Geometry and load effects on transient response of a VFGM annular plate: An analytical approach

  • In this article, the effect of different geometrical, materials and load parameters on the transient response of axisymmetric viscoelastic functionally graded annular plates with different boundary conditions are studied. The behavior of the plate is assumed the elastic in bulk and viscoelastic in shear with the standard linear solid model. Also, the graded properties vary through the thickness according to a power law function. Three types of mostly applied transient loading, i.e., step, impulse, and harmonic with different load distribution respect to radius coordinate are examined. The motion equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are extracted by applying the first order shear deformation theory which are three coupled partial differential equations with variable coefficients. The resulting motion equations are solved analytically using the perturbation technique and the generalized Fourier series. The sensitivity of the response to the graded indexes, different transverse loads, aspect ratios, boundary conditions and the material properties are investigated too. The results are compared with the finite element analysis.

An Orchestrated Attempt to Determine the Chemical Properties of Asian Dust Particles by PIXE and XRF Techniques

  • An orchestrated attempt was made to analyze samples of bulk and individual particulate matters (PM) collected at the Gosan ground-based station on the west coast of Jeju, Korea. A two-stage filter pack sampler was operated to collect particles in both large (> $1.2\;{\mu}m$) and small size fractions (< $1.2\;{\mu}m$) between the Asian dust (hereafter called "AD") storm event and non-Asian dust period. Elemental components in bulk and individual particles were determined by PIXE and synchrotron XRF analysis systems, respectively. To assess the transport pathways of air parcels and to determine the spatial distribution of PM, the backward trajectories of the Meteorological Data Explorer (Center for Global Environmental Research, 2010) and the NOAA's HYSPLIT dispersion-trajectory models were applied. In line with general expectations, Si and other crustal elements in large size particles showed considerably higher mass loading on AD days in comparison with non-AD days. Computation of the crustal enrichment factors [(Z/Si)$_{particle}$/(Z/Si)$_{desert}$ sand] of elements in large size particles (> $1.2\;{\mu}m$) allowed us to estimate the source profile and chemical aging of AD particles as well as to classify the soil-origin elements. On the basis of a single particle analysis, individual AD particles are classified into three distinct groups (neutralized mineral particles, S-rich mineral particles, and imperfectly neutralized particles).

Ultimate strength performance of Northern sea going non-ice class commercial ships

  • In the early design stage of ships, the two most important structural analyses are performed to identify the structural capacity and safety. The first step is called global strength analysis (longitudinal strength analysis or hull girder strength analysis) and the second step is local buckling analysis (stiffened panel strength analysis). This paper deals with the ultimate strength performance of Arctic Sea Route-going commercial ships considering the effect of low temperature. In this study, two types of structural analyses are performed in Arctic sea conditions. Three types of ship namely oil tanker, bulk carrier and container ship with four different sizes (in total 12 vessels) are tested in four low temperatures (-20, -40, -60 and $-800^{\circ}C$), which are based on the Arctic environment and room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$). The ultimate strength performance is analysed with ALPS/HULL progressive hull collapse analysis code for ship hulls, then ALPS/ULSAP supersize finite element method for stiffened panels. The obtained results are summarised in terms of temperature, vessel type, vessel size, loading type and other effects. The important insights and outcomes are documented.

광양항의 경쟁력 제고를 위한 비표준화 화물의 컨테이너화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Containerization of Non-standardization Cargo for the Competitiveness Improvement of Gwangyang Port)

  • 본 연구는 광양항 컨테이너부두의 경쟁력을 높이고 터미널운영사 간 과도한 경쟁을 해결하기 위한 컨테이너 화물유치 및 신규화물을 창출 할 수 있는 방안으로 비표준화 화물의 컨테이너화 방안과 필요성을 제시하는 데 연구의 목적이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 컨테이너화 비율이 낮거나 최근 들어 컨테이너화가 진행되고 있는 14개 품목을 일반화물, 산적화물, 액체화물로 구분하여 컨테이너화 방안 및 필요성을 제시하였다. 일반화물의 경우 일반 컨테이너의 개조나 적재방법을 개선하여 이용률을 높일 필요가 있으며, 산적화물은 우천에 의한 제품 변질 방지, 소량 주문 및 판매 가능, Clean 화물 취급, 물류비 절감 등 컨테이너화 장점을 최대한 활용할 필요가 있다. 그리고 액체화물은 높은 품질과 안전하고 내구성이 강한 Flexitank나 Flexibag을 활용한 소량 주문 및 판매, 운송의 편리성, 시간과 비용 절감 등이 필요하다.

