Building extraction is one of the essential issues for 3D city modelling. In recent years, high-resolution satellite imagery has become widely available and it brings new methodology for urban mapping. In this paper, we have developed a semi-automatic algorithm to determine building heights from monoscopic high-resolution satellite data. The algorithm is based on the analysis of the projected shadow and actual shadow of a building. Once two roof comer points are measured manually, the algorithm detects (rectangular) roof boundary automatically. Then it estimates a building height automatically by projecting building shadow onto the image for a given building height, counting overlapping pixels between the projected shadow and actual shadow, and finding the height that maximizes the number of overlapping pixels. Once the height and roof boundary are available, the footprint and a 3D wireframe model of a building can be determined. The proposed algorithm is tested with IKONOS images over Deajeon city and the result is compared with the building height determined by stereo analysis. The accuracy of building height extraction is examined using standard error of estimate.

This study has been given careful consideration to an induction of the mixed-use districts for the efficiency of Land Use, the rational plot planning and the mixture/complex among the functions in order to complement the zoning plan with the primary purpose to purify the usage of landscape. Furthermore, it is aimed to indicate the implementations through the medium of the in-depth analysis about the cardinal factors such as the standards on the regional location, building size and building uses in the case of designating the Mixed-use districts.Abstract This study has been examined by the aspect of scope for securing the adequacy of Site Division Restriction, Floor Area Ratio, Building Coverage Ratio and Outdoor Area Ratio in the "Mixed-Use Districts" and especially, by the medium of the in-depth analysis about the actual condition of building and outdoor space scales. It has been deduced the scale standards by using the simulation and correlation analysis among the factors of those buildings and outdoor spaces. Moreover, it has been applied the analysis method of using the building scale, especially, the latter has analyzed the total 1,656 different types classified by 3 patterns of Plottage and Building Coverage Ratio, 9 patterns of the factor change on Outdoor Area Ratio and 8 different patterns of road width.

Several water tanks installed in the building were damaged during the Gyeongju earthquake (2016) and the Pohang earthquake (2017). Since a water tank for fire protection is very important component, seismic safety should be ensured. In this study, an interaction between a water tank and a building was studied by the dynamic analysis of the RC building with the water tank. In case the water tank was installed on the roof of the RC building, it was confirmed that it did not significantly affect the response of the building. Based on the result, dynamic response characteristics of the water tank in the building were studied using two SDOF models represented dynamic behavior of the water tanks under earthquake. An earthquake time-history analysis was carried out with variables of aspect ratio of the tank, story of the building, and installed location in the building using three kinds of earthquakes.
For floating buildings may fl oat on the water for a long time, they are constantly affected by various environmental loads such as wind and wave loads. In this study to find the wave effect on the floating building, five models are designed using steel moment resisting frame. It is assumed that the lower part of the floating building is a reinforced concrete pontoon, while the upper part is a three-story steel frame. To analyze floating buildings affected by wind and wave loads, hydro-dynamic and substructure analysis are performed. As input loads, this study set limits that the mean wind velocity is 35 m/s and the significant wave height is 0.5 m for the residential building. From the hydrodynamic analysis, the time-history acceleration of building is obtained and transformed into a base ground input for a substructure analysis of the superstructure of the building. Finally the mean of the maximum from 30 dynamic analysis of the floating buildings are used to be compared with the results of the same model on the ground. It was shown that the dynamic results with wind and wave loads are not always lesser than the static results which are calculated with static equivalent wind load for a building that is located on the ground.
When conducting seismic assessment of an asymmetric building, it is essential to carry out three-dimensional analysis considering all the possible directions of seismic input. For this purpose, the author proposed a simplified procedure is to predict the largest peak seismic response of an asymmetric building subjected to horizontal bidirectional ground motion acting in an arbitrary angle of incidence in previous study. This simplified procedure has been applied to torsionally stiff (TS) asymmetric buildings with regular elevation. However, the suitability of this procedure to estimate the peak response of an asymmetric building with vertical irregularity, such as an asymmetric building with setback, has not been assessed. In this article, the pushover-based simplified procedure is applied to estimate the peak response of asymmetric buildings with bidirectional setback. Nonlinear dynamic (time-history) analysis of two six-storey asymmetric buildings with bidirectional setback and designed according to strong-column weak beam concept is carried out considering various directions of seismic input, and the results compared with those estimated by the proposed method. The largest peak displacement estimated by the simplified method agrees well with the envelope of the dynamic analysis response. The suitability assessment of the simplified procedure to analysed building models is made as well based on pushover analysis results.

This paper presents an automated computer vision-based system to update BIM data by leveraging multi-modal visual data collected from existing buildings under inspection. Currently, visual inspections are conducted for building envelopes or mechanical systems, and auditors analyze energy-related contextual information to examine if their performance is maintained as expected by the design. By translating 3D surface thermal profiles into energy performance metrics such as actual R-values at point-level and by mapping such properties to the associated BIM elements using XML Document Object Model (DOM), the proposed method shortens the energy performance modeling gap between the architectural information in the as-designed BIM and the as-is building condition, which improve the reliability of building energy analysis. Several case studies were conducted to experimentally evaluate their impact on BIM-based energy analysis to calculate energy load. The experimental results on existing buildings show that (1) the point-level thermography-based thermal resistance measurement can be automatically matched with the associated BIM elements; and (2) their corresponding thermal properties are automatically updated in gbXML schema. This paper provides practitioners with insight to uncover the fundamentals of how multi-modal visual data can be used to improve the accuracy of building energy modeling for retrofit analysis. Open research challenges and lessons learned from real-world case studies are discussed in detail.

Up until recently, the energy and the economic analysis of a cogeneration system have been implemented by a manual calculation that is based on monthly thermal loads of buildings. In this study, a cogeneration system modeling validation with a detail building energy simulation, eQUEST, for a building energy and cost prediction has been implemented. By analyzing the hourly building electricity and thermal loads, it enables users to decide proper cogeneration system capacity and to estimate more accurate building energy consumption. eQUEST also verified the energy analysis when the heat pump system is integrated with the cogeneration system. The mechanical system configuration benefits from the high efficiency heat pump system while avoiding the building electricity demand increase. Economic analysis such as LCC (Life Cycle Cost) method is carried out to verify economical benefits of the system by applying actual utility rates of KEPCO(Korea Electricity Power COmpany) and KOGAS(KOrea GAS company).

Ground source heat pump(GSHP) systems have been attracted as high-efficient energy-saving technology, but the building clients and designers have hesitated to use GSHP systems which is a expensive initial installation and a uncertain economic feasibility. Therefore In order to reduce the initial cost, many researchers have focused on the energy-pile system using the structure of the building as a heat exchanger. Even though many of experimental studies for energy pile system have been conducted, there was not enough data of a quantitative evaluation with the economic analysis and comprehensive analysis for energy-pile. In this study, the feasibility study for the energy pile system with a barrette pile was conducted by the performance analysis and LCC assessment.

When apartment buildings are builed and re-builded, they tends to be taller. This tendency causes the problems for solar access and view in the neighboring area. So the impact factor of sunlight and view by apartment building in its neighboring area is examined. The results of this study are as follows: When analyzing sky view by dividing the sky vault into the differential area, the analysis of view can be efficient. The shorter the apartment building, the more the continuous solar access time. And the taller the building, the more the accumulated solar access time. As the height of building is taller and it is farther from the border of apartment building, view ratio, sky view ratio, and form ratio are increased. It implies that the slimmer the building, the more the visual environment can be improved.
