  • Energy consumption by buildings accounts for a large part of the world‘s energy consumption. Methods to analyze building energy consumption before construction have been studied for decades. With BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology, architects can easily export building information to data models in order to analyze the design‘s effect on building energy efficiency. Although several BIM-based energy simulation applications are currently available, utilizing these applications for energy efficiency simulation is difficult. In this paper, by comparing existing BIM-based energy applications, the authors test the building energy efficiencies estimated by some BIM models, offer ideas and solutions to problems that appeared during the test process and propose new methods for BIM-based energy evaluation based on quantitative factors.

  • This work aims to develop a platform to investigate the effect of operation schedules on the building energy consumption and to derive a simulation model based optimal start and stop daily strategy. An open-source building energy simulation tool DOE2 is used for the engine, and the developed simulation model is validated using ASHRAE guideline 14. The effect of late-start/early-stop operation of HVAC system on the daily building energy consumption was analyzed using the developed simulation model. It was found that about 10% of energy consumption cut was possible using the control strategy for an hour of advance of the stop operation, and about 3% per an hour of delay of the start operation.

  • According to the actual situation of a university, the emergency evacuation simulation is modeled based on the physical sign, evacuation speed and personnel ratio using the pathfinder software. The experimental construction export utilization rate is compared with the preliminary simulation scenario. The simulation results show that the utilization rate of evacuation stairs and evacuation exits is significantly improved. The optimized solution can provide the most effective evacuation passage, and the research results can provide the basis for the rational planning and management of evacuation passage in university experiment building.

  • Vertical meteorological conditions encountered by super tall buildings, such as wind speed, temperature and humidity, vary due to their height. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these environmental changes to properly estimate the heating and cooling loads, and to minimize the energy demands for HVAC in super tall buildings. This paper aims to analyze how vertical meteorological changes affect heating and cooling loads of super tall buildings by using numerical simulation. A radiosonde, which observes atmospheric parameters of upper air such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity and pressure, was used to provide weather data for the building load simulation. A hypothetical super tall building was used for the simulation to provide quantified characteristics of the heating and cooling loads, comparing the lower, middle and upper parts of the building. The effect of weather data on the heating and cooling loads in super tall building was also discussed.

  • Light environment in the school building is one of the most important elements of the plan in order to improve student's ability to learn and the healthy growth. Thus, the window plan of the school building is a great addition to improve environmental-friendly performance through the daylight control. Daylight is highly beneficial for improving the indoor environmental quality and reducing building energy consumption, daylighting applications are scarcely considered, especially during the school building design process, because of lack of previous studies on the light environment of student and complex simulation process. Therefore, daylighting process were performed using ECOTECT, which has various advantage such as easy user interface and simple simulation processes. ECOTECT simulation were performed using weather data. As a result, ECOTECT simulation are performed for daylight autonomy and useful daylight illuminance. Using this data, Window planing is to propose and effective method in the early stages of design.

  • Ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) systems have become an efficient alternative to conventional cooling and heating methods due to their higher energy using efficiency. Although some experimental and simulation works related to performance analysis of GCHP systems for commercial buildings have been done, relatively little has been reported on the performance evaluation of GCHP systems for school buildings. The purpose of this simulation study is to evaluate the performance of a hypothetical GCHP system for a school building in Seoul. We collected various data of building specifications and construction materials for the building and then modeled to calculate hourly building loads with SketchuUp and TRNSYS V17. In addition, we used GLD (Ground Loop Design) V2016, a GCHP system design and simulation software, to design the GCHP system for the building and to simulate temperature of circulating water in ground heat exchanger. The variation of entering source temperature (EST) into the system was calculated with different prediction time and then each result was compared. For 20 years of prediction time, EST for baseline design (Case A) based on the hourly simulation results were outranged from the design criteria.

  • This paper represents a method of existing building energy simulation using energy audit data. Energy audit must be carried out for reasonable analysis, because characteristics of existing buildings such as efficiency of fan, pump, flow rate, pressure, COP and operating schedule could be changed during the building operation. These building characteristics should be measured to estimate actual energy consumption of the existing building. In this study, we conducted energy audit and calculated energy savings for a 7-stories building as a case-study. The energy audit data were used to calibrate the building model of EnergyPlus simulation. Baseline model validated according to M&V guideline index. As a result, building characteristics are significant parameters making a big impact on energy savings in existing buildings.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of multizone simulation that enables to grasp of details about microbial contaminant problem in an multistoried apartment. We used actual indoor test data to figure up microbial contaminant level as initial value for the multizone simulation and estimated the various effects of indoor occupant infected with germs such as bacteria and fungus and the performance of air sterilization by using multizone simulation in substitute for infeasible experimental approach. The results show that natural ventilation make ourselves generally useful for removing indoor microbial contaminants. The results also show that the performance of air sterilization reach the maximum in the case of using mechanical ventilation and UVGI air sterilizer. The conclusion is that this multizone simulation is useful tool for actual design method for immune building systems.

  • The most urgent measure to be taken for a rapid rescue when a building collapse happens is to designate or predict a possible location where human beings are alive. It is, however, very difficult to find and correctly designate such cavities by conventional geophysical survey due to a pile of debris of building members. In this study, the simulation of building collapse induced by an earthquake was conducted to predict forming pattern of a existing cavities. The simulation cases included the influence of structure wall existence and height of building. Three types of building structure: five-story, ten-story and fifteen-story were prepared as a simulation case. In the case of high building, a collapse range on the inside of the building increased consequently lowering the possibility of lifeguard cavern forming. In addition, when a wall exists in the basement floor, the possibility that existing cavities could be formed increased compared to the cases without wall.
