  • Objective: To evaluate the effects of contamination by either blood or a hemostatic agent on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic buttons. Methods: We used 45 freshly extracted, non-carious, impacted third molars that were divided into 3 groups of 15. Each tooth was etched with 37% phosphoric acid gel for 30 s. Human blood or the blood stopper agent was applied to the tooth surface in groups I and II, respectively. Group III teeth were untreated (controls). Orthodontic buttons were bonded to the teeth using light-curing composite resin. After bonding, the SBS of the button was determined using a Universal testing machine. Any adhesive remaining after debonding was assessed and scored according to the modified adhesive remnant index (ARI). ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey's test was used to determine significant differences in SBS and Fisher's exact test, to determine significant differences in ARI scores among groups. Results: ANOVA indicated a significant difference between groups (p < 0.001). The highest SBS values were measured in group III ($10.73{\pm}0.96$ MPa). The SBS values for teeth in groups I and II were significantly lower than that of group III (p < 0.001). The lowest SBS values were observed in group I teeth ($4.17{\pm}1.11$ MPa) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Contamination of tooth surfaces with either blood or hemostatic agent significantly decreased the SBS of orthodontic buttons. When the contamination risk is high, it is recommended to use the blood stopper agent when bonding orthodontic buttons on impacted teeth.

  • This study was peformed to evaluate the interfacial shear bond strength of base (direct and indirect) and repair composites with aging and surface treatment methods. Direct composite resin specimens ($Charisma^{\circledR}$, Heraeus Kulzer, Germany) were aged for 5 min, 1 hour, 24 hours, and 1 week in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water before surface treatment, and then divided into five groups Group 1, grinding; Group 2, grinding and application of bonding agent, Group 3, grinding, etching with 37% phosphoric acid for 30sec, and application of bonding agent, Group 4, grinding, etching with 37% phosphoric acid for 30sec, silane treatment, and application of bonding agent ; Group 5, grinding, etching with 4% hydrofluoric acid for 30sec. silane treatment, and application of bonding agent. Indirect composite resin specimens ($Artglass^{\circledR}$, Heraeus Kulzer, Germany) were aged for 1 week in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water and divided into seven groups Group 1 - Group 5, equal to Charisma specimens; Group 6, grinding, etching with 37% phosphoric acid for 60sec, silane treatment, and application of bonding agent; Group7, grinding, etching with 4% hydrofluoric acid for 60 sec, silane treatment, and application of bond-ing agent. The repair material($Charisma^{\circledR}$) was then added on the center of the surface (5 mm in diameter. 5 mm in height). The shear bond strength was tested and the data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the Student- Newman-Keuls test. The following conclusions were drawn. 1 The shear bond strength of $Charisma^{\circledR}$ specimens aged for 1 hour was significantly higher in Group 2 and Group 5 than in Group 1 (p<0.05), and that of $Charisma^{\circledR}$ specimens aged for 1 week was signifi-cantly higher in Group 3 and Group 5 than in Group 1 (p<0.05). No significant difference was found in the bond strength of specimens aged for 5 min and 24 hours. 2. In Group 2 of the $Charisma^{\circledR}$ specimens, there was significant difference between the bond strength of 24 hours and that of 1 week (p<0.05). 3. In Group 4 of the $Charisma^{\circledR}$ specimens, the shear bond strength of specimens aged for 24 hours was significantly higher than the others(p<0.05) 4. There was no significant difference between the shear bond strength of the $Artglass^{\circledR}$ specimens, 5. Most of the $Charisma^{\circledR}$ specimens showed cohesive fractures. Artglass^{\circledR}$ specimens that were etched with acid (phosphoric or hydrofluoric) for 30 sec showed more cohesive fractures.

  • High energy ball milling is employed to produce iron matrix- multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced composite. The damage caused to MWCNT due to harsh ball milling condition and its influence on interfacial bonding is studied. Different amount of MWCNT is used to find the optimal percentage of MWCNT for avoidance of the formation of chemical reaction product at the matrix - reinforcement interface. Effect of process control agent is assessed by the use of different materials for the purpose. It is observed that ethanol as a process control agent (PCA) causes degradation of MWCNT reinforcements after milling for two hours whereas solid stearic acid used as process control agent, allows satisfactory conservation of MWCNT structure. It is further noted that at a high MWCNT content (~ 2wt.%), high energy ball milling leads to reaction of iron and carbon and forms iron carbide (cementite) at the iron-MWCNT interface. At low percentage of MWCNT, dissolution of carbon in iron takes place and the amount of reinforcement in iron matrix composite becomes negligibly small. However, under the present ball milling condition (ball to metal ratio~ 6:1 and 200 rpm vial speed) iron-1wt.% MWCNT composite of good interfacial bonding can retain the tubular structure of reinforcing MWCNT.

