Wind tunnel investigation on flutter and buffeting of a three-tower suspension bridge

  • The Maanshan Bridge over Yangtze River in China is a new long-span suspension bridge with double main spans of $2{\times}1080m$ and a closed streamline cross-section of single box deck. The flutter and buffeting performances were investigated via wind tunnel tests of a full bridge aeroelastic model at a geometric scale of 1:211. The tests were conducted in both smooth wind and simulated boundary layer wind fields. Emphasis is placed on studying the interference effect of adjacent span via installing a wind deflector and a wind separating board to shelter one span of the bridge model from incoming flow. Issues related to effects of mid-tower stiffness and deck supporting conditions are also discussed. The testing results show that flutter critical wind velocities in smooth flow, with a wind deflector, are remarkably lower than those without. In turbulent wind, torsional and vertical standard deviations for the deck responses at midspan in testing cases without wind deflector are generally less than those at the midspan exposed to wind in testing cases with wind deflector, respectively. When double main spans are exposed to turbulent wind, the existence of either span is a mass damper to the other. Furthermore, both effects of mid-tower stiffness and deck supporting conditions at the middle tower on the flutter and buffeting performances of the Maanshan Bridge are unremarkable.

Experimental and Computational Investigation of Wind Flow Field on a Span Roof Structure

  • Unconventional structures are getting more popular in recent days. Large-span roofs are used for many structures, such as airports, stadiums, and conventional halls. Identifying the pressure distribution and wind load acting on those structures is essential. This paper offers a collaborative study of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel tests for assessing wind pressure distribution for a building with a combined slender curved roof. The hybrid turbulence model, Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES), simulates the open terrain turbulent flow field. The wind-induced local pressure coefficients on complex roof structures and the turbulent flow field around the structure were thus calculated based upon open terrain wind flow simulated with the FLUENT software. Local pressure measurements were investigated in a boundary layer wind tunnel simultaneous to the simulation to determine the pressure coefficient distributions. The results predicted by CFD were found to be consistent with the wind tunnel test results. The comparative study validated that the recommended IDDES model and the vortex method associated with CFD simulation are suitable tools for structural engineers to evaluate wind effects on long-span complex roofs and plan irregular buildings during the design stage.

아파트 건축물 군(群)에 의한 건축물 외장재의 풍압분포 (Distribution of Wind Pressure on Claddings of Apartment Buildings Affected by Neighboring Buildings)

  • 이 논문은 풍동실험 결과를 토대로 고층아파트 건축물의 풍압분포에 대한 내용을 다루고 있다. 태풍에 의해 창유리 파손을 입은 아파트 단지의 풍압모형을 제작하여 각 건축물의 상호간섭효과를 조사하였다. 풍동실험은 풍압모형을 이용하여 대형경계 층풍동에서 수행하였다. 간섭하는 주변건물의 여부에 따른 실험결과를 비교하고 검토하였다. 주변건물이 없어서 바람을 직접 맞을 때에는 105동, 106동은 주로 정압이 작용하였지만, 주변건물이 둘러싸고 있을 때의 105동, 106동은 큰 부압이 작용하는 것을 관찰할 수 있었다. 따라서 고층아파트 외장재 설계시 외장재의 안전성 확보를 위해서는 풍동실험을 수행하여 바람에 의해 야기되는 상호간섭효과를 고려하는 것이 가장 적합한 방법이라 할 수 있다.

풍하중에 의한 건물내부 압력의 동적변화에 관한 연구 (Wind Tunnel Investigation of Fluctuating Pressure Inside Building)

  • 본 연구는 모형건물의 풍동실험을 통하여 건물내부에 작용하는 풍하중의 동적변화를 조사연구하였다. 실험에 사용된 모형건물은 건물외부에 작용하는 풍하중이 건물내부에 전달될 수 있는 개구부가 설치된 직육면체 형태의 구조물인데 실험시 개구부의 면적과 방향을 변화하고 정상류와 난류 상태의 풍하중을 사용하였다. 주어진 실험 조건하에서 건물내부 압력의 진동주파수를 알 수 있는 power spectrum과 내부압력의 동적변화량을 알 수 있는 RMS를 측정하여 분석하였는데 분석된 실험결과는 비교적 최근에 제안된 이론과 일치하였다.

  • This study aims at verifying characteristics of torsional fluctuating moment coefficient and power spectral density, which is needed to estimate torsional response of tall buildings. In order to estimate characteristics, the wind tunnel tests have been conducted on 52 types aero-elastic model of the rectangular prisms with various aspects ratios, side ratios and surface roughness in turbulent boundary layer flows. In this paper, characteristics of torsional fluctuating wind force are briefly discussed and then these results were mainly analyzed as a function of the aspects ratios and side ratios of buildings.

