Gravity characteristics are investigated in the vicinity of the DASAN scientific station, located at the Svalbard Archipelago, the Arctic using ArcGP data. Boundary effects of free-air gravity anomalies, which appeared generally at the continental margin, are erased after Bouguer correction was applied. Complete Bouguer anomalies produced after terrain correction by GrOPO30 show that gravity anomalies increase from continent to marine. This phenomena seem to be related to the rise of Moho discontinuity. The cut-off frequency of 0.16 was decided after power spectrum analysis and the gravity anomalies were divided into two parts. Residual anomalies in high frequency part show that characteristics of high values along the faults and of low values related to thick sediments in the continent. Characteristic is low values from basement subsidence of continental slope or thick sediments in the marine. The undulation of Moho discontinuity from 3-D inversion modeling show typical characteristics of continental margin that become higher from Svalbard archipelago to Knipovich ridge bordering Eurasian plate.
Roll drafting, a mechanical operation attenuating fiber bundles to an appropriate thickness, is an important operation unit for manufacturing staple yams. It influences not only the linear density regularity of the slivers or staple yams that are produced, but also the quality of the textile product and the efficiency of the thereafter processes. In this research, the dynamic states of the fiber bundle in the roll drafting zone were analyzed by simulation, based on the mathematical model that describes the dynamic behavior of the flowing bundle. The state variables are the linear density and velocity of the fiber bundles and we simulated the dynamics states of the bundle flow, e.g., the profiles of the linear density and velocity in the draft zone for various values of the model parameters and boundary conditions, including the initial conditions to obtain their influence on the dynamic state. Results showed that the mean velocity profile of the fiber bundle was strongly influenced by draft ratio and process speed, while the input sliver linear density has hardly affected the process dynamics. Velocity variance of individual fibers that could be supposed to be a disturbing factor in drafting was also influenced by the process speed. But the major disturbance occurred due to the velocity slope discontinuity at the front roll, which was strongly influenced by the process speed. Thickness of input sliver didn't play any important role in the process dynamics.

An expanded scheme of a direct numerical solution method for solving the Navier-Stokes equation considering the modified boundary conditions for gas lubrication with ultra low clearance at high .LAMBDA. region is presented. Many examples are calculated by this scheme and their results are compared to the previous solutions using P$^{2}$H$^{[-992]}$ . This scheme has the advantages of fast calculation time and stable convergence in high .LAMBDA. region, and gives very good results in the case of fluid film thickness discontinuity.

Numerical modeling of problems having infinite and semi-infinite boundaries is studied using a coupled method of distinct elements and boundary elements. The regions which are restricted on stress concentration area of loading points, excavation surface, and geometric discontinuity in the underground structures, are modeled using distinct elements, while the infinite and semi-infinite regions are modeled using linear boundary elements. Linear boundary elements for infinite and semi-infinite region are respectively composed using the Kelvin's and the Melan's solution, respectively. For the completeness, the boundary element method, the distinct element, and the coupled method of distinct elements and boundary elements are studied independently. The coupled method is verified and is applied to underground structures of infinite and semi-infinite regions. Through the comparison of the results, it is concluded that the coupled analysis may be used for discontinuous underground structures in the effective manner.
The characteristics of heat conduction for the heat source boundary like an arch shape cavern are different from those for the semi-infinite or circular boundary which can be driven theoretically. A new form of transient heat conduction equation in rock mass around the arch shape cavern is evaluated with analyzing the pattern of the rock temperature distribution measured at the cold storage pilot plant. The new equation, which is driven by adopting a shape function, $SF=\sqrt{logx_0/log(x_0+x)}$ to the solution for a semi-infinite boundary, has the semi-radial form of temperature variation with distance. And, thermal properties of rock mass are estimated by comparing the rock temperature distributions by this equation with those by measurement. Thermal conductivity and specific heat of rock mass are estimated as giving the difference of 20~25% compared to those of laboratory scale. This difference seems to be caused by discontinuity like joint and water content in rock mass.

In this paper, an improved continuous integral variable structure systems(ICIVSS) with the prescribed control performance is designed for simple regulation controls of uncertain general linear systems. An integral sliding surface with an integral state having a special initial condition is adopted for removing the reaching phase and predetermining the ideal sliding trajectory from a given initial state to the origin in the state space. The ideal sliding dynamics of the integral sliding surface is analytically obtained and the solution of the ideal sliding dynamics can predetermine the ideal sliding trajectory(integral sliding surface) from the given initial state to the origin. Provided that the value of the integral sliding surface is bounded by certain value by means of the continuous input, the norm of the state error to the ideal sliding trajectory is analyzed and obtained in Theorem 1. A corresponding discontinuous control input with the exponential stability is proposed to generate the perfect sliding mode on the every point of the pre-selected sliding surface. For practical applications, the discontinuity of the VSS control input is approximated to be continuous based on the proposed modified fixed boundary layer method. The bounded stability by the continuous input is investigated in Theorem 3. With combining the results of Theorem 1 and Theorem 3, as the prescribed control performance, the pre specification on the error to the ideal sliding trajectory is possible by means of the boundary layer continuous input with the integral sliding surface. The suggested algorithm with the continuous input can provide the effective method to increase the control accuracy within the boundary layer by means of the increase of the $G_1$ gain. Through an illustrative design example and simulation study, the usefulness of the main results is verified.

The purpose ol this study Is to suggest a proper analysis model that can evaluate seismic stability for local rock foundation of nuclear power plant. Sliding Analysis, Pseudo-static Analysis and Dynamic Analysis methods are used for analysing NPP rock foundation with the conditions like acting directions of input earthquake, boundary conditions, width and depth of analysing model, and modeling methods of weakness fault zones. As the results of study, Pseudo-static Analysis for lateral roller and dynamic analysis for transfer boundary condition showed good results, and analysing ranges of width and depth were 5 times of structure width and over 2 times ol structure depth.

Up to now, most studies are on interface crack problems in isotropic-isotropic dissimilar materials, but it seems to be not so much on anisotropic dissimlar materials. In this study, the stress intensity factors for an interface crack in anisotropic dissimilar materials are analysed using author's proposed extrapolation method by BEM and we have done a parametric study about material properties or shapes of crack affecting to the stress intensity factors. However, as there are not other's comparable numerical results on these anisotropic dissimilar materials to the best of author's knowledge, the reliability of the present results was proved by following two methods. The first is considering the asymptotic characteristic about stress intensity factors for an interface crack in anisotropic materials when the ansiotropic material approachs to the isotropic material. The second is considering the discontinuity of stress intensity factors between of a crack in an identical homogeneous anisotropic material and an interface crack in anisotropic dissimilar materials.
A family of variational principles governing the dynamics of laminated plate has been derived using a variationally consistent shear deformable discrete laminated plate theory with particular reference to finite element procedures. The theoretical basis for the derivation is Sandhu's generalized procedure for the variational formulation of linear coupled boundary value problem. As the bilinear mapping to write the operator matrix of the field equations in self-adjoint form, convolution product was employed. Boundary conditions, initial conditions and probable internal discontinuity were explicitly included in the governing functionals. Some interesting extensions and specializations of the general variational principle were presented, which can provide many different finite element formulations for the problem.

This paper presents an analytical prediction of the fatigue damage of reinforced concrete bridge columns subjected to cyclic load. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected, local discontinuity in deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. The proposed numerical method for fatigue damage of reinforced concrete bridge columns subjected to cyclic load is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.
