  • The purpose of this study is to examine the implications of Deleuze and Guattari's Machinism and Pedagogy of Assemblages. A slow, empirical process offered by Deleuze and Guattari is possible only if they experience a repetition of the duration in time. The identity of this world, a combination of potential and reality, is expressed as a machine. The identity of the 'machine' is the generation. The identity of the information society that exists everywhere in the cloud and unconsciously collects big data is also the information society. The information society is at risk of leaning toward a society in which individual desires are managed prior to the manifestation of a self-reliance a machine consisting of unmarked and mechanical arrangements. Social science based on the theory of layout shares the characteristics of repetition patterns, coexistence of linguistic and materiality, attention to boundary and negation to total whole. The pedagogy of layout, in which the collective pattern is structurally deformed in time, conforms to the original problem consciousness of Deleuze and Guattari, slow and empirical education. In addition, the work of examining the materiality and expression of the education-machine will contribute to the establishment of a new learning theory, an educational theory in the era of trans-human.

  • The practical usage of underground space and demand for vehicular tunnels necessitate the construction of non-circular wide rectangular tunnels. However, constructing large tunnels in soft clayey soil conditions with no ground improvement can lead to excessive ground deformations and collapse. In recent years, in situ ground improvement techniques such as jet grouting and deep cement mixing are often utilized to perform cement-stabilisation around the tunnel boundary to prevent large deformations and failure. This paper discusses the stability characteristics and failure behaviour of a wide rectangular tunnel in cement-treated soft clays. First, the plane strain finite element model is developed and validated with the results of centrifuge model tests available in the past literature. The critical tunnel support pressures computed from the numerical study are found to be in good agreement with those of centrifuge model tests. The influence of varying strength and thickness of improved soil surround, and cover depth are studied on the stability and failure modes of a rectangular tunnel. It is observed that the failure behaviour of the tunnel in improved soil surround depends on the ratio of the strength of improved soil surround to the strength of surrounding soil, i.e., qui/qus, rather than just qui. For low qui/qus ratios, the stability increases with the cover; however, for the high strength improved soil surrounds with qui >> qus, the stability decreases with the cover. The failure chart, modified stability equation, and stability chart are also proposed as preliminary design guidelines for constructing rectangular tunnels in the improved soil surrounded by soft clays.

  • This paper suggests a novel approach of integrating the quasi-distributed watershed model SWAT with the fully-distributed groundwater model MODFLOW. Since the SWAT model has semi distributed features, its groundwater components hardly considers distributed parameters such as hydraulic conductivity and storage coefficient. Generating a detailed representation of groundwater recharge, head distribution and pumping rate is equally difficult. To solve these problems, the method of exchanging the characteristics of the hydrologic response units (HRUs) in SWAT with cells in MODFLOW by fully combined manner is proposed. The linkage is completed by considering the interaction between the stream network and the aquifer to reflect boundary flow. This approach is provisionally applied to Gyungancheon basin in Korea. The application demonstrates a combined model which enables an interaction between saturated zones and channel reaches. This interaction plays an essential role in the runoff generation in the Gyungancheon basin. The comprehensive results show a wide applicability of the model which represents the temporal-spatial groundwater head distribution and recharge.

  • Geology and terrain of Imha basin has a very weak characteristics to soil erosion, so much soil particles flow into Imha reservoir and bring about high density turbid water when it rains a lot. Especially, since the agricultural area of Imha basin is mainly located in river boundary, Imha reservoir has suffered from turbid water by soil erosion. Therefore, it is important to estimate the influence of soil erosion to establish efficient management of water-pollutant buffering zone for the reduction of turbid water. By applying GIS-based RUSLE model, this study can acquire 12.23% that is the ratio of soil erosion in water-pollutant buffering zone and is higher than area-ratio (9.95%) of water-pollutant buffering zone. This is why the area-ratio of agricultural district (27.24%) in water-pollutant buffering zone is higher than the area-ratio of agricultural district (14.96%) in Imha basin. Also as the result of soil erosion in sub-basin, Daegok basin shows highest soil erosion in water-pollutant buffering zone, second is Banbyeon_10 basin and last is Seosi basin.

  • The existing analytical solutions for rectangular plates with three edges clamped and the other free are derived based on nondimensional differential equation and their characteristics are analyzed. Since Timoshenko and Woinowsky-Krieger's method (1959) can give solutions for the case limited to the aspect ratio of the plates less than one, this method are proved to be impractical for the bending moment calculation of the plates under consideration. Horii and Moto's method(1968) are modified by adding stabilizing terms to suppress overflow in the matrix computation, from which the series solution with maximum 150 terms can be obtained. By use of the series solution the convergence of computed bending moments is tested. The modified method can be shown to calculate the deflection properties for the plates with wide range of aspect ratios, but the computed x moment at the corner points formed by the free edge and the clamped edges can not satisfy the boundary condition and the cause of problem is discussed in detail.

