  • Sound in the ocean is scattered by inhomogeneities of many different kinds, such as the sea surface, the sea bottom, or the randomly distributed bubble layer and school of fish. The total sum of the scattered signals from these scatterers is called reverberation. In order to simulate the reverberation signal precisely, combination of a propagation model with proper scattering models, corresponding to each scattering mechanism, is required. In this article, we develop a reverberation model based on the ray theory easily combined with the existing scattering models. Developed reverberation model uses (1) Chapman-Harris empirical formula and APL-UW model/SSA model for the sea surface scattering. For the sea bottom scattering, it uses (2) Lambert's law and APL-UW model/SSA model. To verify our developed reverberation model, we compare our results with those in Ellis' article and 2006 reverberation workshop. This verified reverberation model SNURM is used to simulate reverberation signal for the neighboring seas of South Korea at mid frequency and the results from model are compared with experimental data in time domain. Through comparison between experiment data and model results, the features of reverberation signal dependent on environment of each sea is investigated and this analysis leads us to select an appropriate scattering function for each area of interest.

  • Recently domestic drinking water industry has recognized membrane-based technology as a promising alternative for water treatment. To ensure successful application of membrane processes, the integrity of membrane systems should be maintained. According to US EPA guidance, the pressure decay test based on the bubble point theory is recommended to detect any membrane defection of which size is close to the smallest diameter of Cryptosporidium oocysts, $3{\mu}m$. Proper implementation of the pressure decay test is greatly affected by initial test pressure, and the interpretation of the test results is associated with upper control limit. This study is conducted to investigate various factors affecting determination of initial test prtessure and upper control limit, including membrane-based parameters such as pore shape correction factor, surface tension and contact angle, and system-based parameters, such as volumetric concentration factor and total volume of system. In this paper, three different hollow fibers were used to perform the pressure decay test. With identical initial test pressure applied, their pressure decay tendency were different from each other. This finding can be explained by the micro-structure disparity of those membranes which is verified by FESEM images of those membranes. More specifically, FESEM images revealed that three hollow fibers have asymmetry, deep finger, shallow finger pore shape, respectively. In addition, sensitivity analysis was conducted on five parameters mentioned above to elucidate their relation to determination of initial test pressure and upper control limit. In case of initial pressure calculation, the pore shape correction factor has the highest value of sensitivity. For upper control limit determination, system factors have greater impact compared to membrane-based parameters.

  • The purpose of this research, through kinetic analyses and pilot plant experimentation of biofilm filtration reactor, is to study the theoretical equation of head loss in the Biofilm Reactor. The Head loss in the biofilm reactor has occurred due to the biofilm growth and the adhesion to the media surface and stagnation of upflow air bubble, which have caused the pore spaces to become smaller. On a basis of the head loss theory of sand filtration, therefore, the following equation of head loss for the biofilm reactor was proposed from this research results and proved to be possible to apply the equation for practical design of the biofilm filter. $h={\frac{h_o}{L}}{\int}^L_00.58\exp[-4.5){\sigma}_B)][{\frac{1-{\varepsilon}_o+({\sigma}_B)}{1-{\varepsilon}_o}}]^2{[\frac{{\varepsilon}_o}{{\varepsilon}_o-({{\varepsilon}_B)}}]^3dz$ here ${\sigma}_B=0.130+0.001{\theta}$.

  • Objectives : We applied the term weighting method used in the field of data search to quantify relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs, and, based on this, we aim to introduce a method of visualizing the characteristics of medicinal herbs. Methods : We proposed HF-IFF, an adaptation of TF-IDF, which is a term weighting measurement method adapted in the field of data search. Using this method, we deduced relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs In Cheongkangeuigam that was published in 1984 by organizing the medical theory of Cheongkang, Kim Younghoon, and visualized this as a graph in order to compare the characteristics of medicinal herbs used for different symptoms. Results : HF-IFF is the product of HF and IFF, where HF is the frequency of the relevant medicinal herb for a set of symptoms, and IFF is the inverse of the number of formulations (FF) containing that herb. A total of 251 types of medicinal herb are used in Cheongkangeuigam, and 1538 formulations are classified according to 67 types of symptom. The overall mean for HF-IFF was 0.491, with a maximum of 4.566 and a minimum of 0.013. Conclusions : In spite of several limitations, we were able to use HF-IFF to measure relevancy between symptoms and medicinal herbs, with formulations as an intermediate. We were able to use the quantified results to visually express the characteristics of the herbs used for symptoms by bubble chart and word-cloud from HF-IFF.

