Objectives : The cancer incidence and cancer burden is increasing. In addition, the use of botanical agents in cancer care is increasing. This article aims to review a research strategy for botanical agents. Methods : The clinical studies of anticancer botanical agents and the papers about clinical research methodology of botanical agents were reviewed. Results : In phase I study, safety confirmation, optimal dose determination and drug interaction study are important. Most botanical agents have low toxicity and some have non-monotone dose response. Therefore, dose-response curve must be evaluated separately from the dose-toxicity curve to determine optimal dose. Although anticancer botanical agents can't shrink tumor size rapidly, they do extend survival. So, in phase II study, response should be evaluated by the survival. Conclusions : Clinical research of botanical agents in cancer is different from traditional methods and strategies. Considering the characteristics of botanical agents and experimental mechanism is necessary in conducting botanical based clinical trials.
Current status and quality administration of botanical products in America which has one of the biggest market need to be analyzed for the internationalization of oriental medicine. In this study, current status of botanical products as dietary supplements was analyzed and quality adminstration by United States Pharmacopoeia and National Formulary(USP-NF) was compared with The Korea Pharmacopoeia and botanical drug standard collection(KP), Even though the number of botanical products in USP-NF is small, it is rapidly increasing and more detailed compared with KP. Especially, reference standard compound should be determined for each botanical drugs, and more detailed standard for other items should be established in KP considering international trends. Though the history of botanical drugs in America is short, its annual market is about 3.2 billion dollar, so American administration system should be examined carefully for the internationalization of oriental medicine and related industry.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the prescription intention of Korean medicine doctors on botanical drug. Methods : The subjects in this study were 340 Korean medicine doctors in Korean medical institutions, on whom a survey was conducted from July 1 to August 31, 2014.Results : The factors that affected the prescription decision making of the Korean medicine doctors were drug superiority, level of Interest, Recognition, marketing of sales associates of pharmaceutical companies and satisfaction with information provided by those companies. When the internal consistency of the variables was measured, that was above 0.8.Conclusions : Accordingly, well-planned education and promotion efforts are required to encourage Korean medicine doctors to put more prescription intention in botanical drug. This study had some limitations : First, the subjects were selected in a manner to allow for the convenience of this researcher, and the findings might not be generalizable. Second, there was a problem with the time for the study in that there were quite fierce disputes on botanical drug at that time. Third, the majority of the subjects run their own hospitals, and the number of them was small. So it's not possible for them to represent every Korean medicine doctor.
The Korean folk medicine has been used to cure several diseases among the peoples and the folk remedy has so deep root. But the botanical origin of the folk medicine has been no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. It was investigated from March, 1986 to June, 1993 in order to verify its origin by describing botanical name, commercial name, and scientific name.
Berberis aristata (family Berberidaceae), known as 'Daruharidra' in Ayurvedic system of medicine, is an important medicinal plant used extensively for treating a variety of ailments in various systems of indigenous medicine. Being an important medicinal plant it is being adulterated and in the absence of any pharmacognostic information it is very difficult to check the adulteration. The present study was therefore, carried out to provide the requisite pharmacognostic details. Morphological, anatomical and phytochemical aspects of B. aristata were carried out. Diagnostic features of B. aristata root were identified and characterized from the above investigations and presented in the present communication. Some of the diagnostic features of the root drug noted from the anatomical study are patches of pericyclic fibre, pitted sclerieds, berberine containing cells and heterocyclic medullary rays. HPTLC analysis showed three distinct bands of which berberine was identified as the major constituents. The $R_f$. value of other bands was also calculated.
Korean folk medicine 'Koaeng I Bab' has been used to cure hemorrhoid, boil and dermatopathy and as an antidote. The botanical origin of the crude drug has not been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Koaeng I Bab', the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves of Oxalis species growing in Korea, i.e. O. acetosella, O. acetosella var. purpurascens, O. corniculata, O. obtriangulata were studied. As the result, the botanical origin of 'Koaeng I Bab' has been proved to be O. corniculata and O. acetosella var. purpurascens.
