  • The mechanical properties of a bulk amorphous alloy ($Zr_{41.2}$ $Ti_{13.8}$ /$Cu_{10}$ $Ni_{10}$ $Be_{22.5}$ /at.%) before and after an annealing treatment were investigated. For the bulk amorphous alloy, the compressive strength was about 2.0 GPa, irrespective of the strain rates in the range of $10^{-4}$ to $10^3$$ sec^{-1}$ . Fine-sized nanocrystalline particles (10~100 nm) were precipitated homogeneously in the bulk amorphous matrix after the annealing treatments. Compared to the bulk amorphous materials, these composite materials, composed of the nanocrystalline phases and a bulk amorphous matrix had much different mechanical properties. The strength and strain of coposite materials measured by a compressive test showed a peak-maximum values at 7 vol.% of the nanocrystalline phases. The values in higher volume fraction of the crystalline phases in the amorphous matrix were decreased, as measured by both quasi-static and high strain rate. The decrease in fracture strength is due to presence of the dispersed large-crystalline phases in the amorphous matrix.

  • Ni-base amorphous alloys were manufactured using melt-spinning and Cu-mold die casting methods. Amorphous formability, the supercooled liquid region before crystallization and mechanical properties were examined. The reduced glass transition temperature and the supercooled liquid region of $Ni_{51} Nb_{20} Zr_9 Ti_9 Co_8 Cu_3$alloy were 0.621 and 46 K respectively. $Ni_{51} Nb_{20} Zr_9 Ti_9 Co_8 Cu_3$ alloy was produced in the rod shape 3mm diameter using the Cu-mold die casting. Hardness, compression strength, elongation and elastic modulus of the alloy were 850 DPN, 2.75 GPa, 1.8% and 150 GPa respectively. Moreover, compression strength of 2.75 GPa was the highest value in the amorphous bulk alloy produced up to now.

  • The new Cu-Zr-Ti-Ni-Pd amorphous alloy system has been introduced and manufactured using melt-spinning and Cu-mold die casting methods. Amorphous formability, the supercooled liquid region before crystallization and mechanical properties of the alloys were examined. The reduced glass transition temperature(Trg = Tg/Tm) and the supercooled liquid region(${\Delta}$Tx = Tx-Tg) of $Cu_{49}Zr_{30}Ti_{10}Ni_5Pb_6$ alloy were 0.620 and 57 K respectively. $Cu_{49}Zr_{30}Ti_{10}Ni_5Pb_6$ amorphous alloy was produced in the rod shape with 2mm diameter using the Cu-mold die casting. The hardness value of the amorphous bulk alloy was 432 DPN.

  • Liquid formability of bulk amorphous alloys is known to be very poor due to their high viscosity comparing with conventional metallic materials. It is important to have the fabricating technology of bulk amorphous alloys in order to make the components with complicated shape. Liquid formability includes the mold cavity filling ability and the hot tear(crack) resistance during solidification. A mold made of a commercial tool steel for the formability test was designed. Melting was performed by the arc melting furnace with melting capacity of 200 g in an argon atmosphere. Liquid formability and glass forming ability of Cu base and Ni base bulk amorphous alloys were measured and evaluated. Mold filling ability of Ni-Zr-Ti-Si-Sn alloy was better than that of Cu-Ni-Zr-Ti alloy, however the reverse is the hot tear resistance. Bulk amorphous alloy is very susceptible to crack if partial crystallization occurs during solidification. Crack resistance was thought to be closely related with the glass forming ability.

