Diaporthe eleutharrhenae sp. nov. Associated with a Critically Endangered Liana in China

  • A new fungus isolated from the leaves of Eleutharrhena macrocarpa in southern Yunnan, China is described using morphological and molecular evidence. Phylogenetic trees based on the combined nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS), translation elongation factor-1α (TEF1), and β-tubulin gene (TUB2) sequences showed that Diaporthe eleutharrhenae sp. nov. is sister to Diaporthe chinensis N.I. de Silva, Lumyong & K.D. Hyde and morphologically differs in shorter alpha conidia (5-8.5× 1.5-2 ㎛) and the presence of beta conidia. This study also resolves a nomenclatural problem, as two taxa were published using the same name. To avoid confusion, the unrelated D. chinensis H. Dong, J. W. Xia & X. G. Zhang is here renamed as D. dongii (H. Dong, J. W. Xia & X. G. Zhang) S. J. Song & Landrein, sp. nov. in honor of the author that described this species. Study and description of fungi associated with threatened tropical species could help to understand their ecology as well as the potential spread of fungi onto cultivated crop species.

A Taxonomic Reappraisal of Ceramium fastigiatum Harvey (Rhodophyta, Ceramiaceae) (홍조 Ceramium fastigiatum Harvey의 분류학적 재검토)

  • Because Ceramium fastigiatum Harvey (1834) is a later homonym of C. fastigiatum Roth (1806), a quite different plant from the former, it becomes illegitimate and must be rejected under the Article 64 of International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. For this reason, we suggest to give a new name, Ceramium fastigiramosum Boo et Lee, to the former species, keeping the original specific epithet‘fastigiatum’. The morphology of vegetative and reproductive structures is re-examined. The life history is confirmed as a Polysiphonia-type in laboratory culture.

Etymological Study of Species in Scientific Names of Landscape Plants. (조경식물의 학명에서 종명의 어원 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the linguistic origin of the species manes of landscape plants in order to help students understand the physical characteristics of the plants through the botanical names. This study includes the plants that are possible to use as landscape material as well as both the native and foreign plants that are already used. Name of Species of Scientific name in Landscape plant be derived from region or nations of habitat, botanist, plant explors, and their sponser, and plant form and number of leaves or flowers, character or ingredient of plants and shape of stem, tree crown form. In this paper, about 300 species(contains varieties, formas) are interpreted into etymological meanings.

First report of Dryopteris namegatae and reexamination of D. hangchowensis (Dryopteridaceae) from Korea

  • One newly recorded species, Dryopteris namegatae, sect. Hirtipedes, was collected in forests in Jeju-do. Dryopteris namegatae (vernacular name: 'Tam-ra-top-ji-ne-go-sa-ri') was distinguished from other Korean congeners of sect. Hirtipedes of the genus Dryopteris by having stiff black scales on stipe and rachis, less narrowed base of lamina, and adaxial surface of pinna immersed along veins. Dryopteris hangchowensis ('Gak-si-top-ji-ne-go-sa-ri', new local name), recorded without any comments and description, was reexamined with similar taxa and was distinguished by smaller plants, brilliant leaves, many prominent fimbriate blackish scales on stipe and rachis, long-pointed apex of lamina and pinna, halfway-lobed pinna, and narrowest pinna. Descriptions and illustrations of the two species and their photographs in the habitat are provided along with a key to the species of sect. Hirtipedes of Dryopteris in Korea.

  • Traditional drugs(herbal and animal drugs) of Korea, China and Japan have developed essentially from the same origin, since the traditional medicine of three countries has been originated from ancient China. Due to different geographical locations and discrepancy of plant resources of the traditional drugs, some divergency in terms of systematic botany in traditional drug materials has appeared in the three countries. Present report aims to survey traditional herbal drugs that have been called same traditional names in three countries, but they are actually different with respect to systematic botanical view-point. The official drug compendia(pharmacopoeia and natural drug standards) of three countries were subject to examination. Survey was conducted by the following categories. Traditional drugs were listed under same name, however, 1) they belong to different genus; 7 traditional herbal drugs were listed. 2) they belong to same genus, but different species; 24 traditional herbal drugs were found. 3) a variety of related species are used; 15 traditional drugs were listed. 4) actually same plant, but taxonomical name is differently called and/or different parts of plant are used; 10 traditional drugs were counted. 5) animal drugs belong to one of the above categories; 7 traditional animal drugs were found. Total 63 traditional drugs(herbal and animal) were found to comprise different taxonomical names when the official drug compendia of Korea, China and Japan were examined.

