  • All copepodid stages and free-swimming adults of Ergasilus hypomesi Yamaguti collected from plankton samples from a brackish lake in Korea are described. The antennule remains a four-segmented appendage until copepodid V. The antenna of copepodid I carries a vestigial exopod. Sexual dimorphism first appears at copepodid IVwhose males bear primodial maxillipeds. Leg 5 also is sexually dimorphic from copepodid IV onwards, with its free segment bearing three setae in the female and two setae in the male. Morphological features of some appendages appearing during copepodid development are discussed. It is noticed that the early copepodids of the Ergasilidae show the characteristic setation on the biramous legs and proximal segments of the antennule.

  • For investigation of the Korean ciliate fauna, two oxytrichid ciliates, Histriculus histrio (Muller, 1773) and Sterkiella thompsoni Foissner, 1996, were collected from freshwater and brackish waters in South Korea, respectively. These two ciliates are reported for the first time in Korea. Descriptions were based on observations of live and silver stained specimens. Diagnoses of these species are as follows. Histriculus histrio: body is approximately $190{\times}85\;{\mu}m$ in size, almost ellipsoidal in shape, posterior part rather thin and very translucent. Cortical granules are absent. Both marginal rows are almost confluent at the posterior end. Six dorsal kineties are present. Sterkiella thompsoni: body is approximately $140{\times}50\;{\mu}m$ in size. Body margins are usually in parallel. Cortical granules are absent. Invariably, four dorsal kineties are present. Two caudal cirri are located on the dorsal surface. Three ellipsoidal macronuclear nodules are present.

  • A 33-year-old Korean man visited a medical clinic with complaints of throat discomfort and pain for one week. The symptoms occurred one day after eating raw brackish water fish, perch. Endoscopy revealed a fluke, about 5 mm in length, attaching to and peristaltically moving on the surface of the mucosa at the arytenoid region of the larynx. Microscopically, the testes were triangular, tandem, and separated by the uterus. The ovary and cirrus pouch were placed apart from median line between testes. Numerous blood cells were observed in the ceca. The worm was identified to be Clinostomum complanatum. This is the second human case of clinostomiasis in Korea.

  • Four harpacticoid species belonging to the family Tachidiidae are reported from the coastal waters and salt marshes in South Korea: Tachidius discipes Giesbrecht, 1881, Neotachidius parvus Huys, Ohtsuka, Conroy-Dalton and Kikuchi, 2005, Microarthridion litospinatus Shen and Tai, 1973 and Geeopsis incisipes (Klie, 1913). The latter two species and genera are new to Korean fauna. The previous record of T. discipes reported by Song and Chang (1995) from Korea is affirmed by the finding of male specimens. Microarthridion litospinatus is first known outside the type locality, and redescribed herein in detail. A key to the five species and four genera of the family Tachidiidae hitherto known from South Korea is presented.

  • Huge numbers of non-biting midges emerged from brackish water which were made at the harbor construction field in Jinhae City, Kyongsangnam-do, Korea in late summer in 2005, and caused a serious nuisance to villagers. The midges were collected and identified as Chironomus salinarius (Kieffer, 1921). Although this species was recorded in Korea for the first time in 1998, the morphological descriptions were so brief and simple. A full redescription is made with detailed illustrations for ecological and control workers of this nuisance midge.

  • The palaemonid shrimp Exopazaemon modestus inhabits the freshwater of the Indo-West Pacific, Siberia, Manchuira, Korea, China, Taiwan (Holthuis, 1980) and is abundant in the fresh water areas of southwest of Korea. Palaemonid shrimps are adapted to a variety of habitats in freshwater, brackish and marine environments. They play important role in the ecosystem of fresh, brackish and marine waters, acting as predators feeding on algae, detritus, crustaceans and meiofauna (Bell and Coull, 1978) and in turn, as preys for fishes and other predators (Anderson, 1985). • A new laophontid copepod species, Apolethon articulatus n. sp., is described from the estuaries and salt marshes in South Korea. Apolethon articulatus is similar to the three congeneric species currently known in sharing the character combination of the elongate first endopodal segment of leg 1 with inner seta and the expansion of second endopodal segments of legs 2-4 with decrease in the number of setae on them. However, A. articulatus differs from them by the separate exopod of female leg 5 and the armature of mandibular palp with 6 setae. Description and taxonomic accounts of the new species are presented herein with detailed illustrations and SEM micrographs. As the true identity of the rarely known genus has not been clarified yet, a revised generic diagnosis is provided with a key to the species hitherto known in the genus.

  • The rotifers collected from a brackish water zone as well as various terrestrial habitats such as mosses, ichens, and leaf litter at seven different locations in Korea were investigated. Eight species/subspecies belonging to five genera in five families of monogonont and bdelloid rotifers new to Korea were identified: Encentrum incisum, Encentrum uncinatum, Cephalodella innesi, Adineta gracilis, Macrotrachella timida timida, Macrotrachella timida inquies, Habrotrocha pavida and Habrotrocha scabropyga. Five bdelloids are new to Asia as well. Notably, these eight Korean new records included three rare species. H. scabropyga is recorded outside its type locality for the first time. For M. timida timida, this study is the third record after its description. In addition, E. incisum has been reported only from Austria, Germany and Russia before the present study.

  • Phytoplanktons were collected from various environments including small marshes, small ponds, reservoirs and brackish water from March 2017 to November 2017. In this study, five species of family Scenedesmaceae were newly recorded in Korea. The genus Desmodesmus was newly reported in Korea. The newly recorded species are Scenedesmus nanus, S. praetervisus, Desmodesmus costato-granulatus, D. lunatus and D. spinulatus. S. nanus and S. praetervisus are known to occur in freshwater, but they were found in the brackish water in this study.
