It has been long suspected that the transition region may give rise to local pressure fluctuations and radiated sound that are different from those created by the fully-developed turbulent boundary layer at equivalent Reynolds number. Experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of pressure fluctuations at the transition. Flush-mounted microphones and hot wires are used to measure the pressure fluctuations and local flow velocities within the boudary layer in the low noise wind tunnel. From this experimental we could observe the spatial and temporal development process of T-S wave using Wigner-Ville method and found the possibility of relation between the characteristic frequency of T-S wave and free stream velocity and the boundary layer thickness based on nondimensional pressure spectra scaled on outer variables.

A new quadrilateral mesh generation technique from an existing triangle mesh is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is based on advancing front method and zero-thickness layer. Beginning with an initial triangular mesh, boundary triangular elements are removed and quadrilateral elements with zero thickness are generated. A quality of quadrilateral elements is improved during a mesh smoothing process. Until all initial triangular elements are removed, this procedure is repeated. Sample meshes are constructed to demonstrate the mesh generation capability of proposed algorithm.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a two dimensional material which has high band-gap, flatness and inert properties. This properties are used various applications such as dielectric for electronic device, protective coating and ultra violet emitter so on. 1) In this report, we were growing h-BN sheet directly on sapphire 2"wafer. Ammonia borane (H3BNH3) and nickel were deposited on sapphire wafer by evaporate method. We used nickel film as a sub catalyst to make h-BN sheet growth. 2) During annealing process, ammonia borane moved to sapphire surface through the nickel grain boundary. 3) Synthesized h-BN sheet was confirmed by raman spectroscopy (FWHM: ~30cm-1) and layered structure was defined by cross TEM (~10 layer). Also we controlled number of layer by using of different nickel and ammonia borane thickness. This nickel film supported h-BN growth method may propose fully and directly growing on sapphire. And using deposited ammonia borane and nickel films is scalable and controllable the thickness for h-BN layer number controlling.

Membrane filtration has become firmly established as a primary process for ensuring the purity, safety and efficiency of treatment of water or effluents. Several researches have been performed to develop and design membrane systems in order to increase the accuracy and performance of the processes. In this study, a lattice Boltzmann method for the cake layer has been developed using particle dynamics based on an immersed boundary method and the cake layer formation process on membrane has been numerically simulated. Case studies including various particle sizes were also performed for a microfiltration process. The growth rate of the cake layer thickness and the permeation flow rate along the membranes were predicted. The results of this study agreed well with that of previous experiments. Effects of various particle diameters on the membrane performance were studied. The cake layer of a large particle tended to be growing fast and the permeation flow going down rapidly at the beginning. The layer thickness of a small particle increased constantly and the flow rate was smaller than that of the large particle at the end of simulation time.

A two-layer beam consisting of an elastoplastic layer and a functional layer made of shape memory alloy (SMA) TiNi is considered. Constitutive relations for SMA are set by a microstructural model capable to calculate strain increment produced by arbitrary increments of stress and temperature. This model exploits the approximation of small strains. The equations to calculate the variations of the strain and the internal variables are based on the experimentally registered temperature kinetics of the martensitic transformations with an account of the crystallographic features of the transformation and the laws of equilibrium thermodynamics. Stress and phase distributions over the beam height are calculated by steps, by solving on each step the boundary-value problem for given increments of the bending moment (or curvature) and the tensile force (or relative elongation). Simplifying Bernoulli's hypotheses are applied. The temperature is considered homogeneous. The first stage of the numerical experiment is modeling of preliminary deformation of the beam by bending or stretching at a temperature corresponding to the martensitic state of the SMA layer. The second stage simulates heating and subsequent cooling across the temperature interval of the martensitic transformation. The curvature variation depends both on the total thickness of the beam and on the ratio of the layer's thicknesses.

Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) are passive sampling devices used to determine the time-weighted average concentrations (TWAC) of contaminants. To ensure accurate performance in groundwater, it is crucial to identify environmental characteristics and maintain optimal operational conditions. This study examined the deployment time required to reach effective capacity, the thickness of the diffusive boundary layer (DBL) under stagnant water conditions, and biofilm formation on the DGT surface using groundwater samples. When using DGT with Chelex gel (A=3.14 cm2), the effective capacity was 0.7 ㎍ for Cd and 250 ㎍ for Zn, with a deployment time of 24 h. Lower Cd accumulation was due to the competition effect of coexisting ions. The DBL thickness under stagnant conditions was 0.074 cm, 93% of the diffusion gel's thickness (0.08 cm). Neglecting DBL thickness in TWAC calculations led to a 79% decrease in the determined concentration. No biofouling was observed during the 28-d DGT deployment in groundwater. In conclusion, it is essential to consider the appropriate deployment time, DBL thickness, and biofilm formation to ensure accurate DGT performance in determining contaminant levels in groundwater.

The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices were studied experimentally. The test facility consisted of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta winglet protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators were varied from $\pm20\;degree\;to\;\pm45$ degree, but spacings between the vortex generators were fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements were made using a five-hole pressure probe. Heat transfer measurements were made using the thermochromatic liquid to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. By using the method mentioned above, the following conclusions were obtained from the present experiment. The boundary layer was thinned in the regions where the secondary flow was directed toward the wall and thickened where it was directed away from the wall. The peak augmentation of the local heat transfer coefficient occurred in the downwash region near the point of minimum boundary-layer thickness.
An approach to control the position for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) based on an adaptive integral binary observer is described. The binary controller with a binary observer is composed of a main loop regulator and an auxiliary loop regulator. One of its key features is that it alleviates chatter in the constant boundary layer. However, steady state estimation accuracy and robustness are dependent upon the thickness of the constant boundary layer. In order to improve the steady state performance of the binary observer and eliminate the chattering problem of the constant boundary layer, a new binary observer is formed by adding extra integral dynamics to the existing switching hyperplane equation. Also, the proposed adaptive integral binary observer applies an adaptive scheme because the parameters of the dynamic equations such as the machine inertia and the viscosity friction coefficient are not well known. Furthermore, these values can typically be easily changed during normal operation. However, the proposed observer can overcome the problems caused by using the dynamic equations, and the rotor position estimation is constructed by integrating the rotor speed estimated with a Lyapunov function. Experimental results obtained using the proposed algorithm are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) dataset of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with a step change from smooth to rough surface is analyzed to examine spatially developing flow characteristics. The roughness elements are periodically arranged two-dimensional (2-D) spanwise rods with a streamwise pitch of ${\lambda}=8k$ ($=12{\theta}_{in}$), and the roughness height is $k=15{\theta}_{in}$, where ${\theta}_{in}$ is the inlet momentum thickness. The step change is introduced $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. For the first time, full images from the DNS data with the step change from the smooth to rough walls is present to get some idea of the geometry of turbulent coherent structures over rough wall, especially focusing on their existence and partial dynamics over the rough wall. The results show predominance of hairpin vortices over the rough wall and their spanwise scale growth mechanism by merging.
