This study investigated the open hole tensile (OHT) properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites and compared them to bolt joint tensile (BJT) properties. The net nominal modulus and strength (1376 MPa) were found to be higher than the gross nominal strength (1041 MPa), likely due to increasing hole size. The OHT and BJT specimens exhibited similar stiffness, as expected without bolt rotation causing secondary bending. OHT specimens experienced a sharp drop in stress indicating unstable crack propagation, delamination, and catastrophic failure. BJT specimens failed through shear out on the bolt side and bearing failure on the nut side, involving fiber kinking, matrix splitting, and delamination, resulting in lower strength compared to OHT specimens. The strength retention of carbon fiber/epoxy composites with open holes was 66%. Delamination initiation at the hole's edge caused a reduction in the stress concentration factor. Filling the hole with a bolt suppressed this relieving mechanism, leading to lower strength in BJT specimens compared to OHT specimens. Bolt joint efficiency was calculated as 15%. The reduction in strength in bolted joints was attributed to fiber-matrix splitting and delamination, aligning with Hart Smith's bolted joint efficiency diagram. These findings contribute to materials selection and structural reliability estimation for carbon fiber/epoxy composites. They highlight the behavior of open hole and bolt joint configurations under tensile loading, providing valuable insights for engineering applications.

To overcome many defects such as the high product cost, large energy consumption, and big space capacity in conventional mechanical machining, the miniaturization of machine tool and micro factory systems has been envisioned recently. The object of this paper is to research the effect of dynamic characteristic parameters in bolted-joint beams, which is widely applied to the joining of mechanical structures in order to identify structural system characteristics and to predict dynamic behavior according to scale-down from macro to micro system as the development of micro/meso-scale machine tool and micro factories. Modal parameters such as the natural frequency, damping ratio, and mode shape from modal testing and dynamic characteristics from finite element analysis are extracted with all 12 test beam models by materials, by size, and by joining condition, and then the results obtained by both methods are compared.
As a type of semi-rigid connection, the top and seat angle connections are popular in current structures owing to their good cyclic performance and simple erection. However, their stiffness and load bearing capacity are relatively insufficient. This study proposes two strengthening methods to further increase the stiffness and strength of bolted-angle joints while maintaining satisfactory energy dissipation capacity (EDC) and ductility. Cyclic loading tests were conducted on six joint specimens with different strengthened angle components. Based on the test results, the influence of the following important factors on the cyclic behavior of steel joint specimens was investigated: the position of the rib stiffeners (edge rib stiffeners and middle rib stiffener), steel strength grade of rib stiffeners (Q345 and Q690), and additional stiffeners or not. In addition, the finite element models of these specimens were built and validated through a comparison of experimental and numerical results. The stiffness and bearing capacity of the bolted-angle joints could be improved significantly by utilizing the novel strengthened joints proposed in this study. Moreover, this can be achieved with almost no increase in the amount of steel required, and the EDC of this joint could also satisfy the requirements of seismic codes from various countries.
Press fitting method for joining of a hybrid tube and steel ring with small teeth for automotive aluminum/composite hybrid propeller shaft was devised to improve reliability and to reduce manufacturing cost, compared to other joining methods such as an adhesively bonded joint, bolted joint or welded joint. To obtain high strength of the press fit joint, an optimal design method for the teeth was devised with respect to number and shape of the steel teeth. Torsional static, fatigue tests and finite element analysis of the press fit joint were performed with respect to experimental variables. The developed optimal design method predicted well the static torque capability and failure mode of the press fit joint. Also, it provided design guide line of press fit joint for improving torsional static and fatigue characteristics.

Composite-to-aluminum joins were tested to get failure loads and modes for three types of joins; adhesive bonding, bolt fastening, and adhesive-bolt hybrid joining. Film type adhesive FM73 and paste type adhesive Cytec EA9394S were used for aluminum and composite bonding to make a double-lap joint. A digital microscope camcorder was used to monitor the failure initiation and propagation. It was found that the hybrid joining is an effective method to strengthen the joint when the mechanical fastening is stronger than the bonding as in the case of using the paste type adhesive. On the contrary, when the strength of the bolted joint is lower than the strength of the bonded joint as in the joint with the film type adhesive, the bolt joining contribute little to the hybrid joint strength.
A study on predicting the joint strength of mechanically fastened woven glass/epoxy composite has been performed. An experimental and numerical study were carried out to determine the characteristic length and joint strength of composite joint. The characteristic lengths for tension and compression were determined from the tensile and compressive test with a hole respectively. The characteristic lengths were evaluated by applying the point stress failure criterion to a specimen containing a hole at the center subjected to tensile loading and a specimen containing a half circular notch at the center subjected to compressive load. The joint strength was evaluated by the Tsai-Wu and Yamada-Sun failure criterion on the characteristic curve. The predicted results of the joint strength were compared with experimental results.
Precast concrete structures are erected from individual prefabricated components, which are assembled on-site using different types of connections. In the present design of these structures, beam-to-column connections are assumed pin jointed. Bolted billet beam to-column connections have been used in the precast concrete industry for many years. They have many advantages over other jointing methods in component production, quality control, transportation and assembly. However, there is currently limited information concerning their detailed structural behaviour under vertical loadings. The experimental work has involved the determination of moment-relative rotation relationships for semi-rigid precast concrete connections in full-scale connection tests. The study reported in this paper was undertaken to clarify the behaviour of such connections under symmetrical vertical loadings. A series of full-scale tests was performed on sample column for which the column geometry and bolt arrangements conformed to successful commercial practice. Proprietary hollow core floor slabs were tied to the beams by 2T25 tensile reinforcing bars, which also provide the in-plane continuity across the connections. The contribution of the floor strength and stiffness to the flexural capacity of the joint is currently neglected in the design process for precast concrete frames. The flexural strength of the connections in the double-sided tests was at least 0.93 times the predicted moment of resistance of the composite beam and slab. The secant stiffness of the connections ranged from 0.94 to 1.94 times the flexural stiffness of the attached beam. In general, the double-sided connections were found to be more suited to a semi-rigid design approach than the single sided ones. The behaviour of double sided bolted billet connection test results are presented in this paper. The behaviour of single sided bolted billet connection test results is the subject of another paper.

This paper presents rational modeling and analysis method for complex structures with various structural joints. For modeling of structural joint, a general modeling technique is newly proposed by flexibility influence coefficient and inverse of flexibility matrix and static reduction concept which is applied to the retained DOFs(degrees of freedom) of detailed finite element model of struction joints. By this method, joint model with contact surface. which can not be reduced by the general reduction theory such as Guyan reduction theory ,can be reduced effectively. And in this method, the nonlinearity of the contact surface can be linearized within a proper range and the boundary effects of joint region can be excluded. Using the proposed method, screwed joint, glued joint and bolted joint are analyzed. And the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experiments.

Since a device such as a rocket motor requires very high reliability, a reasonable reliability design process is essential. However, Korea has implemented a design method for applying a safety factor to each component. In classic reliability analysis, input variables such as mean and standard deviation, used in the limit state function, are treated as deterministic values. Because the mean and standard deviation are determined by a small amount of data, this approach could lead to inaccurate results. In this study, reliability analysis is performed for bolted joints and o-ring seals, and the Bayesian approach is used to statistically estimate the input variables. The estimated variables and failure probability, calculated by the reliability analysis, are derived in the form of probability distributions.
