An antimicrobial peptide producing bacterium, Bacillus subtilis A405, was screened and identified among 700 of antagonistic bacteria. The heat-resistant antimicrobial peptide, AMP-405, was purified from the broth culture of B. subtilis A405 through $20{\sim}40%$ ammonium sulfate precipitation and ultrafiltration. The AMP-405 exhibited strong antimicrobial activities against Botrytis cinerea, Cercospora sp., Fusarium oxysporum, Penicillium digitatum, Celletotrichum gloeosporioides, Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium ultimum, Pyricularia oryzae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp. and Candida albicans. The molecular weight of the peptide was about 3.0 kDa determined by SDS-PAGE, Native-PAGE and Tris-Tricine gradient electrophoresis, and composed of 9 kinds of amino acid such as aspartic acid, glycine, serine, glutamine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, proline, tyrocine. To determine the efficiency of AMP-405 as a potential maintenance of fruits freshness, cherry tomato was srored at $25^{\circ}C$ for 2 weeks after treatment with $50{\mu}g/ml$ of AMP-405 and $10^{5}$ spores/ml of Botrytis cinerea simultaneously. Treatment with AMP-405 resulted in significantly less infection by Botrytis cinerea, than the treatment with tap water as a control.
An antagonistic bacteria, Bacillus licheniformis Nl strain which effectively inhibited mycelial growth of gray mold rot pathogen, Botrytis cinerea was isolated from the rhizosphere of perilla crop. Powder soy formulation by B. lichentfomis Nl strain as a biocontrol agent was developed far the first time and estimated its control effect on perilla leaves in this study. First of all, far the mass production of antifungal metabolites of B. lichentfomis Nl strain in flask liquid culture, the most effective carbon and nitrogen source were selected as glucose and tryp-tone, respectively, For the formulation, vegetative biomass of B. licheniformis Nl strain from 5-day-old liquid culture in nutrient broth added glucose and tryptone was mixed with soy flour, rice flour glucose, FeSo$_4$~7$H_2O$, and MnCl$_2$. 4$H_2O$, and dried and pulverized. In plastic house test, powder soy formulation effectually controlled gray mold rot as the control value of 93.1 %, was more effective than chemical fungicide, benomyl showing the control value of 86.1%. Thus, development of powder soy formulation of B. lichentfomis Nl will aid large-scale application of biological control in field trials.
Botanical antimicrobial agent-grapefruit seed extract mixture (BAAG) have an unknown compounds which exhibit the antibiotic activities aganist microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. We have examined the effects of BAAG on the physiological function of Botrytis cinerea which was isolated from necrotic lesions of decayed fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, grapes, tomatoes, and red peppers during storage. In the results of enzymatic activities related to the energetic metabolism there was no inhibitory effect of BAAG on the activities of several enzymes in vitro including glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase, while there was inhibitory effect of BAAG on the activities of hexokinase and succinate dehydrogenase. O-nitrophenyl-$\beta$-D-galactopyranoside(ONPG), the artificial substrate of $\beta$-galactosidase was hydrolyzed in the presence of BAAG, indicating that the membrane was pertubated by the BAAG. From the results we suggested that the antibiotic activity of BAAG is due to the change of membrane permeability of the cell. BAAG was fractionated and purified by silica gel and sephadex column chromatography. Among active fractions two peaks were identified as naringin and limonin when they were analyzed by by NMR and Fast atomic bombardment.

This study were carried out to identify pathogens and determine the seasonal occurrence and chemical control of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) diseases from 2000 to 2002 in Gyengbuk province, Korea. Major diseases of safflower were, anthracnose caused by Colletotricum acutatum in open field, and gray mold by Botrytis cinerea in rain sheltered plastic house. Other diseases occurred were powdery mildew caused by Sphaerotheca fuliginea, collar rot by Sclerotium rolfsii, leaf spot by Alternaria carthami and A. alternata, rust by Puccinia carthami, root-rot and stem-rot by Phytophthora cactorum, root-rot and wilt by Fusarium oxysporum and damping-off by Pythium ultimum. Seasonal occurrence of anthracnose on safflower has begun from late April, and increased until harvesting, especially rapid increased after rainfall during stem elongation season that is from May to June. In open fields, maximum incidence of anthracnose was 67 % in late July. But in rain-sheltered plastic house, it was very low, about 5% in July. Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea was most important disease in rain-sheltered plastic house cultivation. Maximum incidence of gray mold on floral head was 27.4%, whereas other diseases occurred below 1 %. In the test of the chemical control of the safflower anthracnose, metiram WP, carbendazim$.$kasugamycin WP and iminoctadintris$.$thiram WP were the highest controlling chemicals. In chemical control of gray mold, iminoctadintris$.$thiram WP, fluazinam WP and iprodion WP showed highest controlling effects.

