Anesthetized dogs were tilted from horizontal to the upright and head down position. Tilting to the upright position was followed by an increase in heart rate. In the head down position a decreased heart rate was obtained. The arterial blood pressure was decreased in the upright position and was decreased markedly in the head down position. The central venous pressure was decreased in the upright position and was markedly decreased down to the negative pressure in the head down position. The respiratory rate was slightly increased in the upright position comparing to that in the horizontal position. No remarkable changes were noted in the head down position. From the above results the following factors were discussed The decreased arterial blood pressure during the upright position was supposed to be the secondary effect from the diminished venous return that was suggested by the decreased central venous pressure. The decreased arterial blood pressure in the head down position was also supposed as the above reason as the diminished central venous pressure during the tilt. In addition the cardioinhibitory effects originated from the baroreceptors might have been operated during head down tilting. In the heart rate there was slight tachycardia in the upright position this was assumed as the abolished cardioinhibitory impulses from the baroreceptor in the upright position. On the contrary, despite of the decrease of arterial blood pressure in the head down position as well as in the upright, the bradycardia have been appeared. This was suggestive of cardioinhibitory impulses from the baroreceptors which was stretched during head down tilting. From the above findings there is a possibility of continous cardioinhibitory responses during head down tilting for this kind of the short period of 10 minutes which was chosed in this study.

Oxygen consumption and blood physiology of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (mean body weight 106.6±6.8 g, mean±SD) was investigated at salinities of 34.0 (control), 33.7, 33.3, 32.6, 31.3, 28.6, 23.1, 12.2 and 0.0 psu at 20.0℃, respectively. Stepwise salinity changes (34.0→33.7→33.3→32.6→31.3→28.6→23.1→12.2→0.0 psu) with an interval of 24 h for each salinity induced a significant (P<0.05) increase of oxygen consumption rate (OCR) in fish exposed from 31.3 to 0.0 psu compared to that of control fish. The maximum OCR was found in fish exposed to 23.1 psu, which was accompanied by 36.2% higher energy consumption than the control fish. Fish exposed to each salinity for 24 h induced a significant decrease of blood plasma Na+ in 0.0 psu and Cl- in 12.2 and 0.0 psu (P<0.05), and increase of plasma glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) in 0.0 psu compared to the control fish (P<0.05). The results of this experiment show that P. olivaceus exposed to concentrations below 31.3 psu requires more energy costs to adapt to salinity changes than 34.0 psu under our experimental conditions.

The effects of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) in rats submitted to exhaustion exercise have been studied, by measuring different enzymatic and hematological parameters in plasma and muscle. KRG powder was daily administered to 15 male Wistar rats for a period of two weeks. Another group of 15 rats with the same characteristics were administered physiological saline. Both groups were divided as follows: 5 control. 5 exercised till exhaustion and 5 recovered for 48 h after exhaustion. The following results were obtained for the groups treated with KRG in rapport to those treated with saline: - Higher endurance to running, - Increase of the osmotic resistence of red blood cells and higher presence of reticulocytes. - Lower triglyceride levels in plasma. - Increase non statistically significant of urea levels in plasma, - Lower non statistically significant hypoglycemia after exhaustion exercise. - Decrease of liver glycogen after exercise and faster recovery of the resting - level. - Protective effect on tissular damage produced by exhaustion exercise - Lower LDH activity in all studied muscles. only statistically significant in the WG.
Ulmus davidiana var. japonica Rehder (Urticales: Ulmaceae) (UD) is a tree widespread in northeast Asia. It is traditionally used for anticancer and anti-inflammatory therapy. The present study investigated the effect of an ethanol extract of UD on vascular tension and its underlying mechanism in rats. The dried root bark of UD was ground and extracted with 80% ethanol. The prepared UD extract was used in further analysis. The effect of UD on the cell viability, vasoreactivity and hemodynamics were investigated using propidium iodide staining in cultured cells, isometric tension recording and blood pressure analysis, respectively. Low dose of UD ($10{\sim}100{\mu}g/ml)$ did not affect endothelial cell viability, but high dose of UD reduced cell viability. UD induced vasorelaxation in the range of $0.1{\sim}10{\mu}g/ml$ with an $ED_{50}$ value of $2{\mu}g/ml$. UD-induced vasorelaxation was completely abolished by removal of the endothelium or by pre-treatment with L-NAME, an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase. UD inhibited calcium influx induced by phenylephrine and high $K^+$ and also completely abolished the effect of L-NAME. Intravenous injection of UD extracts (10~100 mg/kg) decreased arterial and ventricular pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, UD extracts reduced the ventricular contractility (+dP/dt) in anesthetized rats. However, UD-induced hypotensive actions were minimized in L-NAME-treated rats. Taken together, out results showed that UD induced vasorelaxation and has antihypertensive properties, which may be due the activation of nitric oxide synthase in endothelium.