Natural product drugs, or botanical drugs, are drugs composed of natural substances which have constituents with healthenhancing or medicinal activities. In Korea, government-led projects brought attention to botanical drugs invigorating domestic botanical drug industry. Foreign markets, as well, are growing bigger as the significance of botanical drugs stood out. To follow along with the tendency, Korea puts a lot of effort on developing botanical drugs suitable for global market. However, standards for approving drug sales vary by countries. And also, thorough standardization, certification, clinical studies and data of these will be required as well as data confirming safety and effectiveness. Meanwhile, as an international exchange in botanical drug market continues, the importance of plant resources was emphasized. Thus countries' ownership of domestic natural resources became vital. Not only establishing a systematic method to secure domestic plant resources, but also cooperation with other countries on sharing natural resources is essential to procure natural resources effectively. Korea started to show visible results with botanical drugs, and asthma/COPD treatment made out of speedwell is one example. Sufficient investment and government's active support for basic infrastructure for global botanical drugs will bring Korea to much higher level of botanical drug development.
Objectives : Sik-bang-pung (植防風, Peucedani Japonici Radix), the root of Peucedanum japonicum Thunberg (Apiaceae), has often been used as a substitute for Bang-pung (防風, Saposhnikoviae Radix) in the past, but recently it is treated as a counterfeit of Bang-pung or a kind of 'Jeonho (Peucedani Radix)'. Hence, it is crucial to investigate the origin of herbal name to provide appropriate usage of Sik-bang-pung. Methods : The classic and contemporary literatures regarding to the herbal medicines and botanical nomenclature were searched to find the herbal and botanical origins of Bang-pung and Sik-bang-pung, respectively. Result : The botanical descriptions of Bang-pung (防風) were consistent throughout the classic literatures and its botanical species was determined as Saposhnikovia divaricata Schischkin (Apiaceae) in the compendium. In the literatures published in the Joseon Dynasty, 'Byeong-pung-na-mul' was recorded as the medicinal plant of Bang-pung, but its botanical species could not be confirmed. In Japanese literatures, Bang-gyu (防葵) was confirmed as Mok-dan-bang-pung (牡丹防風); botan-bōfū in Japanese), which was determined as the herbal name of the root of 'Gaet-girum-namul (P. japonicum)' in Korea during the period of Japanese rule. The roots of Gaet-girum-namul was medicinally named as Mok-dan-bang-pung (牡丹防風), Sik-bang-pung (植防風), or San-bang-pung (山防風) in the past decades in Korea. Among them, Sik-bang-pung might be chosen as the herbal name, but its nominal origin could not be found. Conclusions : The herbal name, Sik-bang-pung, was presumably affected by Japanese botanical nomenclature. Although its medicinal application is still controversial, Sik-bang-pung should be considered an independent herbal medicine.
An overview of the history of the evolution of health practice in the United States. The development of selected laws regulating the marketing of botanical commodities and recent efforts to standardize them. Some consideration is given to the clinical testing and clinical use of botanical commodities.
Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb. (FamilyZingeberaceae), commonly known as 'pink and blue giner' is widely used in Indian system of medicine since time immemorial. The plant is found well in wild habitat and cultivated in southern India. The plant is distinguished by red corolla lobes and ferruginous or greenish-blue rhizome. Rhizoma is used medicinally as anti-diarrheal, anti-fungal; external use as astringent for wounds. A detailed pharmacognostic evaluation of its rhizome showed total ash 6.1%, acid insoluble ash 1.20%, alcohol soluble extractives 3.70% , water soluble extractives 14.50%, sugar 20.93%, starch 41.85%, and tannins 0.68%. Oh hydro distillation, the rhizomes and sessile tubers yielded 0.17% oil.
