Elementary School Students' Conceptual Change through Multiple cognitive conflicts Strategy-Regarding Preconceptions about the Brightness of an Electric Bulb (다중인지갈등 상황에서 전구의 밝기에 대한 초등학생들의 사전개념 변화)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a multiple cognitive conflict strategy at remedying student's misconceptions. Elementary students have many misconceptions about the brightness of the electric bulb in simple dual circuits. Most of the misconceptions can be summed up as 'the more batteries or the fewer bulbs, the brighter is the output.' The students have learned about the brightness of the electric bulb while connected to a battery in Grade 4 and the brightness of multiple electric bulbs in Grade 5. However, about $50%$ of the students remain with the firm misconception that the brightness of the bulb is related to the number of source batteries. This strong misconception may not lead to a conceptual change in the case of only one cognitive conflict. This study used a multiple conflict strategy while tackling the cognitive conflicts in the students as they solved the problems many times. It involved 160 grade 5 students. The result was they often changed their misconceptions and used more scientific thinking than the same grade students of other schools. It remains to be seen if this success will transfer to other schools and students and we intend on studying further the differences in students regarding this learning process.

Discovery of Larval Gnathostoma nipponicum in Frogs and Snakes from Jeju-do (Province), Republic of Korea

  • A survey was performed to find out the intermediate hosts of Gnathostoma nipponicum in Jeju-do (Province), the Republic of Korea. In August 2009 and 2010, a total of 82 tadpoles, 23 black-spotted pond frogs (Rana nigromaculata), 7 tiger keelback snakes (Rhabdophis tigrinus tigrinus), 6 red-tongue viper snakes (Agkistrodon ussuriensis), and 2 cat snakes (Elaphe dione) were collected in Jeju-do and examined by the pepsin-HCl digestion method. Total 5 gnathostome larvae were detected in 3 (50%) of 6 A. ussuriensis, 70 larvae in 3 of 7 (42.9%) R. tigrinus tigrinus, and 2 larvae in 2 of 82 (8.7%) frogs. No gnathostome larvae were detected in tadpoles and cat snakes. The larvae detected were a single species, and $2.17{\times}0.22mm$ in average size. They had characteristic head bulbs, muscular esophagus, and 4 cervical sacs. Three rows of hooklets were arranged in the head bulbs, and the number of hooklets in each row was 29, 33, and 36 posteriorly. All these characters were consistent with the advanced third-stage larvae of G. nipponicum. It has been first confirmed in Jeju-do that R. nigromaculata, A. ussuriensis, and R. tigrinus tigrinus play a role for intermediate and/or paratenic hosts for G. nipponicum.

Visibility Evaluation for Agricultural Tractor Operators According to ISO 5006 and 5721-1 Standards

  • Purpose: A system to measure the visibility of agricultural tractor operators was designed and evaluated according to ISO standards, and a blind area diagram around the tested tractor was created based on the manual method recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Methods: A visibility measurement system was designed and evaluated based on the ISO 5006 and ISO 5721-1 standards. Two bulbs used to simulate the operator's eyes were mounted on a bar with a supporting frame. A wooden frame was used to determine the seat index point position. The 12-m visibility test circle was divided into six sectors of vision, and the test tractor was placed at the center of the circle. Artificial light was supplied in the darkened environment, and shadow or masking effects were measured manually around the 12-m circle. Results: When the bulbs were placed at the operator's eye level, front visibility was good; no masking was found in the "A" vision sector, but larger masking widths were found in the "B" and "C" vision sectors. Since the masking width exceeded 700 mm, additional tests, such as movement of the light sources to both sides of the operator's eye level, were performed. Less than six masking effects were found in the semi-circle of vision to the front, and more than one masking was found in the "B" and "C" visual fields. The minimum distance between the centers of two masking effects exceeded 2500 mm when measured as a chord on the semi-circle of vision. A blind area diagram was created to define the exact nature of the blind spots and mirror visibility. Conclusions: Visibility evaluation is an effective way to enable proper and safe operation for agricultural tractor operators. Inclusion of this visibility evaluation test in the general testing process might aid tractor manufacturers.

Marker-assisted Genotype Analysis of Bulb Colors in Segregating Populations of Onions (Allium cepa)

  • Bulb color in onions (Allium cepa) is an important trait whose complex inheritance mechanism involves epistatic interactions among major color-related loci. Recent studies revealed that inactivation of dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR) in the anthocyanin synthesis pathway was responsible for the color differences between yellow and red onions, and two recessive alleles of the anthocyanidin synthase (ANS) gene were responsible for a pink bulb color. Based on mutations in the recessive alleles of these two genes, PCR-based markers for allelic selection were developed. In this study, genotype analysis of onions from segregating populations was carried out using these PCR-based markers. Segregating populations were derived from the cross between yellow and red onions. Five yellow and thirteen pink bulbs from one segregating breeding line were genotyped for the two genes. Four pink bulbs were heterozygous for the DFR gene, which explains the continuous segregation of yellow and pink colors in this line. Most pink onions were homozygous recessive for the ANS gene, except for two heterozygotes. This finding indicated that the homozygous recessive ANS gene was primarily responsible for the pink color in this line. The two pink onions, heterozygous for the ANS gene, were also heterozygous for the DFR gene, which indicated that the pink color was produced by incomplete dominance of a red color gene over that of yellow. One pink line and six other segregating breeding lines were also analyzed. The genotyping results matched perfectly with phenotypic color segregation.

