  • This study was conducted to evaluate basic seed characteristics such as morphological characteristics and various seed vigor using 4 sorghum varieties, Nampungchal, Donganme, Hwanggeumchal and Whinchal. No difference was shown in morphological characteristics of the varieties except that the width. Whinchal has bulb-shaped seed, while the other varieties have oval-shaped seeds. The seed coat color of Whinchal is obviously different from those of the other varieties; especially, Nampungchal and Hwanggeumchal are not glossy. Germination rate were Hwanggeumchal > Nampungchal > Donganme > Whinchal in the order of higher rate in standard germination tests and cold germination test. In the ageing test, Donganme showed the lowest 15% decrease in comparison with the standard cultivar. Electric conductivity (EC) has negative correlation with standard germination tests, cold germination test and accelerated ageing test. In the percentage of emergence (PE), Hwanggeumchal was the highest 85.7% which was more than 40% to the lowest Whinchal. Mean emergence time (MET) showed significant difference between the varieties; Whinchal showed the slowest 6.0 days.

  • Dentinogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disorder of dentin formation, usually exhibiting an autosomal dominant mode of transmission. Type I dentinogenesis imperfecta occurs in patients afflicted with osteogenesis imperfecta. Type II dentinogenesis imperfecta is not associated with osteogenesis imperfecta. Type III dentinogenesis imperfecta (Brandywine type) occurs in a racial isolate area in the state of Maryland. In all three types, teeth of both dentitions are affected with variable clinical appearances. The teeth are opalescent with the color ranging from bluish-gray to brown to yellowish. The dentin is abnormally soft, providing inadequate functional support to the overlying enamel. Although the enamel is normal, it fractures or chips away easily, exposing the occlusal and incisal dentin. The exposed soft dentin often undergoes rapid and severe functional attrition. The teeth exhibit bulb-shaped crowns with constricted cementoenamel junctions and thin roots. The teeth will exhibit varying stages of obliteration of the coronal and root pulpal chambers. The cementum, periodontal ligament and supporting alveolar bone appear normal. The enamel is normal. The mantle dentin remains nearly normal, whereas the remaining dentin is severely dysplastic. The dentinal tubules are disoriented, irregular, widely spaced, and usually larger than normal.

  • The author carried out an experiment to find out the response of sea-bass, Epinephelus septemfasciatus (Thunberg) to the color lights. The experimental tank (360L$\times$50W$\times$55H cm) was set up in a dark room. Six longitudinal sections with 60 cm intervals are marked in the tank to observe the location of the fish. Water depth in the tank was kept 50 cm level. Light bulbs of 20 W at the both ends of the tank projected the light horizontally into the tank. Two different colored filters were selected from four colors of red, blue, yellow, and white, and they were placed in front of the light bulbs to make different colors of light. Light intensity were controlled by use of auxiliary filters intercepted between the bulb and the filter. The fishes were acclimatized in the dark for 50 minutes before they were employed in the experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times in 30 second intervals, and the mean of the number of fish in each section was given as the gathering rate of the fish. The colors favourited by the fish was found in the order of blue, red, white and yellow in day time, and red, blue, yellow and white at night time. The gathering rate of fish on illumination period was not constant and fluctuated with irregularity. The difference of the gathering rate on two different colors of light was small and the difference was larger in night time then in day time.

The difference of the average distribution on two different colors of light was 7.18%(0.35-19.55%), and the difference in the daytime(8.20%) was larger than at night (6.15%). The gathering rate of fish on illumination period didn't show the regular trend of increase and decrease, and was fluctuated with instability. The difference of the gathering rate on two different colors of light wasn't distinct, and the difference in the daytime was larger than at night.

  • There are two kinds of calla belonging to the Zantedeschia spp. depending on the growing condition. Between them, various colored calla with flower shape and flower color are very popular as cut flowers. However, colored calla is very low in natural reproduction rate, and it takes a long time to obtain a flowering bulb. So it is urgent to establish a large breeding system of good varieties. In this study, various plant growth hormone treatments were carried out to improve the growth of the plants in calla. Root formation was the highest at 81.5 % in basal MS medium, and the formation of shoot and multiple shoots were the highest at 100.0 % and 36.4 % in the combined treatment of BA 2.0 mg/L and IBA 1.0 mg/L, respectively. In fresh weight, the highest growth rate was observed with 11.2 times increase in BA 2.0 mg/L single treatment. Auxin and cytokinin mixed treatment were widely used in previous studies and positive effects on the growth of calla plants will help to establish the micro-propagation system.

  • The present study has been carried out to investigate the effect of Bactokil(made from didecyldimethyl ammonium chloride isopropanol and water) and Taipet-F (made from natural vitamin E, L-ascorbic acid, glyceride and gallic acid) on retarding lipid oxidation in boiled-dried anchovy. To process boiled-dried anchovy, boiled anchovy dried in cabinet drier $(dry-bulb\;temperature\;40^{\circ}C)$ for 1 hour were fronted with the Bactokil, the Taipet-F and mixture of Bactokil and Taipet-F, respectively. Anchovy fronted with chemicals were redried for 8 hours, packed in polyethylene film bag, and then stored at room temperature $(24{\pm}3^{\circ}C)$. These products were compared with control(untreated with chemicals) during storage. The changes in volatile basic nitrogen of each product was negligible during storage. The thiobarbituric acid and peroxide values of each product increased up to 10 days of storage, and then decreased. In color value of each product, L value increased, while n, b and ${\bigtriangleup}E$ values decreased during storage. The changes in brown pigment formation of each product increased up to final stage of storage. From the results of chemical analysis and sensory evaluation, the product treated with Taipet-F(0.5%, v/v) was the most effective on retarding lipid oxidation of the boiled -dried anchovy, followed by the product treated withthe mixture of Bactokil (0.04%, v/v) and Taipet-F (0.5%, v/v), the product treated with Bactokil(0.04%, v/v) and control, in the order named.
