  • A satisfiability problem in propositional logic is the problem of checking for the existence of a set of truth values of atomic prepositions that renders an input propositional formula true. This paper describes an empirical investigation of a particular integer programming approach, using the set covering model, to solve satisfiability problems. Our satisfiability engine, SETSAT, is a fully integrated, linear programming based, branch and bound method using various symbolic routines for the reduction of the logic formulas. SETSAT has been implemented in the integer programming shell MINTO which, in turn, uses the CPLEX linear programming system. The logic processing routines were written in C and integrated into the MINTO functions. The experiments were conducted on a benchmark set of satisfiability problems that were compiled at the University of Ulm in Germany. The computational results indicate that our approach is competitive with the state of the art.

  • We treats a job scheduling in a 2-machine flow-shop problem with outsourcing strategy allowed. Jobs in the first machine are processed in-house or outsourced to the other companies. In this paper, all the considered jobs are determined to be in-house processed or outsourced. When a job is outsourced, then the firm should pay an outsourcing cost additionally. We want to minimize the sum of the outsourcing costs and the total completion times of finished jobs. In this paper, some solution properties are characterized, and then some heuristic algorithms and a branch-and-bound solution algorithm are derived. This paper evaluates finally the performance of the proposed algorithms during the numerical tests.

  • This paper considers a revenue maximization problem on a single processor. Each job is identified as its processing time, initial reward, reward decreasing rate, and preferred start time. If the processor starts a job at time zero, revenue of the job is its initial reward. However, the revenue decreases linearly with the reward decreasing rate according to its processing start time till its preferred start time and finally its revenue is zero if it is started the processing after the preferred time. Our objective is to find the optimal sequence which maximizes the total revenue. For the problem, we characterize the optimal solution properties and prove the NP-hardness. Based upon the characterization, we develop a branch-and-bound algorithm for the optimal sequence and suggest five heuristic algorithms for efficient solutions. The numerical tests show that the characterized properties are useful for effective and efficient algorithms.

  • When real robot manipulators arc mathematically modeled, uncertainties are not avoidable. The uncertainties are often nonlinear and time varying, The uncertain factors come from imperfect knowledge of system parameters, payload change, friction, external disturbance and etc. We proposed a class of robust hybrid position/force control of manipulators and provided the stability analysis in the previous work. In the work, we propose a class of adaptive robust hybrid position/force control of manipulators with bound estimation and the stability based on Lyapunov function is presented. Especially, this controller does not need the information of uncertainty bound. The simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

  • In this paper we derive a Berry-Esseen type bound for the kernel density estimator of a random left truncated model, in which each datum (Y) is randomly left truncated and is sampled if $Y{\geq}T$, where T is the truncation random variable with an unknown distribution. This unknown distribution is estimated with the Lynden-Bell estimator. In particular the normal approximation rate, by choice of the bandwidth, is shown to be close to $n^{-1/6}$ modulo logarithmic term. We have also investigated this normal approximation rate via a simulation study.

  • A simulation method based on upper bound method is developed in order to characterize forging characters in forging of spur gears. In this paper, utilizing a kinematically admissible velocity field and applying it to investigate the effect of inner diameter of holow billet. In the analysis, to predict the variation of inner diameter of hollw billet, neutral surface has been introduced. The neutral surface of each step is assumed as a circle and determined in order to have minimum forging energy by golden section method. By this method, the variation of inner diameter of billet during spur gear forging is successfully predicted. As a result, the selection of inner diameter of initial billet is very important to reduce the forging load.

In this paer, utlizing a kinematically admissible velocity field and applying it to study the effect of inner diameter of holow billet. To predict the variation of inner diameter of hollow billet, neutal surface has been introduced into forging of hollow gears from hollow billes with flat punch. The neutral surface of each step is assumed as a circle and determined in order to have minimum forging energy by golden section method. According to the analysis, the magnitude of inner diameter of initial billet is vary important to reduce the relative pressure and forging load. And the variation of inner diameter of billet during spur gear forging is successfully predicted.

  • Copper magnetron anode of a microwave-oven consists of an cylindrical outer-tube and various inner-vanes. The magnetron anode is produced by the complex process ; vane blanking, pipe cutting and sliver-alloy brazing of vanes. Recently, the backward extrusion process for forming vanes has been developed to avoid the complex procedures. The developed process is analyzed by using upper-bound elemental technique(UBET). In the UBET analysis, the upper-bound load, the configuration and the vane-height of final extruded product are determined by minimizing the total power consumption with respect to chosen parameters. To verify theoretical analysis, experiments have been carried out with pure plasticine billets at room temperature, using different web-thickness and number of vanes. The theoretical predictions both for forming load and vane-height are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results.

  • In this work, a new control methodology to achieve accurate position control of an AC servo motor subjected to external disturbance is proposed. Unlike conventional sliding mode controller which requires a prior knowledge of the upper bound of external disturbance, the proposed technique, called sliding mode controller with disturbance estimator (SMCDE), can offer robust control performances without a prior knowledge of the disturbance bound. The SMCDE is featured by an integrated average value of the imposed disturbance over a certain sampling period. By doing this, undesirable chattering phenomenon in the estimation process can be effectively alleviated. The benefits of the proposed control methodology are empirically demonstrated on AC servo motor and control responses are evaluated through a comparative work between the proposed and conventional control schemes.

  • Closed-die forging of spline was analysed using the upper bound elemental technique, Two different forging methods, denoted here as side extrusion-forging and upset forging, were proposed, The kinematically admissible velocity fields for each of the forging methods, which could express trapezoidal, rectangular and serration tooth forms, were presented. Upper bounds to forging loads and deformed configurations were predicted using the velocity fields. Theoretical results were compared with experimental ones. Experiments with lead were carried out at room temperature where grease was used as a lubricant. The present investigation revealed that analytical forging loads were reduced by using the side extrusion-forging but the upset forging could improve configuration of the final forged splines.
