Design of Prestress for prefabricated bridge piers (조립식 교각의 프리스트레스 설계)

  • Fast construction of bridge structures is a new trend of bridge design. Accelerated bridge construction includes the construction of superstructures and substructures. In order to reduce the construction time for substructures, precast prestressed bridge piers are increasingly applied in other countries. One of the main concern in the design of precast piers is the determination of the axial prestress forces. The behavior of the piers should be investigated under service loadings and ultimate conditions. In this paper, the magnitude of prestress is calculated to control the stress at the joint of precast piers. Considering long-term behavior of prestressed piers, P-M diagrams for precast piers are obtained to verify the ultimate behavior of the piers. Based on these studies, precast piers are applied to the light-railway bridge piers.

The Increment Of The Local Scour Depth At Piers By Constructing The Bridge Between Existing Bridges

  • In this paper, the increment of the local scour depth at piers by constructing the bridge between existing bridges is examined through the experiments in which 5 piers in the non-cohesive bed material in the experimental flume were installed. In the experiments the maximum distance of 25 times of the pier length and the maximum distortion width of 8 times of the pier width were utilized. Through the experimental studies, it was indicated that low flow, which can be characterized as the flow having low Froude numbers, the maximum bed configuration change is obtained when the piers are installed in the straight line in the flor direction without any distortion. However, In the high flow, which can be characterized as the flow having high Froude numbers, the maximum bed configuration change is obtained when the piers are installed with some distortion from the flow direction. The influence of the bed configuration by interaction between bridge piers is changed depending upon the Froude numbers, the distance between piers, and the distortion width between adjacent bridge piers. Also, because the scour patterns are affected by the bed configuration, the maximum scour should be increased by about 60% compared to that in a single pier if the interaction between bridge piers exists. It can be suggested that the maximum scour depth at bridge piers predicted by applying the existing equations should be increased if the interaction between bridge piers exist. Those cases are found when new bridges are constructed successively in the river in the urban area.

  • The pseudo dynamic test has been carried out so as to investigate the seismic performance of RC bridge piers strengthened with and without glass fiber sheets. The Lessons from severe demage of many infrastructures in Kobe(1995) and Northridge(1996) earthquakes have emphasized the need to develop the retrofit measures to enhance flexural strength, ductility and shear strength of RC bridge piers nonseismically designed before 1992. Therefore, the objective of this experimental research is to investigate the seismic behavior of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers by the pseudo dynamic test. and then to enhance the ductility of concrete piers strengthening with glass fiber sheets in the plastic hinge region. 7 circular RC bridge piers were made in a 1/3.4 scale. Important test parameters are confinement steel ratio, retrofitting. load pattern, etc. The seismic behavior of circular concrete piers under artificial ground motions has been evaluated through strength and stiffness degradation, energy dissipation. It can be concluded that existing bridge piers wrapped with glass fibers in the plastic hinge regions could have enough seismic performance.

  • Local scour is associate with particular local types of vortex around bridge piers. This paper is method of protection local scour for the existing Busan City subway 3 Line bridge piers and Gupo large bridge piers. In order to take design of protection of local scour this bridge piers, We calculate the local scour hole of depth , scour width, riprap construction , filter construction by formulas. We had experimental hydraulic model test for this bridge piers in order to take proof for the calculation of local scour. We knew that the vortex intensifies the local flow velocities and acts to erode sediment from the scour hole and transport it downstream. As the result of hydraulic model test, we could suggest three types method of protection local scour this bridges. We knew that FHWA HEC-18(Richardson et al. 2001: Modified CSU) Formula is useful to checking calculation as application of field. One is pier protection using the sheet piles and riprap, the others are pier protection using the riprap with filter and to make renew Wall-caisson. The best method of protection for the existing Busan City subway 3 Line bridge piers and Gupo large bridge piers is pier protection using the sheet piles and riprap.

Seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge piers supported by laminated rubber bearings

  • This paper presents a nonlinear finite element procedure accounting for the effects of geometric as well as material nonlinearities for reinforced concrete bridge piers supported by laminated rubber bearings. Reinforced concrete bridge piers supported by laminated rubber bearings and carrying a cyclic load were analyzed by using a special purpose, nonlinear finite element program, RCAHEST. For reinforced concrete, the proposed robust nonlinear material model captures the salient response characteristics of the bridge piers under cyclic loading conditions and addresses with the influence of geometric nonlinearity on post-peak response of the bridge piers by transformations between local and global systems. Seismic isolator element to predict the behaviors of laminated rubber bearings is also developed. The seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers supported by laminated rubber bearings is assessed analytically. The results show good correlation between the experimental findings and numerical predictions, and demonstrate the reliability and robustness of the proposed analytical model. Additionally, the studies and discussions presented in this investigation provide an insight into the key behavioral aspects of reinforced concrete bridge piers supported by laminated rubber bearings.