  • Optical fiber sensors are by now broadly accepted as an innovative and reliable device for structural health monitoring, to be used either embedded into or bonded on structures. The accuracy of the strain measurement achievable by optical fiber sensors is critically dependent on the characteristics of the bonding of the various interface layers involved in the sensor bonding/embedding (structure material and gluing agent, fiber coating and gluing agent, fiber coating and fiber core). In fact, the signal of the bonded/embedded optical fiber sensor must correspond to the strain experienced by the monitored structure, but the quality of each involved interface can affect the strain transfer. This paper faces the characterization, carried on by both mechanical tests and morphological analysis, of the strain transfer function resulting with epoxidic and vinylester gluing agent on polyimide and acrylate coated optical fibers.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength between the composite resin and light - cured glass ionomer cement base / liners treated by the several methods. The light - cured glass ionomer cement(Vitrebond / Cavalite) were injected into cavites prepared in acrylic plates. One hundred and twenty specimens were uniformly prepared and devided into 3 groups. For the first group, primer was not applied to glass ionomer cement. For the second group, no application of primer was undertaken and light - curing procedure to uncured glass ionomer cement surface which was covered by bonding agent was undertaken. After bonding composite resin to light - cured glass ionomer surface, the specimens, were stored in $37^{\circ}C$, 100% humidity for 1 hour. The following results were obtained : 1. The omission of application of a primer did not produce a significantly poorer bond strength. 2. Light - curing technique to uncured glass ionomer cement which was covered by bonding agent did not produce a significantly poorer bonding strength. 3. The bond strength of Cavalite to composite resin was significantly higher than that of Vitrebond. 4. There was no significant difference between two different types of composite materials(Silux-Plus / Herculite XR) when it was applied to bond to glass ionomer cement.

  • In case of esthetic restorative procedure with zirconia restoration, we have to use resin cement because of not only just for retention but also esthetic reason. In such a clinical situation, we have to consider two bonding interfaces, one is tooth surface to resin cement and the other is zirconia surface to resin cement. There is well established bonding protocol between tooth surface to resin cement, but bonding protocol of zirconia surface to resin cement is still controversial. In scientific point of view, there are two mechanism for bonding of zirconia restoration.. One is mechanical retention and the other is chemical adhesion. However, we have three different options for bonding of zirconia restoration in clinical situation; 1) Tribo-chemical coating with silica and silane coupling agent 2) Zirconia primer with phosphate chemistry 3) Self-adhesive resin cement with phosphate chemistry.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dentin bonding agents on the bond strength of composite resin restorations in case of applying the dentin bonding agents to acid etched enamel surfaces. Freshly extracted 364 bovine anterior teeth were selected as a adherents. 320 enamel specimens were divided into two groups(unetched group (1) and etched group (2) for testing the shear bond strength, 40 specimens were used for the hardness testing, and 4 specimens of rest were to observe the resin-tag formation into etched enamel surfaces. All surfaces of enamel specimens were polished with 320~1500 SiC paper under continuous running water. In Group (1), 100 enamel specimens were polished and unetched. 220 polished enamel specimens in Group (2) were etched with 37 % phosphoric acid solution for 60 seconds, washed with water for 20 seconds, and dried with a light air pressure for 60 seconds. Three kinds of dentin bonding agents(Gluma, Prisma, Scotchbond 2) were evaluated the effect on the bond strength to conditioned enamel surfaces. Shear bond strengths were measured on the three cases such as a coating of primer only, a coating of sealer only, and a sequential coating of primer and sealer to acid etched enamel surfaces were compared with the bond strengths measured by the coating of enamel bonding agent followed by the bonding of composite resin (Photo clearfil bright, Kuraray, Japan) to unetched and acid etched enamel surfaces. In addition, the hardness tested on the adhesive fractured surface between composite resin enamel as a mean of evaluation of a factor whether the mechanical bond strengths were affected and the penetration of dentin bonding agents into etched enamel surfaces was also observed. Bond strengths were measured using the method of shear bond strength by a universal testing machine (Instron-4467, USA), statistical test were applied to the results using a one way analysis variance(ANOVA), and hardness was measured by the Vicker's Hardness Tester(MHT-i, Matsuzawa, Japan) and the penetration of the resins were observed by the SEM (Hitachi, S-2300, Japan). The following conclusions were drawn; 1. Enamel bonding agent showed to affect the improvement of bond strength of composite resin to enamel surface both unetched and etched. 2. Dentin bonding agents could be resulted in increase of bond strength to unetched enamel surface, but there were no statistical significances. 3. Bond strengths to etched enamel surface were significantly decreased with a coating of dentin primer only. 4. Coating of sealer only and coating of primer and sealer noticed the similar bond strengths of composite resin to etched enamel using the enamel bonding agents. 5. The applying method proved to be more effective than the kinds of dentin bonding agents on the bond strength of composite resin to etched enamel than the kind of dentin. 6. Vicker's hardness numbers of dentin bonding agents were lower than that of composite resin, but the degree of penetration of dentin bonding agents into etched enamel surfaces was excellent.