The plant defence activator, Acibenzolar-S-methyl [benzo (1,2,3) thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid-S-methyl ester, ASM] was assayed on tomato seedlings for its ability to induce resistance against Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of gray mold in tomato. Pre-treatment of plants with ASM reduced the severity of the disease as well as the growth of the mycelium in plants. In ASM treated plants, reduction in disease severity (up to 55%) was correlated with suppression of mycelia growth (up to 46.5%) during the time course of infection. In plants treated with ASM, activities of peroxidase were determined as markers of resistance. Applications of ASM induced Progressive and significant increase of the enzyme in locally treated tissues. Such responses were expressed earlier and with a much higher magnitude when ASM-treated seedlings were challenged with the pathogen, thus providing support to the concept that a signal produced by the pathogen is essential for triggering enhanced synthesis and accumulation of the enzymes. No such activities were observed in water-treated control plants. Therefore, the slower symptom development and reduction in mycelium growth in ASM treated plants might be due to the increase in activity of oxidative and antioxidative protection systems in plants.
A series of N-phenyl-O-phenylthionocarbamate derivatives were synthesized and determinated fungicidal activities in vitro against gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) and capsicum phytophthora blight (Phytophthora capsici) which showed resistance and sensitivity to benomyl and metalaxyl as systemic fungicides, respectively. The structure-activity relationship (SAR) was investigated by Free-Wilson analysis method and Hansch method. From the basis on the findings, the N-phenyl(X) groups had more contributions than O-phenyl(Y) groups did and ortho-substituents on the N-phenyl group showed high fungicidal activities. Especially, 4-cyano substituent, 2 as X-group showed 50% inhibition($pI_{50}=5.50$) of hyphae growth at 0.8ppm against resistance P. capsici (RPC) And hydroxyl substituents, 12 and 23 displayed the highest fungicidal activity against resistant B. cinerea (RBC), sensitive B. cinerea (SBC), and sensitive P. capsici (SPC). Antifungal activities of SPC were dependent upon molar refractivity (MR) constant and those of others relied on hydrophobic parameters (${\sigma}$ and logP). For increasing fungicidal activity against RPC and SBC, the optimum values of the sigma (${\sigma}$) and field(F) constants as electron withdrawing groups were 0.32 and 0.18, respectively.
Methanol extracts from 51 fruits were tested for their fungicidal activities against six phytopathogenic fungi in a greenhouse. The efficacy varied with both the plant pathogen and fruit species used. At 10 and 5 mg/pot, methanol extracts of Poncirus trifoliata peel and seed gave over 80% control values against Pyricularia grisea, and strong fungicidal activities against Rhizoctonia solani were showed from the extracts of Citrus paradisi peel and Punica granatum leaf. In a test with Botrytis cinerea at 5 mg/pot, the extracts of C. sinensis seed and D. kaki leaf produced potent fungicidal activities, and the extracts of C. crenata peel and leaf, Ch. sinensis seed, P. trifoliata peel, and Z. jujuba leaf had strong fungicidal activities. At 5 mg/pot, strong fungicidal activities were produced in the extracts of P. trifoliata peel and seed against Phytophthora infestans and in the extracts of P. ussriensis var. macrostipes fruit and seed, C. crenata peel, C. crenata leaf, C. paradisi peel, P. trifoliata peel, P. granatum peel, and Z. jujuba leaf against Puccinia recondita. In a test with E. graminis, potent activities at 10 mg/pot were produced from the extracts of Ch. sinensis seed, C. sinensis seed, P. trifoliata leaf, P. ussriensis var. macrostipes fruit and seed, and Vitis vinifera seed. In the control effect of seven extracts against B. cinerea strains resistant to carbendazim, procymidone, and diethofencarb, extracts of C. crenata peel and leaf, Ch. sinensis seed, and P. trifoliata peel were highly effective against all strains of B. cinerea. Furthermore, potent fungicidal activities were produced from the extracts of C. sinensis seed and D. kaki leaf against the SSR, SRR, and RRS, and Z. jujuba leaf against the SSR and RRS strains. As a naturally occurring fungicide, these fruit-derived materials could be useful as new fungicidal products against phytopathogenic fungi.
