Hydraulic computations to determine the elevation of canal bottom and mater surface for box type concrete culverts are discussed. Velocity and cross sectional area of flow are computed from Manning's formula. Aad then head loss and velocity head are considered to determine the elevation of bottom and water surface. For stress analysis, 13.5 ton live load and earth pressure are considered. Also longitudinal stress of box culverts is checked.
In order to promote efficiency of upstream and downstream migration of fishes, this study has developed a combined fishway of herring-bone bottom baffle type and brush type fishways. The results obtained are as follows : 1. In a channel with constant incline, the velocity of current generally shows a distinct tendency of acceleration as it goes down the stream. But in the hydraulic experiment of herring-bone bottom baffle type fishway, the velocity reached its maximum only at 0.4m/sec, and it tended to be stable without any acceleration. 2. The velocity in the brush type fishway showed a distinct tendency of acceleration as the discharge increased. But its greatest velocity was only 0.3m/sec, and its velocity change according to the discharge increase was only 0.15m/sec at maximum. 3. The maximum velocity in the combined type fishway was less than half of the blast speed of the poorest swimmer, the juvenile eel with 90mm of body length. So any species of fishes are supposed to be able to migrate upstream from the estuary through this combined type fishway. 4. The field experiment of upstream migration showed that the combined type fishway can promote efficiency of upstream and downstream migration of any species of fishes.
In the present study, a PIV measurement and image processing technique were applied in order to investigate the flow characteristics in the gas injected liquid bath. The circulation of liquid was induced by upward bubble flow. Due to the centrifugal force, the flow was well developed near both wall sides than in the center of a bath. The vortex flow irregularly repeated generation and disappearance which helped to accelerate the mixing process. The bubble rise velocity in the bottom region was relatively lower than in the upper region because the energy generated by bubbles' behavior in the region near the nozzle was almost converted into kinetic energy But bubble rise velocity increases with the increase of the axial distance since kinetic energy of rising bubbles is added to buoyancy force. In conclusion, the flow increased bubble rise velocity and the flow of the bottom region became more active.
This study measures the change of ice flow velocity of David Glacier, one of the fast-moving glaciers in East Antarctica that drains through Drygalski Ice Tongue. In order to effectively observe the rapid flow velocity, we applied the offset tracking technique to Sentinel-1A SAR images obtained from 2016 to 2020 with 36-day temporal baseline. The resulting velocity maps were averaged and the two relatively fast points (A1 and A2) were selected for further time-series analysis. The flow velocity increased during the Antarctic summer (around December to March) over the four years' observation period probably due to the ice surface melting and reduced friction on the ice bottom. Bedmap2 showed that the fast flow velocities at A1 and A2 are associated with a sharp decrease in the ice surface and bottom elevation so that ice volumetric cross-section narrows down and the crevasses are being created on the ice surface. The local maxima in standard deviation of ice velocity, S1 and S2, showed random temporal fluctuation due to the rotational ice swirls causing error in offset tracking method. It is suggested that more robust offset tracking method is necessary to incorporate rotational motion.
A steady, strong southward flow was observed in the lower layer beneath the Tsushima Warm Current in the deepest trough of the Korea Strait. Known as the Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW), this bottom current had a mean velocity of 24 cm/s and temperatures below 8–10℃. The direction of the bottom current was highly stable due to the topographic effects of the elongated trough. To determine the path of the southward bottom current, ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) data from 14 stations between 1999 and 2005 were examined. Persistent southward flows with average speeds of 4–10 cm/s were observed at only three places to the north of the strait where the bottom depths were 100–124 m. The collected data suggest a possible course of the southward bottom current along the southeast Korean coast before entering the deep trough of the Strait.

This report is researched on the cause and mechanism of soil erosion in comparison among Kwangnung, Mt. Kaya, Mt. Chili, and Mt. Soorak by physical and chemical analyses of their for- est soils. Clay, silt, and fine sand of Mt. Soorak are far less than those of Mt. Chili, Mt. Kaya, and Kwangnung area while coarse sand is very high level. The clay ratio of soil at Mt. Soorak is the most high level in comparison with that of other area. Denudation at Mt. Soorak, therefore, is cause of erosion by the result of transportation of soil particles. The eroding velocity increase for larger particle size and stronger cohesion between soil particles. Very fine sand, silt, and clay can be present in suspension near the bottom and the size of the particles in suspension depends upon the velocity of the current near the bottom and the roughness of the bottom. Key words: Theoretical analyses, Soil erosion and conservation, Forest soils.
A study, using potential water wave theory, is conducted on the oblique water wave motion over two fixed submerged rectangular blocks (breakwaters) placed over a finite step bottom. We have considered infinite and semi-infinite fluid domains. In both domains, the Fourier expansion method is employed to obtain the velocity potentials explicitly in terms of the infinite Fourier series. The unknown coefficients appearing in the velocity potentials are determined by the eigenfunction expansion matching method at the interfaces. The derived velocity potentials are used to compute the hydrodynamic horizontal and vertical forces acting on the submerged blocks for different values of block thickness, gap spacing between the two blocks, and submergence depth of the upper block from the mean free surface. In addition, the wave load on the vertical wall is computed in the case of the semi-infinite fluid domain for different values of blocks width and the incident wave angle. It is observed that the amplitudes of hydrodynamic forces are negligible for larger values of the wavenumber. Furthermore, the upper block experiences a higher hydrodynamic force than the lower block, regardless of the gap spacing, submergence depth, and block thickness.
Scour in the downstream of hydraulic structures such as apron induces to collapse due to abruptly increasing rainfall and discharge in streams and reaches. This is because the forcible jet from overflowing is not sufficiently dissipated by existing energy dissipators, and it continues to sweep the bed materials during flood events. In this study, a second stilling basin was proposed as a countermeasure and the energy dissipation efficiency of this structure was analyzed using 3D-dimensional numerical analysis. First, results from previous research and hydraulic tests were used to verify the accuracy of the numerical model. It showed that the second stilling basin played a definite role in reducing the bottom velocity, comparing with diminishing the energy dissipation when numerical tests were conducted under scaled field conditions in Korea. This means that the second stilling basin can be a countermeasure against scour in downstream. If more efficiency analysis of the second stilling basin would be performed in terms of energy dissipator for various types of hydraulic jump, it would be an alternative solution to scouring issues.
This study discusses the interacting with deep water waves approaching from deep water based on the linear wave theory and steep sloping sea bottom floor by the numerical procedure. The results of particular interest are particle velocity and acceleration in x, y, z direction wave height amplification factor reflection coefficient and dimensionless pressure distribution on the steep sloping bottom with respect to the various incident wave angle. The wave loads relative to various bottom slopes, incident wave angles and wave periods on submerged breakwater and pipe are represented in comparison with mild sloping bottom the wave load parameters on the steep sloping bottom seemed to be influenced by variation of incident wave angle. In general the particle velocities and accelerations in x, y, z directions on the steep sloping bottom represented larger value or about two than those on the mild sloping bottom according to incident wave angle. However, the wave height amplification factors did not show distinct difference, but the slight variation with respect to the various incident angle showed on mild sloping bottom. The reflection coefficient increased with respect to increase of the incident angle on the steep sloping bottom the results also indicate that the very steep sloping beach produces a rather substantial amount of reflection as we expected. No significant variation of wave pressure was shown on the steep sloping bottom but it represented a certain amount of variation on the mild sloping bottom according to the various incident wave angle. The analysis at the OTEC site also showed similar results.