Distribution of Carex kamagariensis K. Okamoto in Korea (좀목포사초(Carex kamagariensis K. Okamoto)의 분포)

  • Carex kamagariensis K. Okamoto was found in throughout the nation. This species is distinguished from other related taxa in Carex sect. Mitratae by pistillate scales with a long arista and achenes constricted above in the middle. A new Korean name, 'Jom-mok-po-sa-cho', is based on its small size and floral character similarity to C. genkaiensis. In this study, a description, illustrations and habitat photos of the species are provided. The key of its related species is also provided.

A Critical Review of 'Reconsideration about Nomenclature of Herbs Listed in the Korean Pharmacopoeia' ('대한민국약전에 수재된 식물성 한약재의 학명에 대한 재고' 의 논평)

  • Objectives : 'Reconsideration about Nomenclature of Herbs Listed in the Korean Pharmacopoeia' was published by Doh and Lee with absolute misconception of nomenclature. A critical review of Doh and Lee's paper is given, to correct the confused the concept of nomenclature and to provide proper scientific name for taxa which are discussed. Methods : This paper discusses the proper usage, as mandated by the International Code of Nomenclature. Adherence to the rules described in this paper should reduce the present confusion in the nomenclature of scientific names listed in the Korean Pharmacopoeia. Results : Although Doh and Lee proposed four categories to correct the scientific names of the Korean Pharmacopoeia using available botanical databases, they failed to show how nomenclatural concepts are applicable due to misconception of legitimacy and the confusion about synonym. From a nomenclatural perspective, 'accepted name' or 'recommended name' is a subjective term which used to be employed for convenience in a certain databases or working group without nomenclatural meaning. Doh and Lee also pointed out the standardization of author citation. However, they missed the importance of author citation error such as basionym or validating authors. Conclusions : Doh and Lee were not able to solve nomenclatural problems of the Korea Pharmacopoeia due to lack of clarity on the nomenclature code. We strongly recommend that KFDA has to commence extensive nomenclatural review for the next revision of Korea Pharmacopoeia.

Consideration of the name of a thing appearing in the Jangseogak Archives "Gugpung(국풍)" (장서각 소장 『국풍』에 나타나는 물명 고찰)

  • In order to examine the characteristics of the name of a thing appearing in the "Gugpung(국풍)", it was compared with the name of a thing in "The Korean annotation of the Classic of Odes(시경언해)" We have examined the reason why the names of things in "The Korean annotation of the Classic of Odes(시경언해)" and "Gugpung(국풍)" appear differently in terms of the difference between the purposes of compiling the two books and reflecting the changes in language. "The Korean annotation of the Classic of Odes(시경언해)" does not provide a proper language for the names of flora and fauna that can be easily seen in the collective term of plants or animals or in everyday life. However, in the "Gugpung (국풍)", they also presented their own words. We found the reason for the purpose of compiling the "Gugpung(국풍)". "Gugpung(국풍)" is a book made for women's education. Therefore "Gugpung(국풍)" was made not only to learn the contents but also to learn Chinese character contained in the contents. Consequently, unlike the "The Korean annotation of the Classic of Odes(시경언해)", most of the names of the Korean things are presented Although the names of the native language of "Gugpung(국풍)" and "The Korean annotation of the Classic of Odes(시경언해)" are consistent with each other, many cases have been found that appear differently. In many cases, they reflected the change of the history of the Korean language in the early 17th century, when the "The Korean annotation of the Classic of Odes(시경언해)" was published, and in the early 19th century, when the "Gugpung(국풍)" wind was written.

Corydalis caudata (Lam.) Pers. (Fumariaceae): An unrecorded species of corydalis in Korea (수염현호색 (현호색과): 국내 미기록 식물)

  • We report an unrecorded species of Corydalis sect. Corydalis (Fumariaceae), C. caudata (Lam.) Pers., that have been found in the central part of Korea. This species is easily recognized by its bearded calyx, upwardly curved spur, and multi-branched characteristics. We named it 'Soo-yeom-hyeon-ho-saek' as korean common name.

  • Wind holes or air holes, from which cool air blows out during the summer, but mild air comes out during the winter, have provided the phytogeographically important refugia for cryophilous or cold-loving boreal flora during the Holocene period. At present, wind holes are serving as a faraway disjunctive habitat for Pleistocene relict glacial floristic elements, and present an invaluable information to reconstruct the natural history. Present work aims to collate the nationwide distribution and relevant DB on the potential wind holes of Korea based upon media and literature sources, along with geographical informations, such as place name, topographic map, environmental geographical information, flora, monitoring data of Korea National Arboretum, and field survey data. Geographical information on sixty nine wind hole sites have compiled and analyzed on the basis of flora and presence of fossilized periglacial landforms, such as talus, block field, and block stream, and sixteen sites have thereafter carefully selected and scrutinized through field surveys. To maintain a sustainability of wind hole ecosystem, including their original landform, micro-meteorological phenomena and plant community therein as a refugia or habitat for relict plant species of Pleistocene glacial period, appropriate restrictions and preservation measures are required.