Objectives : This study was done to investigate the formation process of the 'The Spleen controls the blood(脾統血)' concept, to clarify what this concept means and the mechanism of its physiology. Methods : Contents including 'Controlling blood(統血)' and 'Binding blood(攝血)' were searched and analyzed in medical classics. Previous researches were applied. Results & Conclusions : The concept of 'Controlling blood' could be defined as the control of blood movement. This means that it sends blood to where it's needed, and inhibits flow from where it's excessive. 'The Spleen controls the blood' was not used as a physiologic term in early books like Huangdineijing(黃帝內經). It was first used in the 13C, then widely after the 16C. The mechanism of 'Controlling blood' could be classified as the function of 'Production', 'Distribution', and 'Adjustment' of blood. 'Production' of blood can reduce blood fever(血熱) and blood stasis(瘀血), and prevent bleeding. 'Distribution' of blood can reduce the symptoms raised by lack of blood in the five viscera and body. 'Adjustment' of blood means maintaining homeostasis and stability of the human body. Pi can adjust blood flow and prevent blood from being imbalanced.
The brain is unique as target for drug delivery because it is an organ with the greatest blood supply, which receives about 20% of the cardiac output in humans and is highly restricted by a tight vascular barrier, the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Since the BBB forms the interface between blood and brain, the biology of the BBB plays a role in multiple disciplines other than pharmacology, physiology, pathology and neurosciences. (omitted)

We have come to a conclusion below after studying about the cause of limb hyperhidrosis through references, putting the result into practice clinically from Hyungsang remedy point of view, examining the effect of treatment. The cause of limb, palm and sole hyperhidrosis. The cause of limb hyperhidrosis is stomach heat(Yangmyung heat), weakness and coldness of stomach, moisture and heat of spleen and stomach, energy insufficiency of spleen and stomach, weakness of Yin of spleen and stomach, heat by weakness Yin meridian, unspread energy of liver, severe heat of heart, weakness of heart, shortage of blood, the functional disorder of kidney meridian and heart meridian(disposition of water ascension and fire descent), heat of blood(the functional disorder of heart) etc. The cause of palm hyperhidrosis is blood insufficiency of heart and liver or the functional disease of heart and stomach. The cause of sole hyperhidrosis is the functional disease of heart and kidney or the functional disease of kidney. Types classified by the cause of limb hyperhidrosis. The case of stomach heat, moisture and heat of spleen and stomach is found a lot in Yangmyeong and Fish Type. The case of weakness and coldness of stomach or insufficiency energy of spleen and stomach is found in Bangkwang and Ki Type, the shape of disorder of transfer and transformation of spleen and stomach. The case of severe heat of heart, the functional disorder of kidney meridian and heart meridian(disposition of water ascension and fire descent), heat of blood(the functional disorder of heart), heat by weakness of meridian of Yin is found a lot in Dam, Bird and Shin Type. Limb sweat caused by unspread energy of liver is found a lot in Horse Type. Palm sweat is found a lot in Bird or Yangmyeong Type. Sole sweat is found a lot in Fish or Taeum Type. Jeokbokryung-tang was good especially for type limb hyperhidrosis falling under the shape of the small intestines heat which conforms to the person having a short perpendicular furrow of the upper lip or lifted upper lip. Palmul-tang was good for type limb hyperhidrosis tending to having leaking liquid and humor because of the disorder of transfer of Jung, Ki, Shin, Hyul. Dossipyungwi-san and Hyangsapyungwi-san were good for type limb hyperhidrosis caused by stomach heat by food accumulation and Ki depression.
