Fabrication of a large grain YBCO bulk superconductor by homo-seeding melt growth method

  • To fabricate large grain YBCO bulk superconductors by melt process, Sm123 single crystal with a high melting point are mostly used as seeds. However, it also uses Y123 film deposited on MgO single crystal substrate. This study investigated the growth behavior of the Y123 grain during a melt process when single grain YBCO bulk was used as a seed. Single grain Y123 bulk was grown when the seed size was small. When the seed size was relatively large, multiple grains were grown but the grains were still large. Y123 seed crystal was completely decomposed during high temperature anneal at 1040℃ and new Y123 crystals were nucleated during a slow cooling stage below a peritectic temperature. Thereafter, newly formed Y123 crystals from the seed area are thought to grow into the Y1.8 powder compact. The crystallographic orientations of newly nucleated Y123 grains are independent of the crystallographic orientation of Y123 seed. It is thought that the crystallographic orientation of newly nucleated Y123 crystal can be controlled by using Y211-free Y123 single crystal as a seed of homo-seeding melt growth.

  • Effects of sintering temperature and time on relative permittivity $\varepsilon$$\_$r/, unloaded quality factor Q$.$f and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency $\tau$$\_$f/ of dielectric resonator materials produced from commercial ZST powder were investigated in some detail. Q$.$f values, as determined from cavity perturbation method at 1.6 GHz, gradually increased with sintering temperature reaching the maximum at 1420$^{\circ}C$. However, bulk density and relative permittivity values, which increased with temperature, started to decrease above 1380$^{\circ}C$. In addition, Q$.$f values slightly increased with sintering time at the sintering temperature of 1300$^{\circ}C$∼1380$^{\circ}C$, while bulk density and relative permittivity values were approximately constant. It was also found that $\tau$$\_$f/ values were not affected by sintering temperature and time within the experimental conditions used.

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the bearing of induction motors. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of an induction motor with superconducting bearings using HTS bulks. The bearing had eight hexahedron type YBCO bulks. Height, width and thickness of the HTS bulk were 30mm, 30mm and 10mm, respectively. Single phase induction motor was used to drive the shaft made of aluminum and the rotor of a conventional induction motor. To estimate the performance of the HTS bulk magnetic bearing, no load test, load test and Impact test were carried out. Load tests were performed by using air resistance caused by the shaft-mounted thin cylinder with buckets. Impact tests by axial direction and vertical direction impact showed that the vibration of the shaft gradually decayed. The induction motor with HTS bulk magnetic bearing rotated silently and smoothly throughout the tests. According to the test results, conventional bearings can be replaced with superconducting magnetic bearings made of HTS bulks.

  • Graphite can be classified into natural graphite from mines and artificial graphite. Due to its outstanding properties such as light weight, thermal resistance, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, chemical stability, and high-temperature strength, artificial graphite is used across various industries in powder form and bulk form. Artificial graphite of powder form is usually used as anode materials for secondary cells, while artificial graphite of bulk form is used in steelmaking electrode bars, nuclear reactor moderators, silicon ingots for semiconductors, and manufacturing equipment. This study defines artificial graphite as bulk graphite, and provides an overview of bulk graphite manufacturing, including isotropic and anisotropic materials, molding methods, and heat treatment.

고온초전도벌크형 전동기의 특성시험 (Performance Evaluation of the HTS Bulk type Motor)

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the rotor of an ac motor. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of a ac motor with HTS bulk rotor. The rotor of a conventional squirrel cage induction motor was replaced with cylinder type YBCO bulk. Height and outer diameter of the HTS bulk was 15mm and 46mm, respectively. Eddy current brake using aluminium disk was used to measure the torque of the HTS motor. No load test, locked rotor test and load test were performed to examine the characteristics of the HTS motor. Test results show the motor can rotate at synchronous speed without any special starting circuit. Maximum output power of the constructed HTS motor was 408W.

  • Microforming can be a good application for bulk metallic glasses. It is important to simulate the deformation behaviour of the bulk metallic glasses in a supercooled liquid region for manufacturing micromachine parts. For these purposes, a correct constitutive model which can reproduce viscosity results is essential for good predicting capability. In this paper, we studied deformation behaviour of the bulk metallic glasses using the finite element method in conjunction with the fictive stress constitutive model which can describe non-Newtonian as well as Newtonian behaviour. A combination of kinetic equation which describes the mechanical response of the bulk metallic glasses at a given temperature and evolution equations fur internal variables provide the constitutive equation of the fictive stress model. The internal variables are associated with fictive stress and relation time. The model has a modular structure and can be adjusted to describe a particular type of microforming process. Implementation of the model into the MARC software has shown its versatility and good predictive capability.

A study on design process of HTS bulk magnet synchronous motors

  • This study explores the use of a bulk type high-temperature superconductors (HTS) as trapped field magnets in synchronous motors. A HTS bulk is examined for its ability to generate powerful magnetic fields over a permanent magnet and to eliminate the need for a direct power supply connection compared to a tape form of HTS. A 150 kW interior-mounted bulk-type superconducting synchronous motor is designed and analyzed. The A-H formulation is used to numerical analysis. The results show superior electrical performance and weight reduction when comparing the designed model with the conventional permanent magnet synchronous motor of the same topology. This study presents HTS bulk synchronous motor's overall design process and highlights its potential in achieving relatively high power density than conventional permanent magnet synchronous motor.