  • From the analysis results of some as-built drawings in national roadway bridges in Korea, many bridge piers are expected to show complex shear-flexural behaviour under earthquakes. But the previous research works about the seismic evaluation of bridges considered flexural behaviour RC piers only. In addition, the past bridge design specifications in Korea didn't include limitation on the amount of longitudinal lap splices in the plastic hinge zone of piers. Thus a large majority of non-seismically designed bridge piers in Korea may have lap splices in plastic hinge zone. In this study, prototype pier was selected among existent bridge piers whose failure mode is expected to be complex shear-flexural mode. And then, full scale and 1/2 reduced scale model RC piers with various longitudinal lap splice details were constructed. From the quasi static test results on these model RC piers, the effect of longitudinal lap splices on the seismic performance of bridges piers was analyzed. And the seismic capacity of the non-seismically designed shear-flexural RC piers was evaluated.

A study on application of high strength steel SM570 in bridge piers with stiffened box section under cyclic loading

  • Although a lot of experimental and analytical investigations have been carried out for steel bridge piers made of SS400 and SM490, the formulas available for SS400 and SM490 are not suitable for evaluating ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge piers made of high strength steel (HSS) SM570. The effect of various parameters is investigated in this paper, including plate width-to-thickness ratio, column slenderness ratio and axial compression force ratio, on the ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge box piers made of SM570 steel subjected to cyclic loading. The elasto-plastic behavior of the steel bridge piers under cyclic loads is simulated through plastic large deformation finite element analysis, in which a modified two-surface model (M2SM) including cyclic hardening is employed to trace the material nonlinearity. An extensive parametric study is conducted to study the influences of structural parameters on the ultimate load and deformation capacities. Based on these analytical investigations, new formulas for predicting ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge piers made of SM570 are proposed. This study extends the ultimate load and deformation capacities evaluation of steel bridge piers from SS400, SM490 steels to SM570 steel, and provides some useful suggestions.

Structural performance assessment of deteriorated reinforced concrete bridge piers

  • The aim of this study is to assess the structural performance of deteriorated reinforced concrete bridge piers, and to provide method for developing improved evaluation method. For a deteriorated bridge piers, once the cover spalls off and bond between the reinforcement and concrete has been lost, compressed reinforcements are likely to buckle. By using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program, the accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), is used to analyze reinforced concrete structures. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. Advanced deteriorated material models are developed to predict behaviors of deteriorated reinforced concrete. The proposed numerical method for the structural performance assessment of deteriorated reinforced concrete bridge piers is verified by comparing it with reliable experimental results. Additionally, the studies and discussions presented in this investigation provide an insight into the key behavioral aspects of deteriorated reinforced concrete bridge piers.

Evaluation on Seismic Performance of Limited Ductile RC Bridge Piers by Pseudo-Dynamic Test

  • Pseudo dynamic test for seven circular RC bridge piers has been carried out to investigate their seismic performance subjected to expected artificial earthquake motions. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers, which have been widely used for railway and urban transportation facilities. Important test parameters are confinement steel ratio, and input ground motion. The seismic behavior of circular RC bridge piers under artificial ground motions has been evaluated through displacement ductility, cumulative energy input, and dissipation capacity. It can be concluded that RC bridge piers designed in a limited ductile behavior provision of Eurocode 8 have been determined to show good seismic performance even under moderate artificial earthquakes.

Influence of axial load and loading path on the performance of R.C. bridge piers

  • Piers are the most vulnerable part of a bridge structure during an earthquake event. During Kobe earthquake in 1995, several bridge piers of the Hanshin Expressway collapsed for more than 600m of the bridge length. In this paper, the most important results of an experimental and analytical investigation of ten reinforced concrete bridge piers specimens with the same cross section subjected to constant axial (or variable) load and reversed (or one direction) cycling loading are presented. The objective was to investigate the main parameters influencing the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers. It was found that loading history and axial load intensity had a great influence on the performance of piers, especially concerning strength and stiffness degradation as well as the energy dissipation. Controlling these parameters is one of the keys for an ideal seismic performance for a given structure during an eventual seismic event. Numerical models for the tested specimens were developed and analyzed using SeismoStruct software. The analytical results show reasonable agreement with the experimental ones. The analysis not only correctly predicted the stiffness, load, and deformation at the peak, but also captured the post-peak softening as well. The analytical results showed that, in all cases, the ratio, experimental peak strength to the analytical one, was greater than 0.95.
