  • This paper proposes a method to calculate the characteristics of a coupled hydrodynamic journal and thrust bearing of a HDD spindle motor. The governing equations for the journal and thrust bearings are the two dimensional Reynolds equations in ${\theta}z$ and $r\theta$ planes, respectively. Finite element method is appropriately applied to analyze the coupled journal and thrust bearing by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the journal and thrust bearings. The pressure in a coupled bearing is calculated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition and compared with that by using the Half-Sommerfeld boundary condition. The static characteristics are obtained by integrating the pressure along the fluid film. The flying height of spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the proposed method can describe HDB in a HDD system more accurately and realistically than the separate analysis of a journal or thrust bearing.

  • A method is presented for determining the free vibration characteristics of a rotating blade having nonuniform span wise properies and cantilevers boundary condition. The equations which govern the coupled the coupled flapwise, choirwise, and torsional motion of such a blade are solved using an integrating matrix method. By expressing the equation of motion in matrix notation, utilizing the integrating matrix as an operator, and applying the boundary condition, the equations are formulated into an eigenvalues problem whose solution may be determined by conventional method. Computer results are compared with experimental data.

  • We have investigated hydrodynamical behaviors of spicules by solving numerically the hydrodynamic equations subject to proper boundary conditions using the method of characteristics. We examined the behaviors of MHD slow mode waves propagating through rigid magnetic flux tubes which were excited by the pressure perturbations at the lower boundary. It is found that the spicules are identified as the manifestation of the movement of the transition region being pushed upward by collisions with the shock waves. One of the most important findings is the presence of the rebound shocks and their roles. We interpreted the rebound shocks in terms of the observed recurrent spicules.

  • The numerical simulation of air movement in a room using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) requires a complicated set of input data, This includes physical data, such as space geometry, characteristics of supply air flow and contaminant source, etc. as well as computational domain. Among the input data, the boundary conditions related to the inlet are particularly crucial in order to achieve accurate computation results, although there are many other parameters which may also affect the results. • This study presents numerical solutions of three-dimensional laminar flow-field formed by photo resist flow in a slit-coater model. We discuss on the governing equations, laminar viscosities and the computational model applied in our numerical calculation and some results. We prove that the structure of tapered-cavity aid to make uniform pressure-field and boundary effect is an important problem to improve coating uniformity. In view of uniformity improvement, it is necessary to study for the structure of cavity and flow path.

  • This paper shows how boundary element method can be used to calculate torsion geometrical stiffness of cross-sections of various beams and airfoil profiles. Using the BEM direct formulation, the technique for determining bending and torsional geometrical characteristics of arbitrary multiply connected cross-sections is presented. The application limits of several well-known formulae on some test problems have been demonstrated and discused.

  • In this paper, we propose a boundary input method for video surveillance systems. Since intrusion of a moving object is decided by comparition of its position and the surveillance boundary, the boundary input method is a basic function in video surveillance. Previous methods are difficult to adapt to the change of surveillance environments such as the size of surveillance area, the number of cameras, and the position of cameras because those build up the surveillance boundary using the captured image in the center of each camera. In our approach, the whole surveillance boundary is once defined in the form of polygon based on the satellite map and transformed into each camera environment. Its characteristics is that the boundary input is independent from the surveillance environment. Given the position of a moving object, the time complexity of its intrusion detection shows O(n), where n is the number of polygon vertices. To verify our method, we implemented a 3D simulation and assured that the input boundary can be reused in each camera without any redefinition.

  • In this study, the transition Reynolds number of compressible axi-symmetric sharp cone boundary layer is predicted by using a linear stability theory and the -method. The compressible linear stability equation for sharp cone boundary layer was derived from the governing equations on the body-intrinsic axi-symmetric coordinate system. The numerical analysis code for the stability equation was developed based on a second-order accurate finite-difference method. Stability characteristics and amplification rate of two-dimensional second mode disturbance for the sharp cone boundary layer were calculated from the analysis code and the numerical code was validated by comparing the results with experimental data. Transition prediction was performed by application of the -method with N=10. From comparison with wind tunnel experiments and flight tests data, capability of the transition prediction of this study is confirmed for the sharp cone boundary layers which have an edge Mach number between 4 and 8. In addition, effect of wall cooling on the stability of disturbance in the boundary layer and transition position is investigated.
