  • In wide angle diffuser, the cross-sectional area increases so rapidly that separation can be avoided only by using boundary layer control. In this study, an experimental and numerical study is performed on performance of a diffuser with guide damper. A series of measurements were carried out to investigate the characteristics of diffuser for different divergence angle(${\phi}=7^{\circ}, \;10.5^{\circ}\;and\; 14^{\circ}$) of guide damper and angle of ${\phi}=10.5^{\circ}$ was through to be the best among three cases. Judging from the results, guide damper can be used as an effective means of improvement for diffuser performance.

  • Liquid droplets of water and argon surrounded by their vapor have been simulated by the milecular dynamics method. To explore the surface phenomena of clusters, each molecule is classified into 'liquid', 'surface', or 'vapor' with respect to the number of neighbor molecules. The contribution of a 'surface' molecule of the water cluster to the far infrared spectrum is almist the same as that of the 'liquid' molecule. Hence, the liquid-vapor interface is viewed as geometrically and temporally varying boundary of 'liquid' molecules with only a single layer of 'surface' molecules that might have different characteristics from the 'liquid' molecules. The time scale of the 'phase change' of each molecule is estimated for the argon cluster by observing the instantancous kinetic and potential energies of each molecule. To compare the feature of clusters with macroscopic droplets, the temperature dependence of the surface tension of the argon cluster is estimated.

  • For the analysis of Kirchhoff plate bending problems, a new meshless method is implemented. For the satisfaction of the $C^1$ continuity condition in which the first derivative is treated an another primary variable, Hermite interpolation is enforced on standard reproducing kernel particle method. In order to impose essential boundary conditions on solving $C^1$ continuity problems, shape function modifications are adopted. Through numerical tests, the characteristics and accuracy of the HRKPM are investigated and compared with the finite element analysis. By this implementatioa it is shown that high accuracy is achieved by using HRKPM for solving Kirchhoff plate bending problems.

  • A numerical study has been carried out to investigate heat transfer enhancement in channel flow using large-scale vortices. A square cylinder, inclined with respect to the main flow direction, is located at the center of the channel flow, generating a separation region and Karman vortices. Two cases are considered; one with a fixed blockage ratio and the other one with a fixed cylinder size. In both cases, the flow characteristics downstream of the cylinder significantly change depending on the inclination angle. As a result, heat transfer from channel wall is significantly enhanced due to increased vertical-velocity fluctuations induced by the large-scale vortices shed from the cylinder. Quantitative results as well as qualitative physical explanation are presented to justify the effectiveness of the inclined square cylinder as a vortex generator to enhance heat transfer from channel wall.

  • The present study is numerically and experimentally performed to reveal the pumping characteristics of a helical-type molecular drag pump (HTDP) in the molecular transition flow region. In the experimental study, the pressures are measured simultaneously at the 5 positions along the helical channel of rotor under various conditions of outlet pressure and throughputs, and nitrogen is used as test gas. The outlet pressure is in the range of 26-533 Pa. As results, the local pressure changes are checked corresponding to the various outlet pressure and throughput of HTDP. In the numerical study, Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions are employed (Re< 1000, Kn< 0.1). The local pressure distribution and the pumping speed are calculated. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results. The numerically computed value agrees with the experimental data within an error of approximately 5%.

  • Human heart valves diseased by congenital heart defects, rheumatic fever, bacterial infection, cancer may cause stenosis or insufficiency in the valves. Treatment may be with medication but often involves valve repair or replacement (insertion of an artificial heart valve). Bileaflet mechanical heart valves (BMHVs) are widely implanted to replace the diseased heart valves, but still suffer from complications such as hemolysis, platelet activation, tissue overgrowth and device failure. These complications are closely related to both flow characteristics through the valves and leaflet dynamics. In this study, the physiological flow interacting with the moving leaflets in a bileaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV) is simulated with a strongly coupled implicit fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method which is newly organized based on the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach and the dynamic mesh method (remeshing) in FLUENT. The simulated results are in good agreement with previous experimental studies. This study shows the applicability of the present FSI model to the complicated physics interacting between fluid flow and moving boundary.

  • A numerical study for the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics of the evaporating tube with the films flowing down on both the inside and outside tube walls has been carried out. The condensation occurs along the outside wall while the evaporation occurs at the free surface of the inside film. The transport equations for momentum and energy are parabolized by the boundary-layer approximation and solved by using the marching technique. The calculation domain of 2 film flow regions (evaporating and condensation films at the inside and outside tube wall respectively) and tube wall is solved simultaneously. The coupling technique for the problem with the 3 different regions and the 2 interfaces of them has been developed to calculate the temperature field. The velocity and temperature fields and the amount of the condensed and evaporated mass as well as the position where the evaporating film is completely dried out are successfully predicted for various inside pressures and inside film inlet flow rates.

  • The CWR of the plate girder bridges in non-ballast causes the additional axial force on the rail and the bearing due to the temperature axial force and the interaction between the CWR and bridges. This study shows the remarkable improvement of reducing the axial force of the CWR on the non-ballast bridge, compared to conventional methods. New method, which is differently designed in terms of longitudinal semi-rigid bearing, reduces the axial force on the bearing by making the girder act both directions. This method is applicable to most cases of bridges regardless of the restriction of length, and useful to reduce the abrasion and damage of the track material.

  • The corrugated panels are the prime candidate structure for the floor, roof and wall of Korean high speed train. The equivalent continuum modeling approach panels can be used for the efficient design and evaluation of their structural characteristics. The equivalent continuum models, derived from the true complex corrugated panels, should have the same structural behavior as the original structures have. This paper briefly reviews three representative continuum modeling methods: the static analysis method and two plate-models based on modal analysis methods (MAM). These methods are evaluated through some numerical examples by comparing the natural frequencies and static deflections. It is observed that the plate-model based on Rayleigh-Ritz method seems to provide the best results when used in conjunction with the cantilever-type boundary conditions. The equivalent elastic constants of various corrugated panels, depending on the changes in their configurations, are tabulated for efficient use in structural design.

  • Composites are very useful material for light train carbody due to its high specific strength and lightweight characteristics. The composites, called 3-D board, are developed with a special stitching method. In this process, the glass fiber fabrics of skin material and foam core material are stitched together with glass fiber thread. The glass thread in Z-axis turns into FRP form. The conventional delamination problem can be solved with 3-D sandwich structure. In addition, with the lower density of foam, the weight of the panel and the operation expenses can be highly reduced. To evaluate the usefulness of the 3-D board, the double-deck light train carbody is studied. The stress analyses are carried out under various loads and boundary conditions with FEM Code, ANSYS. On comparing with the aluminum carbody, 3-D board carbody can be reduced by about 2 ton for the total weight of carbody.