This study was conducted to identify optimum ripening condition for kiwifruits (Actinidia deliciosa) to prevent postharvest fruit rots caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diaporthe actinidiae and Botrytis cinerea. The optimum temperatures for mycelial growth of B. dothidea, D. actinidiae and B. cinerea were $26{\sim}35^{\circ}C$, $26{\sim}29^{\circ}C$ and $20{\sim}26^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the incidence was closely related with the temperature. Although kiwifruits ripened faster at higher temperatures, the rates of diseased fruits increased with the rates of ripened fruits increased. Optimum conditions for ripening of kiwifruit were 20-day at 17C.
Crude extract of Coptis japonica root-stem was evaluated for antifungal activity against Phytophthora capsici, Fusarium oxysporum, Colletotrichum dematium, Colletotrichum truncatum, Botrytis cinerea, Botryosphaeria dothidea and Alternaria porri, and antifungal active compound from the extract was identified. In addition, the usefulness of the extract for some plants disease control was investigated. Crude extract of C. japonica root-stem exhibited antifungal activity against P. capsici, F. oxysporum, C. dematium, B. cinerea, B. dothidea and A. porri. Antifungal activity of the substance isolated from C. japonica root-stem was similar to a standard chemical berberine-Cl. Red-pepper fruit rot, sesame stem rot and welsh-onion alternaria leaf spot were effectively controlled by the crude extract of C. japonica root-stem. Phytotoxicity was not observed in the red-pepper and welsh-onion leaves and red-pepper and strawberry fruits with exogenous foliage application of the crude extract. Seeds germination and radicle growth of red-pepper and sesame were inhibited by the crude extract of C. japonica root-stem. 4.24g of yellowish compound per 100g of C. japonica root-stem was obtained. The compound was identified as berberine-Cl by HPLC.

QD LED has an ideal light source for growing crops and can also be used to control plant pathogenic microorganisms. The mycelial growth inhibition effect of QD LED light on Rhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora drechsleri, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Sclerotinia minor, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum, Pectobacterium carotovorum, and Xanthomonas campestris were investigated. According to the results, BLUE (450 nm) light, suppressed S. sclerotiorum by 16.7% at 50 cm height from the light source, and 94.1% mycelial growth at 30 cm height. Mycelial growth of Sclerotinia minor was inhibited by 80.4% at 50 cm height and 36.3% at 50 cm height in B. cinerea. S. minor, and B. cinerea was inhibited by 100% mycelial growth at a height of 30 cm from the light source. At 15 cm height, all three pathogens (B. cinerea, S. minor, and S. sclerotiorum) was inhibited by 100%. QD RED (M1) and QD RED (M2) light suppressed mycelial growth of S. minor and B. cinerea by 100% at 30 cm and 15 cm height from the light source. For S. sclerotiorum, QD RED (M1) and QD RED (M2) showed 75.2% and 100% inhibition, respectively. Further experiment was conducted to know the suppression effect of lights after inoculating the fungal pathogens on lettuce crop. According to the results, QD RED (M2) suppressed the S. sclerotiorum by 59.9%. In addition, Blue (450 nm), QD RED (M1), and QD RED (M2) light reduce the infestation by 59.9%. In case of B. cinerea, disease reduction was found 84% by BLUE (450 nm) light. Results suggest that the growth inhibition of mycelium increases by Quantum dot LED light.
