  • Extraction of the coastal boundary is important because the boundary serves as a reference in the demarcation of maritime zones such as territorial sea, contiguous zone, and exclusive economic zone. Accurate nautical charts also depend on well established, accurate, consistent, and current coastline delineation. However, to identify the precise location of the coastal boundary is a difficult task due to tidal and wave motions. This paper presents an efficient way to extract coastlines by applying digital image processing techniques to Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Over the past few years, satellite-based SAR and high resolution airborne SAR images have become available, and SAR has been evaluated as a new mapping technology. Using remotely sensed data gives benefits in several aspects, especially SAR is largely unaffected by weather constraints, is operational at night time over a large area, and provides high contrast between water and land areas. Various image processing techniques including region growing, texture-based image segmentation, local entropy method, and refinement with image pyramid were implemented to extract the coastline in this study. Finally, the results were compared with existing coastline data derived from aerial photographs.

  • A finite element method is developed for calculating the temperature and enthalpy distribution and accordingly the solid, liquid and mushy zone in a three-dimensional body subjected to any heat boundary conditions. The method concurrently consider both temperature and enthalpy for consideration of the latent heat effect, differently from other methods of using a special energy balance equation for solving a mushy zone. The developed brick element has eight nodes with one degree of freedom at each node. The numerical method and procedure are verified using the results of one and two dimensional analytic solutions and by other researchers. It is shown that the present method presents a consistent and stable results in either abrupt or ranged phase change problems. Moreover, the numerical results by the present method are hardly effected by the calculation time steps which otherwise are difficult to determine in most phase change problems. Finally, as a three-dimensional application, a T-shaped body of a phase change is presented and the temperature and enthalpy variation along the time are solved.

  • The water level fluctuation (WLF) method is a conventional method for quantifying groundwater recharge by multiplying the specific yield to the water level rise. A 2-D unconfined flow model with a time series of the recharge rate is developed. It is used for elucidating the errors of the WLF method which is implicitly based on the tank model where the horizontal flow in the saturated zone is ignored. Simulations show that the recharge estimated by the WLF method is underestimated for the observation well near the discharge boundary. This is due to the fact that the hydraulic stress resulting from the recharge is rapidly dissipating by the horizontal flow near the discharge boundary Simulations also reveal that the recharge was significantly underestimated with increase in the hydraulic conductivity and the recharge duration, and decrease in the specific yield.

  • The scattering property of TMz illuminated a elliptic dielectric cylinders with arbitrary cross section are analyzed by the boundary element techniques. The boundary element equations are for- mulated via Maxwell's equations, weighted residual of Green's theorem, and the boundary conditions. The unknown surface fields on the boundaries are then calculated by the boundary element integral equations. Once the surface fields are found, the scattered fields in far-zone and scattering widths (SW) are readily determined. To show the validity and usefulness of this formulation, computations are compared with those obtained using analytical method and one layer circular cylinder. As exten- sion to arbitrary cross-sectioned cylinders, plane wave scattering from a elliptic dielectric cylinders are numerically analyzed. A general computer program has been developed using the quadratic ele- ments(Higher order borndary elements) and the Gaussian quadrature.

  • In this paper, a method for determining the boundary conditions which are derived from the random obstacles on the curves was presented. An algorism using this method is also developed. This determination method can be used for a good engineering tool in optimal curve design and an Radius-transition curve length(R-$L_t$) combination within the permissible zone can be improved without any increased costs.

  • Geological and electrical resistivity surveys along the survey line of about 3 km between Kyungsangbukdo Youngilgun Hodong and Gwangmyungdong using by dipole-dipole electrode array method were carried out to examine the boundary and structural relationship between Tertiary Pohang and Janggi basins. Electrical resistivity data were interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively by means of pseudosection of apparent electrical resitivity distribution and finite difference method for two dimensional geologic structure model. The nearly vertical fault zone with low electrical resistivity value of 1-5 Ohm-m and widths of about 200m at the surface and 400 m at depth exists around 1.2 km west of national road between Ocheoneup and Yangbukmyun. Mudrocks, sandstones and tuffaceous rocks are widely distributed with electrical resistivity values of 6-77 Ohm-m. Especially, tuffaceous rocks with relatively high electrical resistivity value are predominant at eastern side of fault zone. Consequently, it is known that Pohang and Janggi basins are in fault contact.

