A Case report of Hypertension Controlled with Weight-loss in Stroke Patient (단기간의 체중감량을 통한 뇌경색 환자의 고혈압 치험 1례)

  • Although hypertension doesn't kill itself, its complications can be deadly: increased risk of heart attack and stroke. So hypertension is often called the silent killer, and this is why controlled hypertension is so important. A 51 year-old female stroke patient was diagnosed with hypertension 10 years ago. Since then, though western medication have been used to control her hypertension, it was ineffective. As we know, obesity can cause high blood pressure, so we try weight-loss as alternative way to her hypertension drug. After discharge from hospital, she reduce her weight by 10kg and more by diet only. And her blood pressure became decreased steadily. As maintaining her decreased weight, her blood pressure is now relatively stable without taking any medication. In this case, we recognised that weight-loss by diet could be effective instead of taking hypertension drug for obesity patient who has high blood pressure.

The Change of Bone Mineral Density by Bisphosphonates Therapy with Calcium-Antagonists in Osteoporosis

  • Imbalance in calcium and phosphorous metabolism due to aging or menopause leads to osteoporosis. In contrast to patients with normal blood pressure, hypertensive patients have a higher loss of calcium in the urine with its attendant risk of osteoporosis. The high blood pressure is associated with the risk of bone loss and abnormalities in calcium metabolism leading to calcium loss. So we retrospectively investigated the changes of bone mineral density (BMD) which drugs can have clinical influences over osteoporosis treatments of patients with calcium-antagonists as common antihypertensive drugs and with bisphosphonates which causes a most effective inhibition of osteoclasts resorption. As a result over 70 years of age group and within bisphosphonates group, alendronate 70 mg once-weekly group showed significant increase of BMD in lumbar area. Combination group of cilnidipine and $maxmarvil^{(R)}$ showed very significant decrease of BMD. In conclusion, it is desirable that combination therapy with calcium-antagonists is used carefully in the treatment of osteoporosis with high blood pressure.

Hemostatic effect of fibrin glue for sternal marrow bleeding. (흉골 출혈에 대한 fibrin glue의 지혈 효과)

  • Bleeding from bone marrow after sternotomy for open cardiac surgery can be sometimes difficult to control and even lead to reoperation for hemostasis. A clinical comparative study was carried out to demonstrate the hemostatic effect of fibrin glue [Beriplast] for sternal marrow bleeding after sternotomy for open heart surgery. Postoperative blood loss was measured in two patient groups, group A included 19 patients operated upon from June to October 1987 and the fibrin glue was applied to the sternal marrow together with collagen fleece and group B consisted of 22 patients from January to May 1987 and only collagen fleece was applied without fibrin glue. There was no difference between two groups in age and sex distributions, coagulation state, method of extracorporeal circulation and operative management. The blood loss one hour after operation was 2.04 ml/hr/kg in group A and 3.55 ml/hr/kg in group B [P<0.001]. The most significant difference was observed during the first 4 hours after surgery with 1.34 ml/hr/kg versus 2.05 ml/hr/kg. over the following 20 hours the amount of drainage from the chest tubes was identical in both groups. Fibrin glue reduces blood loss after open heart surgery by local hemostasis at sternum. Our study has shown that local application of fibrin glue to sternal marrow is an effective method of controlling the sternal bleedings. No side effect or complication of fibrin glue was noted.

  • Recently, occurrence of alcohol-involved traffic accidents is increasing while all the accidents by violation of law except drunk driving. Traffic accidents by drunk driving has a great external cost. In detecting drunk driving, blood alcohol content Many studies reported close correlation between blood alcohol content and traffic accidents by drunk driving. The risk of traffic accidnet increases exponentially as blood alcohol content increases. To control traffic accidents by drunk driving, decide target population. Heavy drinkers are few and responsible for a small part of the loss while casual drinkers are many and responsible for a large part of the loss. Casual drinkers need to be included in the targer population for the control of traffic accident by drunk driving. Stragegies to reduce the quantity of alcohol consumed, change the pattern of drink, such as frequency of drinking, raise of perceived risk of accident need to be sought.

A Study on the Influences of Noise Induced Hearing Loss to the Blood Pressure (소음성 청력손실이 혈압에 미치는 영향에 관한 조사연구)

  • For the purpose of evaluating the effect of noise induced hearing loss on the blood pressure, a cross-sectional study was conducted in 481 manufacturing industrial workers in Pusan area consisted of 275 workers from noisier plant (over 90 dB(A), high exposed group) and 206 workers from less noisy plant (below 85 dB(A), low exposed group) from April to Decepmber in 1985. The summarized results were as follows; 1) The degree of hearing loss according to the audible frequency was most notable in 4,000 Hz. 2) The prevalence of hypertension was 14.8% in total examined subjects. And also in 40 dB(A) hearing lost workers, there was no significant difference between high exposed group as 15.5% and low exposed group as 15.8%. 3) In 3 models analyzed by multiple regression technique to obtain the complexed extents of risk factors related to the diastolic blood pressure, especially model III which contain age, body mass index, smoking, alcohol and family history of hypertension, duration of work, noise exposure level and degree of hearing loss in high exposed group was most remarkable compared to the others. 4) The most potential predictor related to the diastolic pressure in high exposed group was the degree of hearing loss. And the next were body mass index, familial history of hypertension and age in order. But in the case of low exposed group, the potential predictors were body mass index, age and familial history of hypertension.