Response of Striped Puffer , Fugu xanthopterus to the Colored Lights (색광에 대한 까치복의 반응)

  • The author carried out an experiment to find out the response of Striped puffer. Fugu xanthoperus (Temminck et Schlegel) to the color lights. The experimental tank (300L$\times$50W$\times$50Hcm) was set up in a dark room. Six longitudinal sections with 60cm intervals are marked in the tank to observe the location of the fish. Water depth in the tank was kept 50cm level. Light bulbs of 20W at the both ends of the tank projected the light horizontally into the tank. Two different colored filters were selected from four colors of red, blue, yellow, and white, and the were placed in front of the light bulbs to make different colors of light. Light intensity was controlled by use of auxiliary filiters intercepted between the bulb and the filter. The fishes were acclimatized in the dark for 60 minutes before they were employed in the experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times in 30 second intervals, and the mean of the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times in 30 second intervals, and the mean of the number of fish in each section was given as the gathering rate of the fish. The colors favourited by the fish was found in order of blue, yellow, white and red in the daytime, and blue, white, yellow and red at night. The difference of the average distribution on two different colors of light was 13.12%(4.10-26.55%), and the difference in the daytime(14.79%) was larger than at night (11.45%). Constantly the gathering rate of fish on illumination period was fluctuated with instability. As the gathering rate of fish on illumination period was fluctuated with instability. As the gathering rate on one color of light increased, the gathering rate on the other color of light decreased. The difference of the gathering rate on two different colors of light was comparatively distinct and the difference in the daytime was larger than at night.

Effects of Blackout Certain to Improve Quality of Onion(Allium cepa. L) under Room Temperature (양파 간이 저장시 차광조건이 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to reduce degradation of marketability by the rot and discolor of onion bulbs under room temperature from 1977 to 1998. Allium cepa cv. Changnyungdeago, late strain, was used for the test at the storage condition of non-shading, 55% and 95% shadings. The results obtained are as follows: The mean temperature was maintained lowly 1.0∼2.9$\^{C}$ in 55% and 2.0∼3.8$\^{C}$ in 95% shadings in contrast to nun-shading, but the relative humidity was a tittle higher in high shading than other shading condition. The illumination and color density maintained lowly in high shading. After 21 days of storage, the rate of discolored onion bulbs was significantly higher in non-shading(90.0%) than 55%(35.7%) and 95%(13.3%) shadings. The rotting rate by the end of August was a little decreased at 55%(25.4%) and 95% shadings(26.5%) in contrast to non-shading(28.9%), and total weight loss was maintained lowly in high shading.

On the Development of Flesh Greening of the Stored Garlic (저장 마늘의 녹변현상에 관한 연구)

  • Differences in the major components between non-greening and greening garlic bulbs were compared, and the several factors to be affected on the greening were investigated to study on the greening phenomenon occured in garlic puree made from stored garlic bulbs. From the several chemical analyses it was found that the contents of total nitrogen and lipid were lower in the greening than in the non-greening bulb but the contents of pyruvic and succinic acid were not. The content ratio of glutamic acid to total amino acid and the composition ratios of linoleic and linolenic acid were high in the greening bulb in comparsion with the non-greening. The protein pattern of the greening bulb by SDS-PAGE was significantly differed from that of the non-greening, especially in molecular weight ranges of 45.0-66.2 Kd. From the studies on the effects of pH, temperature and duration on the development of green color in the garlic powder solution, the optimum pH for the greening was 5.5 and maximum degree of the greening in the pH adjusted solution was shown after 30 min at $50^{\circ}C$.

Pyruvic Acid Content according to Different Portions in Onion(Allium cepa L.) (양파의 부위에 따른 pyruvic acid 함량)

  • By analysis of pyruvic acid and sugar levels in bulbs, leaf sheaths, and leaves, and with regard to phyllotaxis, it was shown that the lower portion of each plant component had the greatest pyruvic acid content, the upper portion less, and the middle portion the lowest. When bulb scales were examined, pyruvic acid content was lowest in the second bulb scale from the papery scale. Pyruvic acid level increased toward the inner portion of the bulb. Pyruvic acid levels in leaf sheaths and leaves were greater than those in the bulb during the early stages of bulb growth. However, at harvest, the pyruvic acid content of bulbs increased slightly, whereas those of leaf sheaths and leaves decreased markedly. Tissue sugar contents were similar at the beginning of bulb growth. However, bulb sugar content increased greatly as the bulb grew, and sugar contents of leaf sheaths and leaves decreased. With respect to phyllotaxis, outer older leaves had the lowest total sugar and pyruvic acid contents. Young leaves showed a tendency to have less pyruvic acid and sugar compared with mature leaves.

Chemical Changes in Garlic Bulbs Resulting from Ionizing Energy Treatment at Sprout-Inhibition Dose (발아억제 선량의 전리에너지가 마늘의 성분변화에 미치는 영향)

  • An assessment of the nutritional aspects on irradiated garlic bulbs, stored for 10 months at low$(3{\pm}1^{\circ}C,\;75{\sim}85%\;R.H.)$ and room$(12{\pm}5^{\circ}C,\;75{\sim}85%\;R.H.)$, was performed by means of investigations on the changes in some chemical composition. Ionizing energy treatment at 0.1kGy gamma-ray brought about no significant changes in the moisture content of stored garlic, but it contributed to the reduction of the changes in total available carbohydrate content of stored garlic. After 8 months of storage, the content of free sugars was significantly higher in nonirradiated garlic than in irradiated garlic, especially in low temperature storage. The 0.1kGy irradiation at the sprout-inhibition dose had no apparent effect on the content of ascorbic acid in stored garlic, and sulfurcontaining amino acids appeared to be little affected by the irradiation at 0.1kGy, even though there were some sensitive amino acids like glutamic and aspartic acids.
