To assess the usefulness of tongue inspection for evaluating the Pattern identification in oriental medicine, we observed stroke patient's tongue and tongue coat and compared it with Pattern identification. The test group was composed of 85 acute stroke stage patients(within 72 hours of onset). Subjects were randomly selected from stroke patients admitted in the KyungHee University, Hospital of Oriental Medicine from December 1 1998 to June 30 1999. We took pictures of patient's tongue and tongue coat within 72hours from onset and checked Pattern identification at the same time. Tongues colored pale rose or red greatly outnumbered other colors. Tongue shape tended to be prickly or fissured, and tongue condition tended to be unflexible or deviated. Regarding tongue coat color, there were great amounts of yellow or clark yellow tongue coats, which were moist, thick or greasy in substance. The red tongue was significantly related to Fire-heat and deficiency of Yin syndrome, while faint white tongue to Damp syndrome(P=0.006). In terms of tongue coat, thin coat was related to Wind and Fire-heat syndromes, thick coat to Damp and Blood stasis syndrome, respectively (P=0.002). In conclusion, we thought that tongue inspection could be a useful Oriental medicine diagnosis in stroke.

This study was performed to investigate using of herbal medicine based on pattern identification of symptoms, such as Qi deficiency pattern, Yin deficiency pattern, Phlegm -dampness pattern, Static blood pattern, Fire-heat pattern. These patterns settled by Korean Standard Differentiation of the Symptoms and Signs for Stroke in 2005. This study was done with 177 patients in Daejeon University Oriental Medical Hospital in the period of November 2006 to July 2007. Among the five types of pattern identification, Phlegm -dampness pattern showed significantly high frequency especially in 3 weeks after stroke. The sort of herbal medicine was 43 and Dodamhwalhyoel-tang(26.61%), Sunhwanki 1 hobang(14.52%), Banhabaekchulcheonma-tang(4.84%), Ansinchongnoi-tang(4.84%), Chongryuldodam-tang(4.03%) were most frequently used. Especially Dodamhwalhyoel-tang showed significantly high frequency in 2 weeks after stroke. Based on these results, it is suggested that more practical Korean Standard Differentiation of the Symptoms and Signs for Stroke would be established through continuous clinical studies by giving weight on relationship between herbal medicine and pattern identification.
Many types of cancer, current therapy other than surgery and/or radiotherapy was of only limited efficacy. At the basic chinese traditional medicine(TCM) there was increased understanding of the additional basic and clinical neoplasm treatment research. The metastasis and recurrence of neoplasm was the basis of yudu(餘毒) on remained neoplasm cell and stagnation of blood, thermotoxo, phlegm, asthenia of healthy enerngy, stagnation of vital energy. The principles therapy of neoplasm on metastasis and recurrence was based on knowledge of the method of support the healthy energy and strengthen the body resistance, promote blood circulation to remove blood stasis, clear away heat and toxic materials, dissipate phlegm and disperse the accumulation of evils, regulate vital energy and disperse the depressed vital energy. But the major clinical features of neoplasm was to be considered in developing a treatment plan include (1) distinguish between clinical and pathologic staging - acute and chronic, (2) classification of pathologic pattern, and (3) distinction of body situation : for examples asthenia - sthenia etc. It was most important to distinguish between supporting the healthy and eliminating the evil factors and to treat differently at the root and the branch cause of a neoplasm. This paper's results indicate that identification and effective use of TCM medicines inhibited netastasis and decreased recurrence and then we were able to expect increasing survival rate.

Objectives The aim of this study was to develop a standard tool of pattern identification for Knee Osteoarthritis, which will be applied to clinical research. Methods The advisor committee for this study was organized by 11 panel of experts (Korean Rehabilitation Medicine professors, Acupuncture and Moxibustion professors belonging to Korean Medicine colleges, Principal Researcher of Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine, Doctor of Korean medicine). The pattern identifications and symptoms for this tool were extracted from published Korean and Chinese literature. Through the discussion among internal experts and consultation from advisors, the Instrument on Pattern Identifications for Knee Osteoarthritis was developed. Results 1) Five pattern identifications (The Wind, Chill, and Moisture, The Moist-Heat, Blood Stasis, Yang Deficiency of Spleen and Kidney, Yin Deficiency of Liver and Kidney) were set for the tool. 2) The mean weights which represent the importance of each symptom and scored on a hundred-point scale was obtained. 3) The Instrument on Pattern Identifications for Knee Osteoarthritis was designed in the self-reporting format composed of 46 questions. Conclusions The Instrument on Pattern Identifications for Knee Osteoarthritis was created through this study. Though this study is not proved about validity, reliability, the instrument of pattern identification for Knee Osteoarthritis is meaningful and expected to be applied to the subsequent.