  • The purpose of current study was to investigate the correlations of walking exercise program-induced abdominal visceral fat loss with metabolic syndrome risk factors in middle-aged women. The walking exercise program was provided at a frequency of 3 sessions, respectively, per week for a duration of 12 weeks. Then, the subjects were classified into either those whose abdominal visceral fat loss belonged to low 25 percentile (low 25% group, n=8) or those whose abdominal visceral fat loss belonged to high 25 percentile(high 25% group, n=8) based on the amount of abdominal visceral fat loss induced by the walking exercise. Metabolic syndrome risk factors(waist circumference, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, blood pressure) between groups according to the 12 weekly walking exercise program had no difference. In conclusion, the findings of the present study show that the walking exercise-induced total abdominal fat and visceral fat loss were positively relate to waist and blood pressure(SBP, DBP) and that the walking exercise-induced subcutaneous fat loss were positively relate to waist and blood pressure(SBP).

Effects of method and duration of restraint on stress hormones and meat quality in broiler chickens with different body weights

  • Objective: The study was designed to investigate the effects of restraint method, restraint duration, and body weight on stress-linked hormones (corticosterone, adrenaline, and noradrenaline), blood biochemical (namely glucose and lactate), and the meat quality in broiler chickens. Methods: A total of 120 male broiler chickens (Cobb 500) were assigned to a $2{\times}3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design using two restraint methods (shackle and cone), three durations of restraint (10, 30, and 60 s), and two categories of live body weight ($1.8{\pm}0.1kg$ as lightweight and $2.8{\pm}0.1kg$ as heavyweight). Results: Irrespective of the duration of restraint and body weight, the coned chickens were found to have lower plasma corticosterone (p<0.01), lactate (p<0.001), lower meat drip loss (p<0.01), cooking loss (p<0.05), and higher blood loss (p<0.05) compared with their shackled counterparts. The duration of restraint had significant effects on the meat initial pH (p<0.05), ultimate pH (p<0.05), and yellowness (p<0.01). The lightweight broilers exhibited higher (p<0.001) blood loss and lower (p<0.05) cooking loss compared to the heavyweight broilers, regardless of the restraint method used and the duration of restraint. However, the interaction between the restraint method, duration of restraint, and body weight contributed to differences in pre-slaughter stress and meat quality. Therefore, the interaction between the restraint method and the duration of restraint affected the meat shear force, lightness ($L^*$) and redness ($a^*$). Conclusion: The duration of restraint and body weight undoubtedly affect stress responses and meat quality of broiler chickens. Regardless of the duration of restraint and body weight, the cone restraint resulted in notably lower stress, lower meat water loss, and higher blood loss compared to shackling. Overall, the findings of this study showed that restraint method, duration of restraint, and body weight may affect the stress response and meat quality parameters in broilers and should be considered independently or interactively in future studies.

Coexistence of Age-related Loss of Skeletal Muscle Mass and Obesity in Korean Men in Their Thirties: Understanding Incidence Rate and Key Influencing Elements

  • PURPOSE: The coexistence of age-related skeletal muscle mass loss and obesity poses a substantial health risk for individuals because it combines the detrimental effects of muscle mass reduction associated with aging and the health complications from obesity. This study aimed to identify the incidence rate and key influencing elements among Korean men in their thirties. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 934 male participants was performed using complex sampling analysis. Various influencing elements were investigated, including age, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle mass index, smoking and drinking behaviors, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose levels, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels. RESULTS: The incidence rate was 2.90%. The key influencing elements were age, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, skeletal muscle index, systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol (p < .05). CONCLUSION: This study identified the incidence rate and key influencing element for CALSMO among Korean younger community-dwelling men.

  • An accurate analysis method for the determination of lead in whole blood by ICP/MS was developed. Whole blood samples were decomposed in microwave digestion system without any contamination and loss of lead. The 96 samples were analyzed by ICP/MS using mass$^{208}$ isotope of lead. Lead concentrations of human whole blood were ranged of $2.50{\sim}22.8{\mu}g/dL$. The accuracy of this analysis method was verified by analyzing of NIST SRM 955a series(lead in blood).

  • Objects : This study was aimed to investigate the treatment on Mental disorder of Women. Methods : Research data is based on Buindaejoenyangbang and Dong-uibogam. And study the treatment in Mental disorder of Women. Results : 1. Owing to women's physiological extraordinary nature, Mental disorder of Women’s treatment does not match Dongyipogam’s about the same symptoms. 2. Most of happing the symptom is due to blood Wind(four flavors) and deficiency of the Heart, treatments are dispelling Wind, tonifying blood of the Heart and calming the spirit. 3. At postpartum, Mental disorder of Women’s causes are deteriorating blood vanquished blood and external affections with a blood deficiency from the loss of blood, treatments are tonifying the blood, expel Wind and clear Cold and remove blood stagnation to promote regeneration. Conclusion : The results suggest that the extraordinary nature of the circumstances due to women specific pathology must be considered.