무·배추 수확 작업을 위한 다목적 주행플랫폼 개발 (Development of a multi-purpose driving platform for Radish and Chinese cabbage harvester)

  • Radish and Chinese cabbage are the most produced and consumed vegetables in Korea. The mechanization of harvesting operations is necessary to minimize the need for manual labor. This study to develop and evaluate the performance of a multi-purpose driving platform that can apply modular Radish and Chinese cabbage harvesting devices. The multi-purpose driving platform consisted of driving, device control, engine, hydraulic, harvesting, conveying, and loading part. Radish and Chinese cabbage harvesting conducted using the multi-purpose driving platform each harvesting module. The performance of the multi-purpose driving platform was evaluated the field efficiency and loss rate. The total Radish harvesting operation time 34.3 min., including 28.8 min., of harvesting time, 1.9 min., of turning time, and 3.6 min., of replacement time of bulk bag. During Radish harvesting, the field efficiency and average loss rate of the multi-purpose driving platform were 2.0 hr/10a and 3.1 %. Chinese cabbage harvesting operation 49.3 min., including 26.6 min., of harvesting time, 4.6 min., of turning time, and 18.1 min., of replacement time of bulk bag. During Chinese cabbage harvesting, the field efficiency and average loss rate of the multi-purpose driving platform 2.1 hr/10a and 0.1 %. Performance evaluation of the multi-purpose driving platform that harvesting work was possible by installing Radish and Chinese cabbage harvest modules. Performance analysis through harvest performance evaluation in various Radish and Chinese cabbage cultivation environments is necessary.

회전원판접촉법(回轉圓板接觸法)에 의한 폐수처리(廢水處理)의 모형(模型)에 관한 연구(研究) (Models of Wastewater Treatment by Rotating Discs)

  • 회전원판접촉법(回轉圓板接觸法)에 의한 폐수처리(廢水處理)의 이해(理解)를 증진(增進)시키고 여러가지 조건(條件)의 변화(變化)에 따라 달라지는 처리효율(處理效率)을 산정(算定)하기 위하여 모형(模型)을 개발(開發)하고 Simulation을 통하여 정상상태(定常狀態)와 비정상상태(非定常狀態)에서의 모형(模型)을 분석(分析)하였다. 회전원판(回轉圓板)에 의한 기질제거모형(基質除去模型)은 용액(溶液)으로부터 미생물막내부(微生物膜內部)로의 기질전달(基質傳達)과 미생물(微生物)에 의한 기질(基質)의 분해(分解)에 의해 처리(處理)가 이루어진다고 가정(假定)하고 정립(定立)되었고 모형(模型)은 여러개의 요소(要素)로 나뉘어진 액체막(液體膜)과 미생물막(微生物膜), 그리고 용액중(溶液中)의 기질농도(基質濃度)에 관한 일련의 물질수지식(物質收支式)으로 구성(構成)된다. 정상상태(定常狀態)에서 처리효율(處理效率)은 기질(基質)의 확산계수(擴散係數)와 미생물(微生物)의 최대기질분해율(最大基質分解率)에 의해 좌우(左右)되고 확산(擴散)에 의한 영향은 용액중(溶液中)의 기질농도(基質濃度)가 낮고 최대기질분해율(最大基質分解率)이 높을 경우 현저하게 나타난다. 기질제거효율(基質除去效率)은 미생물막(微生物膜)의 두께가 얇을 때는 거의 두께에 비례(比例)하여 증가(增加)하나 두께의 증가(增加)에 따라 효율증가(效率增加)는 둔화(鈍化)되고 한계(限界)두께에 이르면 기질(基質)의 침투(浸透)가 불충분(不充分)하여 효율(效率)은 일정(一定)해진다. 비정상상태(非定常狀態)에서 유출수(流出水)의 수질(水質)은 반응조(反應槽)의 체적(體積)에 의해 영향을 받는다. 반응조(反應槽)의 체적증가(體積增加)는 첨두부하(尖頭負荷)에 대하여 첨두농도(尖頭濃度)를 낮게하는 완충효과(緩衝效果)를 나타내기 때문에 반응조(反應槽)는 균등조(均等槽)의 역할을 한다 할 수 있다.