적외선 라디오미터 관측 자료를 활용한 해양 피층 수온 산출 (Retrieval of Oceanic Skin Sea Surface Temperature using Infrared Sea Surface Temperature Autonomous Radiometer (ISAR) Radiance Measurements)

  • 기후변화와 지구환경변화에 중요한 역할을 하고 있는 해수면온도는 인공위성 적외선 센서가 관측하는 피층 수온과 측기들이 관측하는 표층 수온으로 나누어질 수 있다. 국외 여러 기관에서 보급되고 있는 해수면온도 관측 자료들은 각각 서로 다른 깊이의 수온을 나타내고 있어서 해양 피층과 표층 수온 사이의 관계를 이해하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 적외선 라디오미터를 해양조사선에 장착하기 위한 시스템을 설계하고 부착하고 운용하여 국내에서 처음으로 해양 피층 수온을 산출할 수 있는 관측 환경을 구축하였다. 선박 관측 전에 실험실에서 라디오미터 기기의 검보정을 실시하여 보정 계수를 산출하였다. 관측된 해수면에서 방출된 복사에너지와 하늘 복사에너지를 피층 수온으로 산출하는 일련의 과정을 적용하였다. 산출된 피층 해수면온도를 현장 관측 표층 수온자료와 비교하여 표층과 피층 수온 차이를 정량적으로 조사하고자 하였으며, Himawari-8 정지궤도 위성 해수면온도 자료와의 비교를 통해 해양 상층 연직구조의 특성을 이해하고자 하였다. 2020년 4월 21일부터 5월 6일까지 남해안의 장목항과 동해 남부를 관측한 해양 피층 수온은 전체적으로 표층 수온과 0.76℃ 정도의 차이를 보였다. 또한 이 두 수온 차이의 평균제곱근오차는 약 0.6℃에서 0.9℃까지의 일간변화를 가지고 있었으며, 하루 중 1-3시에 0.83-0.89℃로 가장 크게 나타났으며, 15시에 0.59℃로 최소의 차이를 가지고 있었다. 또한 편차도 0.47-0.75℃의 일간변화를 나타내었다. 해양 피층 관측 수온과 위성 해수면 온도 간 차이는 약 0.74℃의 평균제곱근오차, 0.37℃의 편차를 나타냈다. 본 연구의 분석을 통해 관측 수심에 따른 피층-표층 수온의 차이를 확인할 수 있었으며, 피층-표층 수온 차의 계절적 변화를 정량적으로 이해하고 또 변동 요인과의 관련성을 연구하기 위하여 연구조사선을 이용한 추가적인 연안 및 대양 관측이 지속적으로 진행되어야 함을 시사한다.

  • 韓國煙草硏究所, 大邱試驗場(北緯35$^{\circ}$49')에서 1979年 透明한 fiber glass로 지은 円柱型 greenhouse(4.50$\times$3.83$\times$2.80m)內에 乾燥室의 外壁 및 天井을 Polyurethan에 함석을 입혀 黑色 paint로 coating한 板을 heat absorber겸 斷熱板으로, 乾燥室 양편에 各各 4.5㎥의 자갈을 넣은 gravel heat storage system 그리고 greenhouse內의 加熱된 空氣를 練燒室로 誘導할 수 있는 air duct를 설치한 8.25㎥의 太陽熱 直接利用 方式의 Bulk 乾燥材와 同一한 크기의 Bulk 乾燥材를 比較 試驗하였다. 乾燥期間中 外溫 30.5~35.5$^{\circ}C$, 總日射量 1004.2~1436.2 cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$의 條件下에서 3回 乾燥 試驗한 結果, 天井 heat absorber의 最高溫度는 89$^{\circ}C$이였으며, 練燒室로 吸入되는 空氣의 最高溫度는 64$^{\circ}C$이며 평균 46$^{\circ}C$로서 外溫에 비하여 18$^{\circ}C$가 높았고, 慣行Bulk乾燥材에 비하여 25%의 燃料가 節減되였다.

The Interaction of Hydrogen Atom with ZnO: A Comparative Study of Two Polar Surfaces

  • The interaction of hydrogen with ZnO single crystal surfaces, ZnO(0001) and ZnO(000-1), has been investigated using a temperature programmed desorption (TPD) technique. Both surfaces do not interact with molecular hydrogen. When the ZnO(0001) is exposed to atomic hydrogen at 370 K, hydrogen is adsorbed in the surface and desorption takes place at around 460 K and 700 K. In ZnO(000-1), the desorption peaks are observed at around 440 K and 540 K. In both surfaces, as the atomic hydrogen exposure is further increased, the intensity of the low-temperature peak reaches maximum but the intensity of the high-temperature peak keeps increasing. In ZnO(000-1), the existence of hydrogen bonding to the surface O atoms and the bulk hydrogen has been confirmed by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). When the Zn(0001) surface is exposed to atomic hydrogen at around 200 K, a new $H_2$ desorption peak has been observed at around 250 K. The intensity of the desorption feature at 250 K is much greater than that of the desorption feature at 460 K. This low-temperature desorption feature indicates hydrogen is bonded to surface Zn atoms. We will report the effect of the ZnO structure on the adsorption and bulk diffusion of hydrogen.