  • High-frequency bistatic sea surface scattering channels according to sea state were measured at an experimental site of Geoje bay in April 2020, and compared with predictions based on scattering theory. A linear frequency-modulated signal with a center frequency of 128 kHz and a bandwidth of 32 kHz was used for the acoustic measurements. Sea surface wavenumber spectrum was calculated from surface roughness data measured by a wave buoy, and bistatic scattering cross-section of Small Slope Approximation (SSA) based on the wavenumber spectrum was estimated. In addition, scattering from near-surface bubbles using wind speed measured during experiments was considered. Surface scattering channel intensity impulse responses were simulated using the scattering cross-section and the simulation results were compared and analyzed with the field data.

  • When irradiate the power ultrasound into the aqueous solutions, water vapor is decomposed by the heat of very high temperature in the cavitation bubble to produce OH (hydroxyl radical) and H (hydrogen radical), and these radicals play a role in decomposing the substances in aqueous solution by oxidation and/or reduction, and in producing the hydrogen peroxide. Accordingly it is possible to predict that the quantity of hydrogen peroxide produced may correlate with the sonolysis mechanism of the substance in aqueous solution. Thus to confirm this prediction, the quantities of hydrogen peroxide produced from each of the air saturated distilled water and three aqueous solutions of TCE, benzene, and 2,4-DCP that are prepared by dissolving them into distilled water are measured. As a result, it showed that the quantity of hydrogen peroxide produced from the distilled water and three aqueous solutions are increased in order of distilled water>TCE solution>2,4-DCP solution>benzene solution, and decrease with decrease in concentration of organic substance, which coincide with the sonolysis mechanisms reported that TCE in aqueous solution is decomposed directly by the pyrolysis in and around the cavitation bubbles when its concentration is high and by the radical reaction when low, however, benzene and 2,4-DCP are decomposed not only by the pyrolysis but also by the radical reactions. Effects of such experimental parameters as the acoustic frequency and power and as the concentration showed that the higher the acoustic frequency and the lower the acoustic power, the less the quantity of hydrogen peroxide was produced. This result coincide with the theory of ultrasound for the relation between the cavitation that is the energy source of the power ultrasound in aqueous solution and these experimental parameters.

  • In order to secure the reliability of pathogenic microorganisms such as Cryptosporidium and Giaridia, which are chlorophilic protozoans, membrane filtration systems have been widely used in water purification process. hese integrity tests are classified into direct and indirect methods. Based on the bubble point theory, the pressure-based test in the direct method is presented in the USEPA Guidance Manual with sensitivity to detect a minimum size of pathogenic microorganisms of $3{\mu}m$ or more. Indirect methods are widely used in that they are capable of continuous operation in on-line state, but there is a very low sensitivity of damage detection compared to the direct method, and there is a limit that can not specify the damage area, so it is necessary to improve this sensitivity. In this study, we compared the LRVDIT and UCL values according to the type of membrane defect, number of fiber breaks, and initial set pressure value through the Integrity Test by Pressure Decay Test (PDT).

  • This study attempted to understand the characteristics of images of scientific experiments represented and consumed on YouTube, a representative of today's new media. In particular, this paper analyzes the case studies of YouTube's hydrogen peroxide decomposition experiment based on Baudrillard's theory of Simulation and Simulacra, which discusses the strong status of images and the ambiguity of the boundary between virtual and reality. A total of 14 YouTube videos related to hydrogen peroxide decomposition experiments were analyzed. In those videos, hydrogen peroxide decomposition experiments were typically conducted with several signs representing scientific experiments, but the most important sign in the videos were bubbles produced through experiments. For more public consumption of the content, the bubbles resulted from hydrogen peroxide decomposition reproduced in YouTube have been transformed into a more spectacular image as 'super-huge' and 'explosive' bubble. Considering the influence of new media that can be accessed by students anytime and anywhere, it is positive that science experiments in new media enhance students' intimacy and access to science. At the same time, however, it is also important to note the danger that the purpose of scientific experiments will be limited to only 'showing specular images', due to the nature of new media, which mainly deals with immediate and superficial images. Furthermore, this study argues that improving students' science media literacy is required to critically examine the science-related images represented in the new media based on understanding the characteristics and limitations of new media that deeply affect daily life.
