  • Some of the underground structures such as subway tunnels are constructed by open cut method, in which the ground is excavated, a structure installed, and after that the excavated space is backfilled. In this case, because of their narrow and constrained boundary conditions, the earth pressure induced by self-weight of the backfilled soil acting on the underground structures is different from that of the classical theory. The vertical and horizontal earth pressures acting on upper slab and side wall of the underground structures constructed by open cut method are affected by the backfill geometry. The laboratory model tests were performed in the conditions of a variety of the shapes of backfill geometry and wall friction. And their results were compared with those from theories. As a result, it was observed that the distribution of the earth pressure acting on the underground structure is affected by the shapes of backfill geometry, the width of backfill, the angle of excavation and the wall friction.

  • Recent development of 3D scanner and software is regarded as a promising method of acquiring replicas from human body indirectly. It would be very helpful if we could predict the characteristics of 2D pattern from the simple parameters related to 3D shape for ordinary user. Therefore, in this study, investigation of 2D pattern of waist/abdominal area from the 3D geometrical model was conducted for the pattern development of waist nipper. To create body models and develop the surface of them, one ortho commonly used CAD/CAM program, IDEAS(UGS-plm solutions, USA) was used. As for the size of the models, the width, thickness, and circumference ranges of adult women's torso reported in National Anthropometric Survey of Korea (1997) were used as a standard model. Seven size variations were made by changing the width of the waist only, from 19 cm to 40 cm. Therefore, simulated body models include not only the normal body but also obese body who has wider waist and abdomen width than hip width. As results, it was found that the curvature of the unfolded 2D pattern around the abdominal area decreases as the waist width increases. As the width of the waist increases more and more, so that the comparative ratios around the torso becomes in abnormal ranges, there appears inflection points and the direction of curvature was changed. 2D Patterns obtained in this research were quantified by curvature, length of the curve and angle of deflection in the reference frame box for the convenience of the actual pattern making process. It was also possible to find that the shape of patterns of abnormal body resulted in a quite interesting change in the curves of 2D pattern, which could be applied to the custom made waist nipper for obese women.

  • The most typical capping method for concrete structures is a sulfur-mortar compound capping, provided it satisfied the standard criterion set forth by ASTM C 617, but this conventional bonded-type method has many problems. It exhibits relatively the smaller unreliable value of the strength of high-strength concrete due to the differences of elasticity and strength between the cylinder and the cap, and manifests poor serviceability such as dangerous working tasks or a waste of the working time. To prevent these problems, unbonded-type capping methods have taken the place of the conventional methods in recent years. One of the popular methods is the use of synthetic rubber like a neoprene pad. Serious problems still remain in this method, which include the consideration of its chemical characteristics in consideration of the selection, the safekeeping and the economy of the pads. Moreover, the synthetic rubber pads cannot be used in concrete cylinder with strength greater than 80 MPa according to ASTM C 1231-00. New 'sand-capping method' presented in this study, can be applicable to the compressive strength evaluation of the high strength concrete in the range of $70{\sim}100\;MPa$. This new method has better simplicity and reliability than those of existing 'sand-box', because usual materials such as standard sand and simply-devised apparatus are used for the capping system. The statistical analysis of the test results revealed that the new sand-capping method exhibited the smallest deviation and dispersion, attesting for its much better reliability than other methods specified in ASTM C 1231/1231M.

  • This paper propose a method to trace a moving object based on the information directly obtained from MPEG-2 compressed video stream without decoding process. In the proposed method, the motion flow is constructed from the motion vectors involved in compressed video and then we calculate the amount of pan, tilt, zoom associated with camera operations using generalized Hough transform. The local object motion can be extracted from the motion flow after the compensation with the parameters related to the global camera motion. The moving object is designated initially by a user via bounding box. After then automatic tracking is performed based on the mean-shift algorithm of the motion flows of the object. The proposed method can improve the computation speed because the information is directly obtained from the MPEG-2 compressed video, but the object boundary is limited by blocks rather than pixels.

  • In this paper the model tests have been conducted and the results are compared with those by the theoretical methods to study the behaviors of the piled raft. The size of model box is 2.2m${\times}$2m${\times}$2m. The raft is made of rigid steel plate and piles made of steel pipes. Generally the bearing capacity of group piles is designed with only the pile capacities, and the bearing capacity of raft is ignored. But the uncertainty of pile-raft-soil interaction leads to conservative design ignoring the bearing effects of raft. In the case of considering the bearing capacity of raft, the simple sum of bearing capacity of raft and that of each pile cannot be the bearing capacity of piled raft. Because the pile-raft-soil interaction affects the behavior of piled raft. Thus the effects of pile-raft-soil interaction are very important in the optimal design. In this paper, the behaviors of piled raft are studied through model tests of 2${\times}$2, 2${\times}$3, and 3${\times}$3 pile groups. The spacing between piles is changed in the model tests. And the behaviors of free standing and piled raft are also studied.