For centuries, ginseng has been used for the therapeutic purpose in oriental herb medicine. Several studies have been conducted in the past to evaluate the effect of ginseng on erythropoiesis. However the results were controversial. We therefore attempted in the present studies to evaluate the effect of ginseng on the erythropoietic activity. In one series of experiments, the recovery pattern of peripheral blood(red cell count, hemoglobin content, hematocrit and reticulocyte count) was studied in posthemorrhagic anemic rabbits. After animals were maintained with normal(control group) or 1 gm% ginseng (experimental group) diet for 2 weeks, hemorrhagic anemia was induced by withdrawing blood equivalent to 25% of the total blood volume and then changes in peripheral blood were followed for following 30 days. In other series of experiments, we studied effect of ginseng on erythrokinetics using $^{59}Fe$. $^{59}Fe(10{\sim}40\;{\mu}Ci/animal)$ was injected intravenously after animals were fed with normal (control group) or 1 gm% ginseng(experimental group) diet for 2 weeks. And radioactivities in the blood compartments were measured at appropriate intervals for 15 days. Front these various erythrokinetic parameters were estimated. Results are summarized as follows: 1) Reticulocyte count was higher in the experimental group than in the control group after 2 weeks of administration of experimental diet. During the posthemorrhagic period, the reticulocyte count increased in both the control and experimental groups, but the increase appeared much earlier in the experimental group. 2) The posthemorrhagic recoveries of hematocrit, hemoglobin content and red cell count appeared to be faster in the experimental group as compaired with the control group. 3) The half life$(T_{1/2})$ of $^{59}Fe$ in the plasma was significantly(P<0.05) shorter in the experimental group(82.6 min, N=8) than in the control group(121 min, N=6). Plasma iron turnover (PIT) of the experimental group (1.78 mg/dl/24 hr.) was approximately 4 times greater than that of the control group(0.45 mg/dl/24 hr.). 4) The maximum red cell utilization(RC-U) was 82.1% in the experimental group ana 74.5% in the control group. Red cell iron turnover(RIT) of the experimental group(1.62 mg/dl/24 hr.) was slightly higher than that of the control group(0.35 mg/dl/24 hr). 5) Erythron turnover was significantly(p<0.05) greater in the experimental group(1.27 mg/dl/24 hr.) than in the control group(0.24 mg/dl/24 hr.). Marrow transit time of the experimental group(2.05 days) tended to he faster than that of the control group(2.84 days). These results suggest that the gingseng improves the recovery of posthemorrhagic anemia and stimulates the erythropoiesis in rabbits.
This study was performed to investigate the mechanism of changes in arterial blood pressure, as a typical example of somatosympathetic reflex, induced by activation of muscular afferent nerves. Cats were anesthetized with ${\alpha}-chloraloae$ (60 mg/kg, i.p.). Afferent fibers in muscle nerve were activated by various method muscle contraction, electrical stimulation of muscle nerves, intraarterial injection of some algesic substances and noxious mechanical stimulation etc-and the evoked changes in arterial blood pressure were monitored. The effects of intravenous or direct spinal administration of morphine on the changes in arterial blood pressure induced by activation of the muscle afferent fibers were observed and also the effects of spinal lesions made in the $L1{\sim}L3$ spinal cord on them were studied to identify the ascending spinal pathways of the somatosympathetic reflexes. Followings are the results obtained. 1) The stimulation of medial gastrocnemius nerve under non-paralyzed condition with C-strength, low frequency (lower than 20 Hz) stimuli elicited a depressor response and a pressor response was elicited with C-strength, high frequency stimuli, of which the maximal response was observed at 100 Hz stimulation. 2) When the animal was paralyzed, depressor response to stimulation of the medial gastrocnemius nerve was observed with C-strength, $0.5{\sim}5Hz$ stimuli although the amplitude of the depressor response was decreased. The maximal pressor response was observed during stimulation with C-strength, $20{\sim}100Hz$ stimuli. 3) Intraarterial injection of some algesic substances induced marked pressor responses while noxious mechanical stimulation of the medial gastrocnemius muscle was not enough to elicit any significant changes (larger than 10 mmHg) in arterial blood pressure. 4) Systemically administered morphine (2 mg/kg) lowered the arterial blood pressure immediately and persistently and it was reversed by administration of naloxone. Direct spinally administered morphine did not elicit any changes. 5) The pressor response elicited by the activation of muscle afferent nerves was strengthened by systemic morphine administration while the depressor response tended to decrease. 6) Morphine administered on the spinal cord directly, decreased pressor response but did not change depressor response. From the above results it is concluded that there are separate groups of afferent nerves in the medial gastrocnemius nerve, which elicit pressor and depressor responses and the spinal ascending pathways of them are also separated from each other.
