Simplified model to study the dynamic behaviour of a bolted joint and its self loosening

  • Bolted joints are essential elements of mechanical structures and metal constructions. Although their static behaviour is fairly well known, their dynamic behaviour due to shocks and vibrations has been less studied, because of the large size of the finite element models needed for a detailed simulation. This work presents four different simplified models suitable for studying the dynamic behaviour of an elementary bolted joint. Three of them include contact elements to allow sliding of the screw head and the nut on the assembled parts, and the last one allows rotation between screw and nut. A penalty approach based on the Coulomb friction model is used to model contact. The results show that these models effectively represent the dynamic behaviour, with different accuracy depending on the model details. The last model simulates the self loosening of a bolt subjected to transversal vibrations.

An Experimental study on the Bolted Moment Connection between H-Beam and CFT Column (CFT기둥과 H-형강보의 볼트 접합부에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the prototypes of bolted end plate moment connection between CFT column and H-beam sections. Nine different types of bolt are designed in this study. The shapes of those bolt are straight. bent, hooked or stud-type. The end plate moment connection between CFT column and H-beam sections which are jointed by those bolts are studied experimentally to compare their performances. The simple beam bending tests are carried out to investigate the structural behavior of beam-to-column connections. The experimental results show that some of the bolted end plate connection types have quite good performance in the structural behavior but still have a lot of week points to be solved for the efficiency of construction.

  • Most of the mechanical structures use bolting or spot welding for the whole structure. In recent years, bolting & rivets are used rather than the welding due to reassembly and repair. Analysis of bolted joints is so complicate that many conditions must be considered such as pre-load and contact, etc.. Bolted joint analysis is done by theoretical, experimental & numerical methods. However, numerical analysis in the bolted joint is used because the contact and stress in the joints are changed due to the pre-load. In this study, we analysis the slip and the deformation of the contact area in the joint depending on the pre-load and find the optimized bolting condition.

Experimental study on a new type of assembly bolted end-plate connection

  • The bolted end-plate beam-column connections have been widely used in steel structure and composite structure because of its excellent seismic performance. In this paper, the end-plate bolted connection is applied in the concrete structure, A new-type of fabricated beam-column connections with end-plates is presented, and steel plate hoop is used to replace stirrups in the node core area. To study the seismic behavior of the joint, seven specimens are tested by pseudo-static test. The experimental results show that the new type of assembly node has good ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Besides, under the restraint effect of the high-strength stirrup, the width of the web crack is effectively controlled. In addition, based on the analysis of the factors affecting the shear capacity of the node core area, the formula of shear capacity of the core area of the node is proposed, and the theoretical values of the formula are consistent with the experimental value.

Finite Element Analysis for the Failure Mode of Welded Flange-Bolted Web Connection (Welded Flange-Bolted Web 강접합부의 파괴모드 추정을 위한 유한요소해석)

  • In spite of 6.8 magnitude and the neighborhood of the epicenter, the steel moment frame survived after Northridge earthquake without collapse or casualties. However, following investigation revealed that there were severe damages at the column-weld interface of welded flange-bolted web (WFBW) steel moment connection, which was believed to be economic and safe from earthquakes based on experience and past tests. In this paper, this unexpected brittle fracture of the steel moment connection is explored using linear elastic fracture mechanics and post-Northridge tests. A method to predict the brittle fracture strength of the steel moment connection is proposed. Using this method, the failure mode of the WFBW connection and reduced beam section (RBS) connection are presented.

Bearing Strength of Glass Fiber Reinforced Glulam Bolted Connection

  • To study the bearing characteristics of glass fiber reinforced glulam for structural design, bearing strength tests were performed. Bearing loads were applied in the direction parallel to the grains, and the holes were prepared in such a way that the bolts would bear and support all the layers. The yield bearing strengths of the glass fiber reinforced glulam were found to be similar to those of the non-reinforced glulam, and were almost constant regardless of increases in bolt diameter. The ratio of the experimental yield bearing strength to the estimated bearing strength according to the suggested equation of the Korea Building Code and National Design Specification was 0.91~1.03. For the non-reinforced glulam and the sheet glass fiber reinforced plastic glulam, the maximum bearing load was measured according to the splitting fracture of specimens under bolt. The textile glass fiber reinforced glulam underwent only an embedding failure caused by the bearing load. The failure mode of reinforced glulam according to bearing load will influence the failure behavior of bolted connection, and estimating the shear yield strength of the bolted connection of the reinforced glulam is necessary, not only by using the bearing strength characteristics but also using the fracture toughness of the reinforced glulam.