  • Purpose : (1) To analyse the effect of exposure time, ROI size and one impact factor in the image processing procedure on estimates of fractal dimension; and (2) to analyse the correlated relationship between the fractal dimension and the Cu-Eq value (bone density). Materials and Methods : The cylindric bone phantoms of 6 large and 5 small diameter having different bone densities respectively and human dry mandible segment with copper step wedge were radiographed at 1.0 and 1.2 sec esposure (70 kVp, 7 mA) using one occlusal film and digitized. Eleven rectangular ROIs from 11 cylindric bone phantoms and 4 rectan-gular ROIs from cortical, middle, periodontal regions, and socket of bone were selected. Gaussian blurred Image was subtracted from original image of each ROI and multiplied respectively by 1, 0.8, and 0.5, and then the image was made binary, eroded and dilated once, and skeletonized. The fractal dimension was calculated by means of a box counting method in the software ImageJ. Results : The fractal dimension was decreased gradually with continued bone density decrease showing strong correlations (bone phantom; r> 0.87, bone; r> 0.68) under 70 kVp 1.0 sec M = 0.8. Fractal dimensions showed the significant differerence (p < 0.05) between two different exposure times on the same small ROI of bone phantom. Fractal dimensions between two different sizes of ROI on bone phantom showed the significant differerence (p < 0.05) under 1.2 sec exposure, but did not show it (p > 0.05) under 1.0 sec exposure. Conclusions : Exposure time, ROI size, and modifying factor during subtracting could become impacting on the results of fractal dimension. Fractal analysis with thoroughly evaluated method considering the various impacting factors on the results could be useful in assessing the bone density in dental radiography.

  • According to the accident statistics published by the National Police Agency in 2006, it can be recognized that drivers' characteristics and driving behaviors are the most causational factors on the traffic accidents. At present, although many recording tools such as digital speedometer or black box are distributed in the market to meet social requests of decreasing traffic accidents and increasing safe driving behaviors, it is also true that it still lacks in obvious categories for dangerous driving types and then, the efficiency of the categories to be studied has been low. In this study, dangerous driving types are redefined. They are grouped into 7 classifications in the first level, and the seven classifications are regrouped into 16 in more detail. To verify the redefined dangerous driving types, a Data-logger is developed to receive and analyze the data that occur from the driving behaviors of the test vehicle. The developed Data-logger can be used to construct a real time warning system and safe driving management system with dangerous driving patterns based on acceleration, deceleration, Yaw rate, image data, etc.

  • Recently, as the expectation about the IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) service quality is rapidly increased by the development of the national high-speed internet and TPS (the Triple Play Service : data + image + audio) service Therefore, the enactment of the national quality standards about the IPTV service quality guaranteeing the real time video quality of a subscriber and the international standards are hastily needed. This paper built a test bed with the network domain and the subscriber set-top box domain including the headend area and commercial network characteristic in order to test in the environment which is similar to the characteristic of the service business network. And by using the constructed environment, the characteristics required for SLA(service Level Agreement) of the IPTV service are presented as the quality test according to the service environment change.

  • Cyclophosphamide(25, 50 or 100 mg/kg), orally administered to male Sprague-Dawley rats, caused a time- and dose-dependent thymic atrophy. In the light microscopic examination of the atrophic thymus, thymocytes with condensed or fragmented nucleus were multifocally observed in the cortical region, started to increase 8 hr after CPA treatment and reached to the maximal level at 16 hr, although such cells were not seen after 48 hr when the severe depletion of thymocytes were marked. In agarose gel electrophoresis to analyze the DNA changes, DNA extracted from atrophic thymus showed a oligonucleosomal laddering at the corresponding time to morphological changes. In an additional supportive experiment, thymocytes showing morphological changes, nuclear condensation or apoptotic body, exhibited a positive reaction to immunoperoxidase staining using in situ apoptosis detection kit. Separately, agarose gel electrophoresis of DNA from bone .marrow cells was performed to investigate the involvement of bone marrow cells in the process of thymocyte apoptosis. Although DNA laddering was slightly increased 2 and 4 hr after treatment, no clear correlation was inferred. Taken togather, it is concluded that thymocytes showing morphological changes in thymic atrophy induced by cyclophosphamide administration represent an apoptosis having biochemical nature of programmed cell death.

  • Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) has been accepted for supporting Component-Based Development (CBD). A component is a large-grained reuse unit consisting of several objects; however, an enterprise bean in EJB is a unit of atomic object and so multiple enterprise beans should be composed to support larger-grained reuse. Therefore, we need practical methods for designing and implementing components with EJB. In this paper, we propose instructions and techniques for designing CBD elements with EJB constructs. That is, we define methods for designing and implementing single and composite components, white- and black-box components, multiple interfaces, and variability mechanism in EJB platform. We evaluate the proposed method by performing a case study and comparing the characteristics of CBD components with the method. Consequently, the method is supposed to improve reusability, applicability, portability of components in EJB platform.
