  • Pediatric mesenteric panniculitis is an extremely rare disease of unknown etiology characterized by chronic inflammation, fat necrosis, and fibrosis in the mesenteric adipose tissue. A previously healthy 13-year-old boy was admitted because of right upper abdominal pain. An abdominal computed tomography scan revealed increased attenuation and enhancement in the left upper abdominal omental fat and anterior peritoneal wall thickening. A laparoscopic biopsy showed mesenteric panniculitis with chronic inflammation, adiponecrosis, and septal fibrosis. Serological tests for autoimmune diseases, nested polymerase chain reaction for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and special immunohistochemical stains for malignancy were all negative. Symptomatic improvement and improved abnormal findings were achieved after an 8-month treatment with prednisolone according to a follow-up abdominal computed tomography scan. Here, we report a case of pediatric mesenteric panniculitis treated with prednisolone.

  • A boy who was eight years old visited the Dept. of Oriental Medical Ophthamology & Otolaryngology & Dermatology Hospital, Dongeui University with allergic purpura. He was suffering from the purpuric rash occurring on the lower extremities and the edema of leg. We treated a patient with only Oriental Medicine(a internal use of the herbal medicine, Dangguisusangamibang and a acupuncture). After four days or so, the symptom of the skin disease was recovered remarkably. The second case, a different boy who was ten years old visited the same hospital with allergic purpura. He was suffering from the purpuric rash occurring on the lower extremities, too. We also treated a patient with only Oriental Medicine(internal use of the herbal medicine, Dangguisusangamibang and a acupuncture). After one weeks or so, the symptom of the skin disease was improved remarkably, we think that these are good cases to treat with Oriental Medicine, Dangguisusangamibang. We suggest that the Oriental Herb medicine, Dangguisusangamibang have an effect with allergic purpura which means Podoyug in Oriental medicine.

  • For children with most outdoor activities, wearing appropriate shoes is important to their growth and health. The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics regarding children's feet and to provide beneficial information for an appropriate sizing system of children's shoes. The data of the study were 3D measurements of feet from school boys aged 7-12 of the 6th Anthropometry of Size Korea. This study revealed that the two factors related to the size and height of the feet represent the characteristics of children's feet, unlike adults. As a result of applying the data of this study to the current KS sizing system of the children's shoes, only the foot lengths were within the sizing system. Consequently, the current sizing system requires revisions and supplements to the foot-width and foot-circumference sections.

The subjects for this study were children’s mothers of 2nd grade selected from elementary schools in Busan. Han, Sae-Young’s questionnaires(1996) on child’s temperament and Kim, Min-Kyung’s questionnaires(1998) on child’s behavior problem were used. Statistical techniques such as t-test, Pearson’s correlation, multiple regression, canonical were used. The results were as follows : (1) According to sex, there were no significant differences in child’s temperament. But there were significant differences in child’s behavior problem. The boys got higher scores than girls in hyperactive/distractive behavior and in hostile/aggressive behavior. (2) There were significant correlations between child’s emotionality and hyperactive/distractive behavior, between child’s emotionality and anxious/fearful behavior, between child’s emotionality and hostile/ aggressive behavior, and between child’s activity and hyperactive/distractive behavior. (3) The predicted variables for child’s hyperactive/distractive behavior were emotionality and activity. The predicted variable for chid’s anxious/fearful behavior and hostile/aggressive behavior was emotionality. (4) Among three dimensions of boy’s temperament, the effective variable was emotionality. And among three dimensions of boy’s behavior problem were anxious/fearful behavior and hostile/aggressive behavior. Among three dimensions of girl’s temperament, the effective variable was emotionality. And among three dimensions of girl’s problem behavior was anxious/fearful behavior. • Colorectal cancer is extremely rare in children. Unlike adult colorectal cancer, the overall prognosis of colorectal cancer in children is poor. Delayed diagnosis, advanced stages of the disease at presentation, and mucinous type of histology are the major determinants of poor outcome in childhood. A 13-year-old boy with abdominal pain visited our hospital. Physical examination andabdominal ultrasonography identified acute appendicitis with perforation. He underwent appendectomy and then the pathologic findings revealed mucinous adenocarcinoma. The cancer was located at the transverse colon and had metastases on peritoneal wall at $2^{nd}$ laparotomy. Extended right hemicolectomy was performed. He underwent palliative chemotherapy. After 4 months later, hepatic metastasis and aggravated peritoneal seedings developed. He died of renal failure and pneumonia 13 months after operation. We need to have a high index of suspicion for the possibility of a malignant colorectal tumor in any childhood case with nonspecific signs and symptoms.

  • This study investigated the effects of mothers' perceived social support, stress, and children's temperament on parenting self-efficacy of boy's and girl's mothers among 416 Korean mothers living in Seoul, Korea. Results showed that mothers' parenting self-efficacy of boys and girls were positively related to mothers' perceived social support and children's temperament. On the other hand, parenting self-efficacy of both boys' and girls' mothers were negatively related to mothers' stress. Multiple regression indicated that mothers' perceived social support and children's temperament were the significant predictors for mothers' parenting self-efficacy of boys and girls. Husbands' support, support from social network, approach-withdrawal, and activity level-general were the significant predictors for mothers' parenting self-efficacy of boys. Husbands' support, support from social network, conflict with their children, transition of husband's job, difficulty of finance and business were the significant predictors for mothers' parenting self-efficacy of girls. Husbands' support was the strongest predicator of mothers' parenting self-efficacy of boys and girls.

  • The aimed of the study was to investigate the referral rate of hearing screening for girls and boys senior high school in Gyeongsan and to consider the need for hearing screening. 359-girl and 205-boy were participated. Hearing screening was conducted tympanogram, automated otoacoustic emission(AOAE). Final referral rate was observed 9 girl (2.5%) and 19 boy (9.268%), respectively. There was no differences between boys and girls in tympanogram and AOAE. In conclusion, hearing screening for senior high school students needs to conduct tympanometry in order to screen hearing loss which is difficult to check through pure tone screening regardless of development of the Eustachian tube, and we need to make an effort to lower the false positive results.

  • This study explored the sandplay therapy case of a 5th grade boy who was living in a small income fatherless family from the viewpoints of both sandplay theory and related literatures. The goal of the therapy was to lessen his difficulties under the free and protected space of sandplay therapy. This study comprised 59 sessions of sandplay therapy. The subject exhibited his situations in the initial parts of therapy(1~5, the preparation for war against enemies) by putting miniatures related to Egypt and by placing Indians who were keeping the house from enemies. In the intermediate sessions(6~47, holding a ceremony), he repeated burning rituals, played finding treasures, and exhibited both struggle and construction. In the final parts(48~59, integration), he showed integration by expressing the adaptation to the collective. This study indicated the effectiveness of sandplay therapy, because his maladjustments in both school and home were reduced.