  • The performance of a pontoon-type floating breakwater (FB) is investigated numerically with the use of a second-order time domain model. The model has been developed based on potential theory, perturbation theory and boundary element method. This study is focused on the effects of weakly nonlinear wave on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the FB. Hydrodynamic forces, motion responses, surface elevation, and wave transmission coefficient around the floating breakwater are evaluated for various wave and geometric parameters. It is shown that the second-order wave component is of significant importance in calculating magnitudes of the hydrodynamic forces, mooring forces and the maximum response of a structure. The weak non-linearity of incident waves, however, can have little influence on the efficiency of the FB. From numerical simulations, the ratio of draft and depth, the relationship of wave number and width are presented for providing an effective means of reducing wave energy.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract lineaments in the southeastern part of the Gaeum Fault System, and to understand their characteristics and a relationship between them and fault activation. The lineaments were extracted using a multi-layered analysis based on a digital elevation model (5 m resolution), aerial photos, and satellite images. First-grade lineaments inferred as an high-activity along them were classified based on the displacement of the Quaternary deposits and the distribution of fault-related landforms. The results of classifying the first-grade lineaments were verified by fieldwork and electrical resistivity survey. In the study area of 510 km2, a total of 222 lineaments was identified, and their total length was 333.4 km. Six grade lineaments were identified, and their total length was 11.2 km. The lineaments showed high-density distribution in the region along the Geumcheon, Gaeum, Ubo fault, and a boundary of the Hwasan cauldron consisting the Gaeum Fault System. They generally have WNW-ESE trend, which is the same direction with the strike of Gaeum Fault System. Electrical resistivity survey was conducted on eight survey lines crossing the first-grade lineament. A low-resistivity zone, which is assumed to be a fault damage zone, has been identified across almost all survey lines (except for only one survey line). The visual (naked eyes) detecting of the lineament was evaluated to be less objectivity than the automatic extraction using the algorithm. However, the results of electrical resistivity survey showed that first-grade lineament extracted by visual detecting was 83% reliable for inferred fault detection. These results showed that objective visual detection results can be derived from multi-layered analysis based on tectonic geomorphology.

  • Socrates did not found a religion, and in this sense he is different from Confucius, Buddha and Jesus. So there can be no 'Socrates' religion'. But if we can assume that there are evidently religious aspects in his thought, and if it can become a religion by expanding these aspects, then we may conclude that 'Socratic religion' is possible. In general, there are three arguments to regard Socrates as a religious person. The first is to see him as a precursor of Christianity or a Christian martyr, the second is to regard Socrates' daimonion as identical with Christian revelation, and the third is to argue that Socrates was a religious person because of his firm belief in the immortality of soul. But in this paper, I argue that these three arguments offer some justifications but insufficient to conclude that he was a religious person. Shall we conclude then that not only Socratic religion is impossible but also he was not a religious person? I do not think so. For there are two counter arguments. Religious truths have at least two essential characteristics. First, those who have religious truths are absolutely happy, no matter what. This is why Socrates as a religious person could advise his disciples to improve their souls even at the time of his death bed. Second, those who have religious truths do love others, no matter what. How could it be possible for someone to love invisible ultimate reality if he did not love visible brothers? This is why Socrates as a religious person took his mission to philosophize as a divine command. Socrates did not initiate any official religion, but he was truly a devout religious person, who transcended the boundary of institutionalized religion. It follows that Socratic religion is evidently possible.

  • To ensure the safety of the pipeline against large deformation of the pipeline during lowering construction, the analysis for pipeline becomes emphasized. The FE analysis has a lower efficiency at calculating time, while it could be obtained high accuracy. In this paper, a reasonable analytical model for analysis of pipeline is proposed during lowering-in. This analytical model is partitioned considering the geometrical characteristics and modeled as two parameters Beam On Elastic Foundation and Euler-Bernoulli beam considering the boundary condition. This takes into account the pipeline-soil interaction and the axial forces acting on the pipeline. Previous model can only be applied to standardized conditions, whereas the proposed model defined as Segmented Pipeline Model can be considered for the majority of construction conditions occurred during lowering-in. In addition, minimized assumptions and segmented elements lead to improve the convenience and applicability of modeling. Nevertheless, the model shows accurate results compared to the FE model. Accordingly, it is expected that it will be used efficiently for configuration management as well as safety assessment of pipeline during lowering-in.

  • Aluminum alloys, known for their high strength-to-weight ratios and impressive electrical and thermal conductivities, are extensively used in numerous engineering sectors, such as aerospace, automotive, and construction. Recently, significant efforts have been made to develop novel aluminum alloys specifically tailored for additive manufacturing. These new alloys aim to provide an optimal balance between mechanical properties and thermal/electrical conductivities. In this study, nine combinatorial samples with various alloy compositions were fabricated using direct energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing by adjusting the feeding speeds of Al6061 alloy and Al-12Si alloy powders. The effects of the alloying elements on the microstructure, electrical conductivity, and hardness were investigated. Generally, as the Si and Cu contents decreased, electrical conductivity increased and hardness decreased, exhibiting trade-off characteristics. However, electrical conductivity and hardness showed an optimal combination when the Si content was adjusted to below 4.5 wt%, which can sufficiently suppress the grain boundary segregation of the α-Si precipitates, and the Cu content was controlled to induce the formation of Al2Cu precipitates.