Analysis of the Behavior of Bolt Jointed Wood Connections by Applying Semi-Rigid Theory

  • Attempts were made to analyze the behavior of single and multiple-bolted connections through theoretical methods such as European yield theory, empirical approaching method, and semi-rigid theory instead of many experimental methods that have been actually inefficient and non-economical. In the case of a single-bolted connection, if accurate characteristic values of a material could be guaranteed, it would be more convenient and economical to perform the behavior analysis using a model based on the semi-rigid theory, instead of the existing complex yield model, or the empirical formula which produces errors, giving different results from the actual ones. If the variables of equation determining the load and deformation could be appropriately controlled, the analytical method in conjunction with a semi-rigid theory could be effectively applied to obtain the desirably predicted value, considering that the appropriate solution could be derived through a simpler equation using a less difficult method compared to the existing yield model. It is concluded that analytical method with semi-rigid theory can be used in the behavior analysis of bolted connection because our developed method showed excellent analysis ability of behavior until number of bolt is two. Although our analytical method has the disadvantage that the number of bolt is limited to two, it is concluded that it has the advantage than numerical method which complicated and time-consuming.

A piecewise linear transverse shear transfer model for bolted side-plated beams

  • The performance of bolted side-plated (BSP) beams is affected by the degree of transverse partial interaction, which is a result of the interfacial slip caused by transverse shear transfer between the bolted steel plates and the reinforced concrete beams. However, explicit formulae for the transverse shear transfer profile have yet to be derived. In this paper, a simplified piecewise linear shear transfer model was proposed based on force superposition principle and simplification of shear transfer profiles derived from a previous numerical study. The magnitude of shear transfer was determined by force equilibrium and displacement compatibility condition. A set of design formulae for BSP beams under several basic load cases was also derived. Then the model was verified by test results. A worked example was also provided to illustrate the application of the proposed design formulae. This paper sheds some light on the shear force transfer mechanism of anchor bolts in BSP beams, and offers a practical method to evaluate the influence of transverse partial interaction in strengthening design.

Static and Fatigue Fracture Assessment of Hybrid Composite Joint for the Tilting Car Body (틸팅차량용 차체의 Hybrid 복합재 접합체결부의 정적 및 피로 파괴 평가)

  • Fatigue fracture behavior of a hybrid bolted joint was evaluated in comparison to the case of static fracture. Two kinds of specimens were fabricated for the mechanical tests; a hybrid bolted joint specimen for the shear test and a hybrid joint part specimen applied in the real tilting car body for the bending test. Characteristic fracture behaviors of those specimens under cyclic toads were obviously different from the case under static loads. For the hybrid bolted joint specimen, static shear loading caused the fracture of the bolt body itself in a pure shear mode, whereas cyclic shear loading brought about the fracture at the site of local tensile stress concentration. For the hybrid joint part specimen, static bend loading caused the shear deformation and fracture in the honeycomb core region, while cyclic bend loading did the delamination along the interface between composite skin and honeycomb core layers as well as the fracture of welded joint part. Experimental results obtained by static and fatigue tests were reflected in modifications of design parameters of the hybrid joint structure in the real tilting car body.

Behaviour and design of high-strength steel beam-to-column joints

  • This paper presents a finite element model for predicting the behaviour of high-strength steel bolted beam-to-column joints under monotonic loading. The developed numerical model considers the effects of material nonlinearities and geometric nonlinearities. The accuracy of the developed model is examined by comparing the predicted results with independent experimental results. It is demonstrated that the proposed model accurately predicts the ultimate flexural resistances and moment-rotation curves for high-strength steel bolted beam-to-column joints. Mechanical performance of three joint configurations with various design details is examined. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the effects of key design parameters on the behaviour of bolted beam-to-column joints with double-extended endplates. The plastic flexural capacities of the beam-to-column joints from the experimental programme and numerical analysis are compared with the current codes of practice. It is found that the initial stiffness and plastic flexural resistance of the high-strength steel beam-to-column joints are overestimated. Proper modifications need to be conducted to ensure the current analytical method can be safely used for the bolted beam-to-column joints with high-performance materials.