  • The deformation behavior of a bulk amorphous and crystallized amorphous $Zr_{22.5}Ti_{14}Cu_{12.5}Ni_{10}Be_{22.5}$ alloy extracted from a commercial golf club head was characterized at room temperature ana $300^{\circ}C$. At room temperature, amorphous specimens revealed higher yield stress and ductility than partially crystallized alloy specimens. Amorphous alloy displayed some plasticity before fracture, which resulted from strain hardening and repeated crack initiation and propagation. The fracture is mainly localized on one major shear band, and the compressive fracture angle of the amorphous specimen between the stress axis and the fracture plane was about $40^{\circ}$ Scanning electron microscope observations revealed mainly a vein-like structure in the amorphous alloy But the fracture surface of partially crystallized amorphous alloy consisted of vein-like and featureless fracture structure. The partially crystallized alloy extracted from the thick part of the club fractured in the elastic region, at a much lower stress level than the amorphous, suggesting that relatively coarse crystal particles formed during cooling cause the brittle fracture.

  • A new Cu-Hf-Al-Be monolithic bulk amorphous alloy was developed utilizing minimal use of toxic and expensive Be. The developed alloy exhibits a large glass forming ability (GFA) (${\Phi}8$ mm). The possible mechanisms underlying the enhancement of the glass forming ability by this alloy are discussed based on the dimensionless parameter ${\gamma}$. In addition, alloy design strategy for the improvement of GFA is proposed in the viewpoint of heat of mixing (${\Delta}H_{mix}$)difference and atomic packing state.

  • When the returned scrap of bulk amorphous alloy is remelted, impurities such as oxides and intermetallic compounds increase. Glass forming ability of its scrap is deteriorated remarkably. Melt fluxing technique is introduced to enhance the glass forming ability during melting and freezing of bulk amorphous alloys. Cu and Zr based alloys are chosen. Small pieces of these alloy scraps and $B_2O_3$ flux are put together in a quartz tube. Cyclic heating and cooling are done by induction heating and water quenching or air cooling. Melting fluxing was effective for both Cu-based and Zr-based alloy, and their glass forming abilities were improved with increasing the number of fluxing.

  • Copper-based bulk amorphous alloy composite was synthesized by using the copper-coated $Cu_{54}Ni_{6}Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ amorphous powder which was obtained by argon gas atomization. The amorphous powder having a super-cooled liquid region of 53 K was coated by crystalline copper by electroless coating. The consolidation was carried out by manufacturing performs and by the subsequent warm extrusion at 743 K. During the compression test at the room temperature, the composite containing a large fraction of crystalline copper displayed a larger plastic strain after yielding. FEM simulation revealed change in fracture modes in the composites depending on the amount of crystalline copper in the composites.

  • We investigated the cryogenic temperature plasticity of a bulk amorphous alloy. Experiments showed that as temperature decreases, the plasticity of the alloy increases, such that the alloy exhibited ~20% of plastic strain when tested at $-196^{\circ}C$. This enhancement in the plasticity at cryogenic temperatures was associated with the formation of abundant shear bands distributed uniformly over the entire surface of the sample. Nonetheless, the serrations, the characteristic feature of the plastic deformation of amorphous alloys, were unclear at $-196^{\circ}C$. In this study, both the enhanced plasticity and the unclear serrations exhibited by the amorphous alloy at cryogenic temperatures were clarified by exploring shear banding behaviors in the context of the velocity and the viscosity of a propagating shear band.

  • Microstructure and soft magnetic properties of bulk amorphous and/or nanocrystalline $Fe_{73.5}Cu_1Nb_3Si_{13.5}B_9$ alloys prepared by consolidation at 5.5GPa were investigated. The relative density of the bulk sample 1 (from amorphous powders) was 98.5% and the grain sizes were about 10.6nm. While the relative density and grain sizes of bulk sample 2 (from nanocrystalline powders) are 98% and 20.1nm, respectively. Particularly, the bulk samples exhibited a good combined magnetic property: for Sample1, $M_s=125emu/g$ and $H_c=1.5Oe;$ for Sample2, $M_s=129emu/g$ and $H_c=3.3Oe$. The success of synthesizing the nanocrystalline Fe-based bulk alloys will be encouraging for the future development of bulk nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloys.
