  • The purpose of the study described in this paper was to experimentally investigate branch squared T joints with cold formed hollow structural sections under the in plane moment in a Vierendeel Truss. The branch in the T joints was welded to the upper flange of the chord. The main experimental parameters were the ratio of the width to the thickness of the chord ($2{\gamma}$), with ${16.7{\leq}2{\gamma}{\leq}33.3}$, and the width ratio of the branch to the chord ($\beta$), with ${0.40{\leq}{\beta}{\leq}0.71}$. Nine specimens were tested and manufactured in joints under the in plane bending moment. Based on the results of the test, the in plane moment strength of the branch squared T joints was determined according to the bending deformation of the chord flange yielding, regardless of the ratio of the width to the thickness of the chord and the ratio of the width of the branch to the width of the chord. Also, the in plane moment strength of the branch squared T joints in the hollow structural sections can be defined as 1.5 times the moment load at M1%B the strength of the joints that governed the serviceability in the control group. Finally, the experimental results with the branch squared T joints show that the in lane moment strength of the joint increased as $2{\gamma}$ decreased and $\beta$ increased.

  • Many researches have been devoted to the small area estimation related with the area level statistics. Almost all of the small area estimation methods are derived based on minimization of mean squared error(MSE). Recently Hwang and Shin (2008) suggested an alternative small area estimation method by minimizing mean squared percentage error. In this paper we apply this small area estimation method to the labor statistics, especially monthly wages by a branch area of labor department. The Monthly Labor Survey data (2007) is used for analysis and comparison of these methods.

  • In this paper, the Viterbi decoder containing new branch metrics of the squared Euclidean distance with multiple order phase differences is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate (BER) in the differential detection of the trellis-coded MDPSK-OFDM. The proposed Viterbi decoder is conceptually same as the multiple Phase differential detection method that uses the branch metric with multiple phase differences. Also, we describe the Viterbi algorithm in order to use this branch metrics. Our study shows that such a Viterbi decoder improves BER performance without sacrificing bandwidth and power efficiency. Also, the proposed algorithm can be used in the single carrier modulation.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of multiple trellis coded modulation applied to continuous phase frequency shift keying (MTCM/CPFSK) for the noncoherent receiver without channel state information (CSI) on the interleaved Rician fading channel. In this system, the squared cross-correlation between the received signal and a candidate signal is used as the branch metric of the Viterbi decoder. To obtain the bit error performance of this system, we analyze the approximated pairwise error probability (PEP) and the exact PEP. We also derive the equivalent normalized squared distance (ENSD) and compare it with the ENSD of the noncoherent receiver with perfect CSI. Simulation results are also provided to verify the theoretical performance analysis.

  • A straightforward method for optimal determining of a high frequency inductor's parasitic capacitance is presented. The proposed estimation method is based on measuring the inductor's impedance samples over a limited frequency range bordering on the resonance point considering k-dB deviation from the maximum impedance. An optimized solution to k could be obtained by minimizing the root mean squared error between the measured and the estimated impedance values. The model used to provide the estimations is a parallel RLC circuit valid at resonance frequency which will be transferred to the real model considering the mentioned interval of frequencies. A straightforward algorithm is suggested and programmed using MATLAB which does not require a wide knowledge of design parameters and could be implemented using a spectrum analyzer. The inputs are the measured impedance samples as a function of frequency along with the diameter of the conductors. The suggested algorithm practically provides the estimated parameters of a real inductance model at different frequencies, with or without design information. The suggested work is different from designing a high frequency inductor; it is rather concentration of determining the parameters of an available real inductor that could be easily done by a recipe provided to a technician.

  • In this paper, the Viterbi decoder containing new branch metrics of the squared Euclidean distance with multiple order phase differences is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate (BER) in the differential detection of the trellis-coded MDPSK-DFDM. The proposed Viterbi decoder is conceptually same as the sliding multiple phase differential detection method that uses the branch metric with multiple phase differences. Also, we describe the Viterbi algorithm in order to use this branch metrics. Our study shows that such a Viterbi decoder improves BER peformance without sacrificing bandwidth and power efficiency. • In this paper, in order to apply the $\pi/4$ shift QPSK to TCM, we propose the $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK modulation technique and the trellis-coded $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK performing signal set expansion and partition by phase difference. In addition, the Viterbi decoder with branch metrics of the squared Euclidean distance of the first phase difference as well as the Lth phase different is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate(BER) performance in differential detection of the trellis-coded $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK. The proposed Viterbi decoder is conceptually the same as the sliding multiple detection by using the branch metric with first and Lth order phase difference. We investigate the performance of the uncoded $\pi/4$ shift QPSK and the trellis-coded $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK with or without the Lth phase difference metric in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) using the Monte Carlo simulation. The study shows that the $\pi/4$ shift QPSK with the Trellis-code i.e. the trellis-coded $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK is an attractive scheme for power and bandlimited systems and especially, the Viterbi decoder with first and Lth phase difference metrics improves BER performance. Also, the nest proposed algorithm can be used in the TC $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK as well as TCMDPSK.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in-plane bending moment for T-joints made of cold-formed square hollow steel sections. In the previous studies, the T-joint was shown not to have an obvious peak load, and the failure mode was the main chord flange failure at the branch-width-to-chord-width ratio ($\beta$) of below 0.71. Based on the experimental results, including the tests conducted by Zhao, the deformation limit of 1% B was proposed for ${16.7{\leq}2{\gamma}(=B/T){\leq}33}$ and ${0.34{\leq}{\beta}(=b_{1}/B){\leq}0.71}$. Then, the ultimate in-plane bending strength was shown to be Mu=1.5${\cdot}$M1% B. The existing strength formulae for the original T-joint were investigated and were determined to be the main chord flange failure for the branch-squared T-joint. The bending strength formulae of CIDECT and other researchers were compared with the test results. Finally, a reasonably good agreement with Zhao's formula was found. Therefore, the design guidelines were presented based on Zhao's strength formula for T-joints.

  • Background: In the maxillofacial region, giant cell granulomas occur in 2 clinical forms, central and peripheral. Despite histopathological similarity between these 2 forms totally different clinical behaviors have been reported. The present study was undertaken to compare mast cell and vascular concentrations in these pathologic lesions. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 20 pathological samples of central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) and 20 samples of peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) were selected and examined through toluidine blue staining for mast cell assessment and immunohistochemical staining by VEGEF antibody for comparing the number of mast cells. T-test, chi-squared test and backward multivariate linear regression were used for statistical analysis using SPSS 20. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Results: This study showed significantly greater VEGF expression and mast cell concentrations in CGCG compared to PGCG cases. Also there was a significant correlation between VEGF expression and the concentration of mast cells. No relation was found between age, sex and site of the lesion and concentration of mast cells or VEGF expression. Conclusions: It is feasible that higher concentrations of mast cells in CGCG versus PGCG samples might lead to more aggressive clinical behavior via vascular proliferation and angiogenesis. However, other biologic mechanisms should be considered in this situation.
