  • The objective of this study is to propose a simple and accurate analytical model for HSS braces. For this purpose, a physical theory model is adopted. Rectangular hollow section steel (HSS) braces are considered in this study. To accurately simulate the cyclic behavior of braces using the physical theory model, empirical equations calculating constituent parameters are implemented on the analytical model, which were proposed in the companion paper. The constituent parameters are cyclic brace growth, cyclic buckling load, and the incidence of local buckling and fracture. The analytical model proposed in this study was verified by comparing actual and simulated cyclic curves of brace specimens. It is observed that the proposed model accurately simulates the cyclic behavior of the braces throughout whole response range.

  • This paper studies nonlinear stability behavior of a nanocrystalline silicon curved nanoshell considering strain gradient size-dependency. Nanocrystallines are composite materials with an interface phase and randomly distributed nano-size grains and pores. Imperfectness of the curved nanoshell has been defined based on an initial deflection. The formulation of nanocrystalline nanoshell has been established by thin shell theory and an analytical approach has been used in order to solve the buckling problem. For accurately describing the size effects related to nano-grains or nano-pores, their surface energies have been included. Nonlinear stability curves of the nanoshell are affected by the size of nano-grain, curvature radius and nano-pore volume fraction. It is found that increasing the nano-pore volume fraction results in lower buckling loads.

  • Observing the unique stress-strain curves of the superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) in tension and compression, the primary intention of this study is to investigate the behavior of the shafts made of the same material, under torsional loading-unloading cycles for large angle of twist. Experiments have been performed for the superelastic SMA shafts with different unsupported lengths and angles of twist and the results are compared with those of stainless steel (SUS304) shafts under similar test conditions. As expected for the superelastic SMA, the residual strains are small enough after each cycle and consequently, the hysteresis under loading-reverse loading is much narrower than that for the SUS304. For large angle of twists, the torsional strength of the superelastic SMA increases nonlinearly and exceeds that of SUS304. Most interestingly, the slender solid superelastic SMA shafts are found to buckle when acted upon torsion for large angle of twist.

  • For reaching large inelastic deformations without a substantial loss in strength, the potential plastic hinge regions of the reinforced concrete structural members should be confined by adequate transverse reinforcement. Therefore, simple and realistic representation of confined concrete behaviour is needed for inelastic analysis of reinforced concrete structures. In this study, a trilinear stress-strain model is proposed for the axial behaviour of confined concrete. The model is based on experimental work that was carried out on nearly full size specimens. During the interpretation of experimental data, the buckling and strain hardening of the longitudinal reinforcement are also taken into account. The proposed model is used for predicting the stress-strain relationships of confined concrete specimens tested by other researchers. Although the proposed model is simpler than most of the available models, the comparisons between the predicted results and experimental data indicate that it can represent the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete quite realistically.

  • Static stability behaviors of annular sandwich plates constructed from two layers of particle-reinforced nanocomposites have been investigated in the present article. The type of nanoscale particles has been considered to be graphene oxide powders (GOPs). The particles are assumed to have uniform and graded dispersions inside the matrix and the material properties have been defined according to Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model. The core layer is assumed to have honeycomb configuration. Annular plate has been formulated according to thin shell assumptions considering geometrical nonlinearities. After solving the governing equations via Galerkin's technique, it is showed that the post-buckling curves of annular sandwich plates rely on the core wall thickness, amount of GOP particles, sector radius, and thickness of layers.

  • In this paper, a finite element (FE) simulation has been developed in order to examine the nonlinear stability of reinforced sandwich beams with graphene oxide powders (GOPs). In this regard, the nonlinear stability curves have been obtained asuming that the beam is under compressive loads leading to its buckling. The beam is considered to be a three-layered sandwich beam with metal core and GOP reinforced face sheets and it is rested on elastic substrate. Moreover, a higher-order refined beam theory has been considered to formulate the sandwich beam by employing the geometrically perfect and imperfect beam configurations. In the solving procedure, the utalized finite element simulation contains a novel beam element in which shear deformation has been included. The calculated stability curves of GOP-reinforced sandwich beams are shown to be dependent on different parameters such as GOP amount, face sheet thickness, geometrical imperfection and also center deflection.