Common cold occurs frequently and occupies an important position in medical treatment however obvious treatment is not suggested. There has been no agreement of pattern identification for common cold in oriental medicine. The purpose of this study is to develop a standard instrument of pattern identification for common cold which will be applied to clinical research. The items and structure of the instrument were based on review of published literature. The advisor committee on this study was organized by 9 oriental respiratory internal medicine professors of 11 oriental medical colleges nationwide. The experts attended 3 consultation meetings and discussed developing the instrument, and we also took professional advices by e-mail. The results were as follows; First, we divided the pattern identification of common cold into nine pattern: Wind-cold type, Wind-heat type, Contain summerheat type, Contain dampness type, Qi deficiency type, Blood deficiency type, Yang deficiency type, Yin deficiency type, Influenza. Second, we got the mean weights to each symptom of nine pattern identification which had been scored on a 5-point scale - ranging from 0 to 4 by the 9 experts. Third, we made out the Korean instrument of the pattern identification for common cold. It was composed self reporting questionnaire and researcher reporting questionnaire. Though this study is not proved about validity, reliability, the instrument of pattern identification for common cold is meaningful and expected to be applied to the subsequent research. And also, we hope to improve the instrument and make up for this study through various research and discussion.
Background: Blood stasis (BS) is commonly used for pattern identification in traumatic injuries, including traffic accidents (TAs). Various studies have identified the efficacy of Korean medicine treatments for TA patients, but studies focusing on the BS-based herbal medicine (BSHM), including Tongdo-san (TDS), are rare. Methods: This was a single-center, prospective observational study, conducted from August 24th, 2018 to December 27th, 2018, which included 40 TA patients. Participants underwent routine Korean medicine treatments including acupuncture, electronic moxibustion, cupping, physical therapy, and herbal medicine. In the herbal medicine treatment, participants took BSHM with more than 3 days including taking TDS. The primary outcome measures were the scores from a 100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS) and numerical rating scale (NRS). Secondary outcome measures included scores from EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) and EQ-VAS questionnaires, the BS and cold/heat indices, and safety assessments. Results: There were significant improvements in the VAS, NRS, EQ-5D, EQ-VAS scores, and BS index after treatment. In the sub-analysis, VAS, NRS, EQ-5D, and EQ-VAS scores were higher in groups with a higher BS index. The moderate and severe BS index groups showed more improvement than the minor BS index group, and there was a significant difference in the EQ-5D scores. There was no significant differences observed in cold/heat index groups scores. Conclusion: BS is associated with TA-related symptoms. BSHM, including TDS, may significantly reduce BS, pain, and discomfort.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the interpretation of the Daeseunggi-tang(DST) in order to obtain the evidence for clinical applications. Methods and Results : We have analyzed the interpretation on the DST through translations and comparisons based on classic books about the oriental medical prescriptions. Conclusion : 1. 'Dae(大)' in DST means 'strong symptoms' or 'strong efficacy'. 'Seung(承)' in DST means 'smooth (順)', 'attach(連)' and 'serve(奉)'. 2. The main pathogenesis of DST's syndrome are heat binding(熱結)·qi stagnation(氣滯). 3. The main areas where disease pattern of DST is 'Yang brightness(陽明)'. It is also associated with 'Lesser yin (少陰)', 'Qi aspect(氣分)·Blood aspect(血分)' and 'Triple Energizer(三焦)'. 4. Laxative the Rhei Radix et Rhizoma(大黃) is sovereign medicinal(君藥) of DST, because of removing the heat binding(熱結) and the heat that spread throughout the body.

In this study, we structuralized the diagnostic indices used for pattern identification (PI) of stroke, and suggested an AHP method to obtain the weights of PI indices. AHP of the subjects under consistency ratio 0.1 showed that the critical indices for stroke PI consists of 9 for Qi-deficiency, 13 for Phlegm/dampness, 7 for blood stagnation, 12 for Yin-deficiency and 16 for Fire/heat. Furthermore, AHP analysis rendered the weights of indices of each PI that will be useful for oriental medical experts to perform objective PI.
Background : There are many korean women who have localized fat despite of they have normal or slightly over weight. The relationships of traditional diagnostic method with total body fat and body mass index had been reviewed in other study, but there is no study regarding the relationship of traditional diagnostic method and localized fat. So we designed this study to find out the relationships between localized fat and traditional diagnostic method among Korean high-school girls. Methods : This research was performed in 21 high-school girls with localized fat during April 2007. We measured body mass index, percent of body fat, waist circumference, hip circumference and means of both thigh circumference. Phlegm questionnaire, blood stasis questionnaire, cold-heat questionnaire, Korean eating attitude test-26 and questionnaire of Sasang constitution classification Ⅱ+ have been administered. Results : There were significant correlations between body mass index, percent of body fat and body size. Regardless of body mass index, they had high phlegm and heat pattern. Most of them are classified as Tae-um type person. Conclusions : High-school girls with localized fat had pattern of high phlegm, heat and characteristics of Tae-um person.

This study is aim to evaluate pulse diagnosis as indicators for classification of the pattern identifications in stroke patients. To get the clinical information, we recruited the onset 1 month stroke patients through the multicenter network which consists of 13 oriental hospitals. The clinical informations about three pairs of pulse wave form and levels of their significancy based on the case report form (CRF) were collected and their distribution in each pattern identification were analyzed. The results are as follows Fire-Heat group shows high portions of floating pulse, rapid pulse and solid pulse. Qi Defficiency group has a greater portion of deep pulse, slow pulse, deficient pulse. The well-defined character of Phlegm-Retained Fluid, Yin Defficiency, Static Blood groups cannot be explained by pulse wave form. These results show a rough relationship between the pulse diagnosis and pattern identifications of stroke therefore, further studies are required to determine the pulse diagnosis as significant indicators of stroke pattern identification.
