  • Suction and discharge valves of special type refrigerant compressor are designed by finite element method for effective valve design development procedure. It is well known that valve dynamic characteristics, for example, the natural frequencies and vibration modes, are necessary for the computer simulation of compressor valve dynamics, the analysis of flow patterns, noise, impact stresses and their propagation phenomena. This paper has analysed the natural frequencies and vibration modes for the first three orders under the given special boundary conditions and the experiments are conducted by laser holography. And also stress distribution is analysed and experiment by strain gage is followed.

  • Daedeok Valley, located in the Daejon Metropolitan City, Korea, has around 1,000 start-ups. There is no comprehensive study for the valley except Seol et al.(2002), because the valley is a new one. There was no such valley four years ago, in 1998. This paper defines the spatial boundary, origins and characteristics of the valley. The core area of the valley is Daedeok Science Town. This valley is an outcome of so called the Venture Policy of DJ government and business restructuring after foreign exchange crisis of November, 1997.

  • Some characteristics of the eigenvalue sensitivities have been found for beams in the paper. For cantilever beams and simply supported beams, the sensitivities of the eigenvalues to the stiffness correction factor of one element are equal and opposite to the sensitivities to the mass correction factor of the symmetrically positioned element. For beams with other boundary conditions, however, the relationship does not hold. The relationship has been proven analytically for simply supported beams.

  • The characteristics of slow wave structure employed for backward wave oscillators expected to be a high power microwave source are studied analyytically. The slow wave structure is a sinusoidally corrugated wall waveguide. The waveguide is designed and fabricated by cast aluminun. The dispersion relation and transmitted characteristics for microwaves are measured in the air. There exist literatures on high efficiency of enhanced radiation from backward wave oscillators involving plasma studied experimentally.

  • Three noded plate and shell finite element and 3D beam element in conjunction with Lanczos method are used for studying the effect of boat tail angle on the free vibration characteristics of a typical payload fairing for three different cylinder diameters with height to diameter ratio 1.5. Configurations without boat tail structural member are also studied. One half of the one side fairing structure is considered for the analysis and symmetric boundary conditions are used.

  • The cavities formed by the excavation of coal seam cause unstable within rock body, leading to large displacement around adjacent roadway. This displacement brings the closure of roadway and deformation of support. Therefore, it is necessary to understand and predict the deformation characteristics of roadway while coal seam is under excavation. In this study, the observed displacements are compared with the calculated ones through the analysis using Linear Boundary Element Mothod under the elastostatic conditions, in order to determine the virgin stress state and deformation modulus which affect the deformation characteristices.

  • The propagation characteristics of the symmetric and the asymmetric shielded coplanar waveguide with finite metallization thickness is analyzed by boundary integral method employing the equivalence principle. Since the Green's function and the basis functions are composed of sinusoidal functions, the integration in Galerkin's method is solved analytically. The propagation constants of the fundamental and the first higher order mode are obtained and the effects of strip thickness, substrate permittivity, and the asymmetry of the structure are calculated.

  • The paper deals with a theoretical study on the vibrational characteristics of piezoelectric torsional transducers. The differential equations of piezoelectric torsional motion have been derived in terms of the circumferential displacement and the electric potential. Applying mechanical and electrical boundary conditions has yielded the characteristic equations of natural vibration in several transducer types. Numerical results have clarified the effect of the piezoelectric phenomenon on the mechanical resonance and the effect of the elastic block of a Langevin-type transducer on the natural frequency.

  • The vibrational characteristics of Langevin-type piezoelectric torsional transducers have been studied theoretically and experimentally in this paper. The differential equations of piezoelectric torsional motion have been derived in terms of the circumferential displacement and the electric potential. Solutions of the boundary-value problem have yielded the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the transducers. The theoretical solutions have been verified by comparing the numerical results with experimental ones.