  • In this research, the behavior of tube-in-tube BRBs (TiTBRBs) has been investigated. In a typical TiTBRB, the yielding core tube is located inside the outer restraining one to dissipate energy through extensive plastic deformation, while the outer restraining tube remains essentially elastic. With the aid of FE analyses, the monotonic and cyclic behavior of the proposed TiTBRBs have been studied as individual brace elements. Subsequently, a detailed finite element model of a representative single span-single story frame equipped with such a TiTBRB has been constructed and both monotonic and cyclic behavior of the proposed TiTBRBs have been explored under the application of the AISC loading protocol at the braced frame level. With the aid of backbone curves derived from the FE analyses, a simplified frame model has been developed and verified through comparison with the results of the detailed FE model. It has been shown that, the simplified model is capable of predicting closely the cyclic behavior of the TiTBRB frame and hence can be used for design purposes. Considering type of connection detail used in a frame, the TiTBRB member which behave satisfactorily at the brace element level under cyclic loading conditions, may suffer global buckling due to the flexural demand exerted from the frame to the brace member at its ends. The proposed TiTBRB suit tubular members of offshore structures and the application of such TiTBRB in a typical offshore platform has been introduced and studied in a single frame level using detailed FE model.

  • Compression experiments were conducted to investigate the compressive behavior of built-up open-section columns consisting of four cold-formed steel channels (BOCCFSs) of different lengths, thicknesses, and cross-section sizes (OB90 and OB140). The load-displacement curves, failure modes, and maximum compression strength values were analyzed in detail. The tests showed that the failure modes of the OB90 specimens transformed from a large deformation concentration induced by local buckling to flexural buckling with the increase in the slenderness ratio. The failure modes of all OB140 specimens were deformation concentration, except for one long specimen, whose failure mode was flexural buckling. When the slenderness ratios of the specimens were less than 55, the failure modes were controlled by local buckling. Finite element models were built using ABAQUS software and validated to further analyze the mechanical behavior of the BOCCFSs. A parametric study was conducted and used to explore a wide design space. The numerical analysis results showed that when the screw spacing was between 150 mm and 450 mm, the difference in the maximum compression strength values of the specimens was less than 4%. The applicability and effectiveness of the design methods in Chinese GB50018-2002 and AISI-S100-2016 for calculating the compression strength values of the BOCCFSs were evaluated. The prediction methods based on the assumptions produced predictions of the strength that were between 33% to 10% conservative as compared to the tests and the finite element analysis.

  • Aiming at the development trend of light weight and high strength of engineering structures, this paper experimentally investigated the seismic performance of circular-in-square high-strength concrete-filled double skin steel tubular (HCFDST) stub columns with out-of-code width-to-thickness (B/t) ratios. Typical failure mode of HCFDST stub columns appeared with the infill material crushing, steel fracture and local buckling of outer tubes as well as the inner buckling of inner tubes. Subsequently, the detailed analysis on hysteretic curves, skeleton curves and ductility, energy dissipation, stiffness degradation and lateral force reduction was conducted to reflect the influences of hollow ratios, axial compression ratios and infill types, e.g., increasing hollow ratio from 0.54 to 0.68 and 0.82 made a slight effect on bearing capacity compared to the ductility coefficients; the higher axial compression ratio (e.g., 0.3 versus 0.1) significantly reduced the average bearing capacity and ductility; the HCFDST column SCFST-6 filled with concrete obviously displayed the larger initial secant stiffness with a percentage 34.20% than the column SCFST-2 using engineered cementitious composite (ECC); increasing hollow ratios, axial compression ratios could accelerate the drop speed of stiffness degradation. The out-of-code HCFDST stub columns with reasonable design could behave favorable hysteretic performance. A theoretical model considering the tensile strength effect of ECC was thereafter established and verified to predict the moment-resisting capacity of HCFDST columns using ECC. The reported research on circular-in-square HCFDST stub columns can provide significant references to the structural application and design.

  • The cyclic behavior of braces is complex due to their asymmetric properties in tension and compression. For accurately simulating the cyclic curves of braces, it is important to predict the major parameters such as cyclic brace growth, cyclic buckling load, incidence local buckling and fracture with good precision. For a given brace, the most accurate values of these parameters can be estimated throughout experiments. However, it is almost impossible to conduct experiments whenever an analytical model has to be established for many braces in building structures due to enormous cost and time. For avoid such difficulties, empirical equations for predicting constituent parameters are proposed from regression analyses based on test results of various braces. This study focuses on rectangular hollow structural section(HSS) steel braces, which have been popularly used in construction practice owing to its sectional efficiency.
