  • We construct a family of hyperbolic 3-manifolds by pairwise identifications of faces in the boundary of certain polyhedral 3-balls and prove that all these manifolds are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere over certain family of links with two components. These extend some results from [5] and [10] concerning with the branched coverings of the whitehead link.

  • We construct an infinite family of closed 3-manifolds M(2m+ 1, n, k) which are identification spaces of certain polyhedra P(2m+ 1, n, k), for integers $m\;\ge\;1,\;n\;\ge\;3,\;and\;k\;\ge\;2$. We prove that they are (n / d)- fold cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere branched over certain links $L_{(m,d)}$, where d = gcd(n, k), by handle decomposition of orbifolds. This generalizes the results in [3] and [2] as a particular case m = 2.

  • The four species of the suborder Holaxonia, Anthogorgia japonica Studer, 1889 of family Acanthogorgiidae, Astrogorgia rubra (Thomson & Henderson, 1906), Euplexaura attenuata (Nutting, 1910), and E. erecta (Kukenthal, 1908) of family Plexauridae have been newly recorded in Korea. They were collected from intertidal and sublittoral zones in the western and southern coasts and Jeju-do Island of Korea by SCUBA diving and fishing nets from 1969 to 2010. This study approaches holaxonians by focusing on external and internal morphologies including size, form, and color of colonies, branches, polyps, coenenchyme, axis, and spicules. Anthogorgia japonica is characterized by its planar growth form, dichotomously branched form, non-retractile polyps, and Astrogorgia rubra by arrangement of calyxes being situated in lateral side at stems and alternately in all sides at branches. Euplexaura attenuata is sparsely and laterally branched colony, and has straight wand-like stems. Euplexaura erecta has branches which run parallel to the main stem.

  • We study a family of 2-bridge knots with 2-tangles in the 3-sphere admitting a genus two 1-bridge splitting. We also observe a geometric relation between (g - 1, 1)-splitting and (g,0)- splitting for g = 2,3. Moreover we construct a family of closed orientable 3-manifolds which are n-fold cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere branched over those 2-bridge knots.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the changing process in the Ddeulzip of Jaeryoung Lee's clan family. The subject of this study is clan family of Jaeryoung Lee in Andong Area. The period of Ddeulzip's changing process is divided into largely three parts. The establishment process and changing process for Jaeryoung Lee's family is analyzed during early (15~16C), mid(17~18C) and late(19~20C) periods. The characteristics of early periods is that it made a main ancestral building of Ddeulzip form. Those of mid Chosun period is in their strong will to preserve their ancestral house. During the late period, many of the different styles of Ddeulzip were constructed due to the stable environment of both political and economical status. The residential house of Jaeryoung Lee family that were centered in Youngduk and Youngyang area include diverse forms for both high and middle class social status. Jaeryoung Lee family's Ddeulzip is thus considered to bring about the firm foundation as a clan family representing the Andong cultural area through the development of Ddeulzip.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the changing process in the Ddeulzip of Jinsung Lee clan family. The subject of this study is clan family of Jinsung Lee in Andong Cultural Area. The period of Chosun Dynasty is divided into largely three parts. The establishment process for Jinsung Lee's family is analyzed during early (15~16C) and mid(17~18C) periods, and changing process is analyzed during mid(19~20C) and late periods. The characteristics of early Chosun Ddeulzip is that it made a foundation to construct a Ddeulzip form. Those of mid Chosun period is in their strong will to preserve their ancestral house which is well manifested through the restoration of Taegye's ancestral house. During the late Chosun period, many of the different styles of Ddeulzip were constructed due to the stable environment of both political and economical status. The residential house of Jinsung Lee family that were centered in Yean area include diverse forms for both high and middle class social status. Jinsung Lee family's Ddeulzip is thus considered to bring about the firm foundation as a clan family representing the Andong cultural area through the development of Ddeulzip.

  • Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a disorder that involves the metabolism of branched chain amino acids, arising from a defect in branched-chain ${\alpha}$-keto acid dehydrogenase complex. Mutations have been identified in the BCKDHA, BCKDHB, or DBT genes, which encode different subunits of the BCKDH complex. Although encephalopathy and progressive neurodegeneration are its major manifestations, the severity of the disease may range from the severe classic type to milder intermediate variants. We report two Korean siblings with the milder intermediate MSUD who were diagnosed with MSUD by a combination of newborn screening tests using tandem mass spectrometry and family genetic screening for MSUD. At diagnosis, the patients' plasma levels were elevated for leucine, isoleucine, valine, and alloisoleucine, and branched-chain ${\alpha}$-keto acids and branched-chain ${\alpha}$-hydroxy acids were detected in their urine. BCKDHA, BCKDHB, and DBT analysis was performed, and two novel mutations were identified in BCKDHB. Our patients were thought to have the milder intermediate variant of MSUD, rather than the classic form. Although MSUD is a typical metabolic disease with poor prognosis, better outcomes can be expected if early diagnosis and prompt management are provided, particularly for milder forms of the disease.

  • The cellular fatty acids and quinones of streptomycetes isolated from volcanic soils were analysed. The strains contained fatty acids of 14 to 17 carbon chains, and 12-methyltetradecanoic acid and 14 methylpentadecanoic acid were dominant in most strains. The total profiles consisted of 74% branched fatty acid family, 16.8% linear family and 8.2% unsaturated family. The largest cluster of grey spore meases defined by numerical classification was separated from the remainders in the principal component analysis, but the other clusters were overlapped with one another. In the analysis of respiratory quinones, all of the strains contained either the menaquinone of 9 isoprene units with 6 hydrogenations of 8 hydrogenations as the major species. The distribution of menaquinones among the clusters could provide an important key in the chemotaxonomy of streptomycetes.

  • High molecular weight dextran (39% alcohol, v/v), less soluble dextran, eluted from this column between T 500 and T 2000, a commercial linear dextran, Soluble dextran (45% alcohol, v/v) eluted at between T 70 and T 150 dextran. The molecular weight average of total dextran (50% alcohol, v/v) was between 150,000 to 500,000. A few oligosaccharides were detected from hydrolyzates of less soluble dextran. The hydrolyzates of soluble dextran were a family of DP 1 to 6 isomaltooligosaccharides. Compounds greater than DP 4 were branched isomaltooligosaacharides.