  • 본 연구는 75m/s의 풍하중이 컨테이너 크레인에 작용할 때, 붐 형상 변화에 따라 풍하중이 컨테이너 크레인의 구조적 안정성에 미치는 영향을 풍동실험을 통하여 분석하여 컨테이너 크레인의 내풍설계 시 필요한 자료를 제공하기 위해 수행되었다. 풍동실험에 적용된 데이터 수집조건은 상사법칙에 준하여 설정되었으며, 컨테이너 크레인 모형, 풍속 및 시간의 축척률은 각각 1/200, 1/13.3 및 1/15로 하였다. 그리고 실험은 $11.25m^2$의 측정부 단면을 갖는 개방형 대기경계층풍동을 사용하여 수행하였다. 풍향에 따른 컨테이너 크레인의 풍력계수 및 전도모멘트계수가 조사되었으며, 풍하중에 의해 각 지지점에서 발생되는 전도력이 분석되었다.

Numerical simulation of wind loading on roadside noise mitigation structures

  • Numerical research on four typical configurations of noise mitigation structures and their characteristics of wind loads are reported in this paper. The turbulence model as well the model parameters, the modeling of the equilibrium atmospheric boundary layer, the mesh discretization etc., were carefully considered in the numerical model to improve the numerical accuracy. Also a numerical validation of one configuration with the wind tunnel test data was made. Through detailed analyses of the wind load characteristics with the inclined part and the wind incidence angle, it was found that the addition of an inclined part to a noise mitigation structure at-grade would affect the mean nett pressure coefficients on the vertical part, and that the extent of this effect depends on the length of the inclined part itself. The magnitudes of the mean nett pressure coefficients for both the vertical part and the inclined part of noise mitigation structure at-grade tended to increase with length of inclined part. Finally, a comparison with the wind load code British/European Standard BS EN 1991-1-4:2005 was made and the envelope of the mean nett pressure coefficients of the noise mitigation structures was given for design purposes. The current research should be helpful to improve current wind codes by providing more reasonable wind pressure coefficients for different configurations of noise mitigation structures.

Investigation of 3-D dynamic wind loads on lattice towers

  • In this paper, the along-wind, across-wind as well as torsional dynamic wind loads on three kinds of lattice tower models are investigated using the base balance technique in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The models were specially designed, and their fundamental frequencies in the directions of the three principal axes are still in the frequency range of the spectra of wind loads on lattice towers. In order to clear contaminations to the spectra of wind loads induced by model resonance, the generalized force spectra of the first mode of the models in along-wind, across-wind and torsional directions were derived based on measured base moments of the models. The RMS generalized force coefficients are also obtained by removing the contributions of model resonance. Finally, the characteristics of the 3-D dynamic wind loads, especially those of the across-wind dynamic loads, on the three kinds of lattice towers are presented and discussed.

Improvement of Lift Dump on a Fighter-Type Wing at Approach Condition

  • The 1/9-scale model of a fighter-type configuration was tested in the Micro-Craft 8ft ${\times}$ 12ft wind tunnel facility. An abrupt lift dump was found at a certain range of angle of attack under the pre-scheduled approach configuration. To avoid a probable unsatisfactory flight behavior due to the lift dump, various aerodynamic devices were suggested. Extensive tests applying the cutoff leading edge flaps, boundary layer fences, saw tooth and vortex generators were performed with flow visualization as well as force and moment measurements. Test results showed that the origin of the lift dump was caused by the secondary boundary layer flow separation generated from the strong interaction between wing and flap. Various solutions for avoiding the unfavorable feature were suggested with the merits and demerits.

차세대 고속열차 대차 형상에 따른 공기저항 변화에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on Aerodynamic Drag Characteristics by Train Bogie Shape Variation)

  • Wind tunnel tests are performed so as to investigate the aerodynamic drag characteristics of HEMU-400x, next generation Korean high speed train. The experiments of 1/20 scaled 5-car train model are done at 30, 40, 50, 60m/s with a normal bogie, a bogie cover, and a streamlined shape. The flat plate with knife edge are installed to minimize the effect of boundary layer of wind tunnel for the train model. The aerodynamic drag reduction was more by a streamlined shape than by a bogie cover from a normal bogie. Based on the experimental results, the aerodynamic drag of HEMU-400x test train(6-car) was predicted. It is prediceted that More bogie cover could reduce more aerodynamic drag of the test train in replacement of normal bogies.