  • In designing the boundary confinement of shear walls, the current design provisions and recommendations are empirical and prescriptive; they specify a certain confinement length and details, regardless of the actual requirement of ductility Therefore, they are inappropriate to the performance based-design. The purpose of the present study is to develop a ductility design method that Is applicable to the performance based-design of shear wall. For the purpose, experimental studies were performed to investigate variations in the ductility of shear walls with the length of the boundary confinement. Five specimens modeling the compressive zone of cross sections with different confinement area were tested against eccentric vertical load. Through the experimental studies, strength, ductility, and failure mode of the compression zone were investigated. In addition, nonlinear numerical analyses for the overall cross-sections of shear wall were performed to investigate variations of the stress and strain profiles with the length of compression zone. On the basis of the experimental and numerical studies, a ductility design method for shear wall was developed. By using the proposed design method, for a given ductility demand, the area of lateral confinement and corresponding reinforcement ratio can be precisely determined so that the ductile behavior and economical design are assured.

  • Friction welding has may merits such as energy efficiency, simple processing, etc. but it is difficult to obtain good welding at the welded interfaces and heat affected zone. It is discovered that stress singularity exists at the interferes and heat affected zone. The computer program based on boundary element method is utilized in this study. A mathematical model is implemented based on results from several experiments performed at and around the welded interfaces and heat affected zone of disimilar metals under static and dynamic loadings. This stay is to investigate the characteristics of the deformation and fracture behavior around interfaces for friction welded materials under static tensile load. Also, the stress distribution at the tip of crack is analyzed by using BU based on Kelvin's solution of 2-dimensional binding zone. The results of BEM are identical with those in case of considering interfaces of both heat affected zone. Also, stress singularity at the tip of interfaces appears when the elastic modulus ratio is 1.07.

  • The Imgye area, in the NE Taebaegsan Region, consists of Precambrian granites and schist complex at the base and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and amphibolite at cover. The granites in the area were previously thought to be Paleozoic in age, but recent geochronological data yields isotopic age ranging from $1837{\pm}82Ma$ to $2108{\pm}82Ma$ by Rb-Sr whole rock method. Therefore, basement-cover relations in the area should be reexamined. During the study, mylonite zone recognized along the contact boundary between Precambrian granites and Cambrian Jangsan Quartzite Formation. Mylonite zone has 150 - 250 m in width. Mylonitic rocks can divide into two groups; quartz mylonite derived from Jangsan Formation and mylonitic granites from Precambrian granites. Intensity of mylonitic foliation decreased toward the north. Amphibolite occurs as an intrusive sills within mylonite zone. Mineral fabrics and small scale shear zones are commonly seen in amphibolite. It indicates that intrusive age of amphibolite is synchronous to the formation of mylonite zone. Mylonite zone was reactivated as ductile thrust faults and forms the hinterland dipping imbricate zone during the Cretaceous Bulkuksa Orogeny. The near parallelism of mineral stretching lineation and long axis of strain ellipes indicates that the area is affected by a homogeneous pure shear flattening together with the variable components of simple shear.

  • Purpose: The aim of the study is to provide information about selecting school sites for new schools in congested urban areas and to propose a method to manage harmful environments around primary and secondary schools. Method: Four schools were selected around Gilum New Town and Ilsan City. The problems were identified by counting the businesses classified as harmful and prohibited in a school zone through surveying, collecting reports from relevant sources, and asking questions of authorities in school districts. Results: It was found that many harmful businesses prohibited by the Law of School Health were present in the safe zone of schools in both Ilsan city and Gilum New Town. The school site of Bohyun Elementary School was classified as poor because there was a steep ascent at the entrance and the school was surrounded by a dangerous, steep boundary. We suggested that an education and environment assessment system by completed before the school site was selected. Conclusion: There is a urgent need to improve the approval and permission process of harmful businesses as well as regulatory standards of school site selection in the light of the shortage of land.
