  • This paper proposes a method to improve video quality on images that have blocking artifacts at block boundary. Block image transform coding suffers from blocking artifact that is a main cause of degrading video quality because of the quantization error of transform coefficients in quantization process. filtering and DPCM for DC components have been widely used to reduce blocking artifact. Recently, lots of works focus on the technique that minimizes block effects using discontinuity of block boundaries. In this paper, image blurring in decoding stage is improved by adding compensation factor to each transformed blocks so that discontinuity of block boundaries can be decreased. The compensation factor is applied on each block without much loss of edge components.

  • This paper focuses on lossy medical image compression methods for medical images that operate on three-dimensional(3D) irreversible integer wavelet transform. We offer an application of the Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees(SPIHT) algorithm〔l-3〕to medical images, using a 3-D wavelet decomposition and a 3-D spatial dependence tree. The wavelet decomposition is accomplished with integer wavelet filters implemented with the lifting method, where careful scaling and truncations keep the integer precision small and the transform unitary. As the compression rate increases, the boundaries between adjacent coding units become increasingly visible. Unlike video, the volume image is examined under static condition, and must not exhibit such boundary artifacts. In order to eliminate them, we utilize overlapping at axial boundaries between adjacent coding units. We have tested our encoder on medical images using different integer filters. Results show that our algorithm with certain filters performs as well. The improvement is visibly manifested as fewer ringing artifacts and noticeably better reconstruction of low contrast.

  • In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm for reducing the blocking artifact in block transform-coded images by using a wavelet transform. In the proposed method, an image is considered as a set of one-dimensional horizontal and vertical signals and one-dimensional wavelet transform is utilized in which the mother wavelet is the first order derivative of a Gaussian like function. The blocking artifact is reduced by removing the blocking component, that causes the variance at the block boundary position in the first scale wavelet domain to be abnormally higher than those at the other positions, using a minimum mean square error (MMSE) filter in the wavelet domain. This filter minimizes the MSE between the ideal blocking component-free signal and the restored signal in the neighborhood of block boundaries in the wavelet domain. It also uses local variance in the wavelet domain for pixel adaptive processing. The filtering and the projection onto a convex set of quantization constraint are iteratively performed in alternating fashion. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields not only a PSNR improvement of about 0.56-1.07 dB, but also subjective quality nearly free of the blocking artifact and edge blur.

  • In this paper, we proposed a b1ocking artifact reduction algorithm using similarity and linear combination between blocks. In the proposed method, all of the blocks are classified into low frequency block and high frequency block according to the their DCT coefficients. And we defined range block which shows blocking artifacts, as block centered to block boundary and defied domain block as similar block with range block within search range. In the search procedure, we used sub-block's property of range block and similarity for more accurate searching. Finally blocking artifact reduction algorithm is performed using linear combination between searched domain block and blocky range block. The performance of the proposed method is investigated by computer simulation in comparison with the traditional methods. In the experimental results, Ire confirmed the better performance in the subjective by 0.04∼0.4 dB and objective image quality.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method to remove the boundary artifacts of rendered views caused by damaged depth maps in the 3D video system. First, characteristics of boundary artifacts with the compression noise in depth maps are carefully studied. Then, the artifacts suppression method is proposed by the iterative projection onto convex sets (POCS) algorithm with setting the convex set in pixel and frequency domain. The proposed method is applied to both texture and depth maps separately during view rendering. The simulation results show the boundary artifacts are greatly reduced with improving the quality of synthesized views.

  • When the imaging object rotates in image plane during MRI scan, its rotation causes phase error and non-uniform sampling to MRI signal. The model of the problem including phase error non-uniform sampling of MRI signal showed that the MRI signals corrupted by rotations about an arbitrary center and the origin in image plane are different in their phases. Therefore the following methods are presented to improve the quality of the MR image which includes the artifact. The first, assuming that the angle of 2-D rotational motion is already known and the position of 2-D rotational center is unknown, an algorithm to correct the artifact which is based on the phase correction is presented. The second, in case of 2-D rotational motion with unknown rotational center and unknown rotational angle, an algorithm is presented to correct the MRI artifact. At this case, the energy of an ideal MR image is minimum outside the boundary of the imaging object to estimate unknown motion parameters and the measured energy increases when the imaging object has an rotation. By using this property, an evaluation function is defined to estimate unknown values of rotational angle at each phase encoding step. Finally, the effectiveness of this presented techniques is shown by using a phantom image with simulated motion and a real image with 2-D translational shift and rotation.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm with adaptive thresholding for the wavelet transform (WT) based blocking artifact reduction. In the fast algorithm, all processings that are equivalent to the processing in WT domain of the first and second scale are performed in spatial domain. In the adaptive thresholding, the threshold values used to classify the block boundary are selected adaptively according to each input image by using the statistical properties of the WT of the coded signal at block boundary and at block center, which can be obtained in spatial domain. Experimental results showed that the proposed fast algorithm is about 10 times faster than the WT-based algorithm. It also was found that the postprocessing with proposed adaptive thresholding yields some PSNR improvement and better subjective quality over that with nonadaptive thresholding which has best performance at high compression ratios of a certain .image, even at low compression ratios.

  • In this paper, a new anisotropic diffusion based on Alvarez, Lions, and Morel (ALM) diffusion model is proposed for the suppression of blocking artifact caused by discrete cosine transform (DCT) based image compression. The proposed diffusion model, which incorporates a 'rate control parameter' (RCP), makes it possible to reduce blocking artifacts while to preserve the edge. The RCP controls the rate between isotropic and anisotropic diffusion. Isotropic diffusion is encouraged to eliminate the blocking artifacts in a block boundary of a smooth region, while anisotropic diffusion is encouraged to keep the edge or texture sharp in edge and a block boundary within an edge region. Additionally, to avoid oversmoothness of the texture region, a 'speed control parameter' (SCP), which makes diffusion process slow in the texture region, is employed.

  • Fast Fourier transform(FFT) is powerful, fast computation framework for convolution in many image restoration application. However, an actually observed image acquired with finite aperture of the acquisition device from the infinite background and it lost data outside the cropped region. Because of these the boundary artifacts are produced. This paper reviewed and summarized the up to date the techniques that have been applied to reduce of the boundary artifacts. Moreover, we propose a new block-based fast image restoration using combined extrapolation and edge-tapering without boundary artifacts with reduced computational loads. We apply edgetapering to the inner blocks because they contain outside information of boundary. And outer blocks use half-convolution extrapolation. For this process it is possible that fast image restoration without boundary artifacts.
