobsleigh, on the aerodynamic performance of the bobsleigh were estimated using 3-D Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The turbulence was analyzed using the shear stress turbulence model. Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter of the external flow channel was in the range of 150,000~1,000,000. Numerical results for drag coefficient were validated compared to experimental data. Ranges of the five geometric parameters were determined according to the rule of Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobaganning. The aerodynamic performance of the bobsleigh sled was most sensitive to the leading angle of leading bumper and the ratio of minimum width to maximum width of leading bumper.