영주지역 소나무림의 수관연료특성 및 수관연료량 추정 (Crown Fuel Characteristics and Allometric Equations of Pinus densiflora Stands in Youngju Region)

  • 본 연구는 영주지역 소나무림을 대상으로 수관층 연료특성을 분석하고, 각 부위별 연료량 추정을 위한 상대생장식을 개발하고자 하였다. 연구대상지는 영주시 장수면 일대 소나무림을 대상으로 표준지를 선정하였으며, 매목 조사를 실시한 후, 10본의 표본목을 벌채하였다. 벌채한 소나무는 수간, 잎, 가지 순으로 분류하였고, 가지는 다시 굵기 별로 분류하여 무게를 측정한 후 분석하였다. 본 연구 결과에 의하면, 생엽의 수분함량은 119%, 수관층 수분함량은 105.3%로 나타났다. 전체 연료량에 대한 수관층 연료량 비율은 30%로 나타났으며, 수관화 확산시 이용 가능한 연료량(잎-1 cm 가지) 비율은 50.3%로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 제시된 수관층 연료 추정식에 대한 조정결정계수($R^{2}_{adj}$)의 범위는 0.6846-0.9246으로 나타났으며, 수관층 체적 추정식에 대한 조정결정계수($R^{2}_{adj}$)는 0.8308로 나타났다.

CFD 시뮬레이션을 이용한 냉장컨테이너의 열유동 설계 (Design of Heat and Fluid Flow in Cold Container Using CFD Simulation)

  • Because thermal non-uniformity of transported agricultural products is mainly affected by cooling air flow pattern in the cold transport equipment, the analysis and control of flowfield is key to optimization of cold transport equipment. The objectives of this study were to estimate the effects of geometric and operating parameters of cold container on the air flow and heat transfer, and find the optimum design parameters for the low temperature level and its uniformity in given cold container with CFD simulations. Existences of ducts, gaps between pallets and geometries of exit as geometric parameters and fan blowing velocity as operating parameter were investigated. CFD simulations were carried out with the FLUENT 6.2 code. The result showed that optimum design condition was bulk loading with no duct, wall exit and 8.0 m/s of fan blowing velocity.

  • Fillers have been used for printing paper to improve printability, sheet formation and optical properties and to reduce production costs by replacing expensive wood pulps. However, an increased filler content will decrease paper strength because filler particles interfere with fiber-fiber bonding. In order to increase filler content without sacrificing too much paper strength in high filler content papers, the surface of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) has been modified by adsorbing anionic polyacrylamide and cationic starch in series. The adsorbed polymer layers would enhance interactions between the filler surface and the fiber surface, improving internal bonding. It was found that the modified PCC increased paper strength at a given filler content compared to the coventional method. Negligible differences in optical properties and formation of paper, filler and fines retention and drainage on the wire section were observed between the modified and the conventional PCC. However, the decreased bulk of paper was observed when the modified PCC was used.

Effect of fines on the compression behaviour of poorly graded silica sand

  • A series of high-pressure isotropic compression tests were performed on four types of poorly graded silica sand that were artificially prepared based on representative grading curves and similar mineralogy composition of seabed sediment containing different fines contents existing in the Nankai Trough. The addition of fines steepens the initial compression path and increases the decrement of the void ratio after loading. The transitional behaviour of the poorly graded sand with a larger amount of fines content was identified. The slope of the normal compression line shows a slight decreasing tendency with the level of fines content. The bulk modulus of silica sand with fines was lower when compared with the published results of silica sand without fines. A small amount of particle crushing of the four types of poorly graded sand with variable fines content levels was noticed, and the results indicated that the degree of particle crushing tended to decrease as the fines content increased.
