A Study on Contact Deformation of Automotive Door Weatherstrip Using Non-linear Finite Element Method (비선형 유한요소법을 이용한 자동차 도어 웨더스트립의 접촉변형에 관한 연구)

  • In vehicle door system, weatherstrip seals protect passengers form noise, dust, rain and wind out of the vehicle. The higher efficient a weatherstrip is, the more durable it is in contact between the door and body frame. In this study, nonlinear finite element(FE) analysis is performed to obtain cauchy-stresses, displacements and reaction forces of the weatherstrip. Mechanical properties of the weatherstrip is obtained by uniaxial tension test. The MARC which is a commercial software for the nonlinear analysis of a flexible FE model is used. Twenty-one cases of the FE model are developed by using Ogden-foam formulation. In the results of nonlinear FE analysis, the most valuable deformation of the weatherstrip occurred when displacement control value reaches 7.2mm. Severe deformation is observed as the displacement control value become more increased. When the weatherstrip is designed, it would be considered that the displacement value of the weatherstrip has to be less than 7.2mm.

  • A new method of optimal blank shape design using the initial nodal velocity (INOV) has been proposed for the drawings of arbitrary shaped cups. With the given information of tool shape and the final product shape, corresponding initial blank shape has been found from the motion of boundary nodes. Although the sensitivity method, the past work of the present authors, has been proved to be excellent method to find optimal blank shapes, the method has a problem that a couple of deformation analysis is required at each design step and it also exhibits an abnormal behaviors in the rigid body rotation prevailing region. In the present method INOV, only a single deformation analysis per each design stage is required. Drawings of practical products as well as oil-pan, have been chosen as the examples. At every case the optimal blank shapes have been obtained only after a few times of modification without predetermined deformation path. The deformed shape with predicted optimal blank almost coincides with the target shape at every case. Through the investigation the INOV is found to be very effective in the arbitrary shaped drawing process design.

  • Initial thermo-elastic and steady state creep deformation of a rotating functionally graded simple blade is studied using first-order shear deformation theory. A variable thickness model for cantilever beam has been considered. The blade geometry and loading are defined as functions of length so that one can define his own blade profile and loading using any arbitrary function. The blade is subjected to a transverse distributed load, an inertia body force due to rotation and a distributed temperature field due to a thermal gradient between the tip and the root. All mechanical and thermal properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be longitudinally variable based on the volume fraction of reinforcement. The creep behaviour is modelled by Norton's law. Considering creep strains in stress strain relation, Prandtl-Reuss relations, Norton' law and effective stress relation differential equation in term of effective creep strain is established. This differential equation is solved numerically. By effective creep strain, steady state stresses and deflections are obtained. It is concluded that reinforcement particle size and form of distribution of reinforcement has significant effect on the steady state creep behavior of the blade.

Flutter study of flapwise bend-twist coupled composite wind turbine blades

  • Bending-twisting coupling induced in big composite wind turbine blades is one of the passive control mechanisms which is exploited to mitigate loads incurred due to deformation of the blades. In the present study, flutter characteristics of bend-twist coupled blades, designed for load alleviation in wind turbine systems, are investigated by time-domain analysis. For this purpose, a baseline full GFRP blade, a bend-twist coupled full GFRP blade, and a hybrid GFRP and CFRP bend-twist coupled blade is designed for load reduction purpose for a 5 MW wind turbine model that is set up in the wind turbine multi-body dynamic code PHATAS. For the study of flutter characteristics of the blades, an over-speed analysis of the wind turbine system is performed without using any blade control and applying slowly increasing wind velocity. A detailed procedure of obtaining the flutter wind and rotational speeds from the time responses of the rotational speed of the rotor, flapwise and torsional deformation of the blade tip, and angle of attack and lift coefficient of the tip section of the blade is explained. Results show that flutter wind and rotational speeds of bend-twist coupled blades are lower than the flutter wind and rotational speeds of the baseline blade mainly due to the kinematic coupling between the bending and torsional deformation in bend-twist coupled blades.

A Study on the Dynamic Analysis for Flexible Robotic Arms (유연 로보트팔의 동특성 해석에 관한 연구)

  • In the design and operation of robitic arm with flexible links, the equation of motion are required to exactly model the interaction between rigid body motion and elastic motion and to be formulated efficientlyl. In this paper, the flexible link is represented by applying the D-H rigid link representation method to measure the elestic deformation. And the equations of motion of robotic arm, which are configured by the generalized coordinates of elastic and rigid degrees of freedom, are formulated from the principle of virtual power. Dynamic characteristics due to elastic deformation of each link are obtained by using F. E. M to model complex shaped link acurately and by eliminating elastic modes of higher order that do not largely affect motion to reduce the number of elastic degrees of freedom. Also presented is the result of simulation of flexible robotic arms whose joints are controlled by direct or PD control.

  • Side collisions (or side crash) account for 51.6% of all car to car accidents occurred in 2010. It is necessary to analyze those vehicles' structure deformation and passengers' injuries in the side collisions. A moving barrier (950kg) is currently used in the KNCAP side impact test. However, in order to enhance a passengers' safety in the side collisions, we introduce an AE-MDB (1500kg) which provides more severe conditions for this test. In this study, the test results using both barriers are compared and analyzed.

  • In this paper, a massless link model transmitting external forces is developed to achieve the numerical efficiency in simulation of vehicle suspension systems. Forces acting on links are resolved and transmitted to attached points with a quasi-static assumption. Also, a theoretical derivation and computer implementation of a massless link with bushing elements are proposed. In the massless link with bushing elements, one end is connected to the adjacent body with bushings and the other end is connected with a spherical joint. The deformation of a massless link with bushing elements is theoretically determined by minimizing the potential energy function with quasi-static equilibrium assumption at each time step. Several simulations with a full vehicle model are carried out to compare the efficiency of the developed massless link component. From the results, it is concluded that the proposed approach can reduce the computational time considerably.

  • In this study, the control of the free surface deformation of a magnetic fluid for the change in electromagnetic force is discussed. The free surface of magnetic fluid is formed by the balance of surface force, gravity, pressure difference, magnetic normal pressure and magnetic body force. Magnetic fluid in characteristics of fluid adjusted to the opposite direction of the gravity direction. Thus, the device of a magnetic fluid proposed the complete zero-leakage sealing, oscillator for surface control, boundary layer control, MHD, flow control, flow using magnetic levitation system and surface actuator. This study show the deformation of surface rise due to the intensity of the magnetic field and possibility of two-dimensional control of magnetic fluid through the feedback data of hall sensor.

  • It is important to have exact informations on the real contact mechanism between spheres and rough plates under various normal loads, sphere diameters and combined surface roughnesses. Most previous papers have proposed the questions of the errors which might be incurred when the Hertzian theory is used to calculated the contact deformation and the contact pressure of practical higher pair. So, this study investigates the real contact deformation between a rough sphere and a rough plate by three experimental methods far from any assumptions and theorems. The soot coating method among them is used successfully. Accordingly, this study presents the simple dimensionless parameter to predict such errors to occur in the design of high pair members and to govern the real mechanism of two-body higher pair.
