  • Purpose - Could blood type provide the key to wellness and affect our personality? The theory that blood type is linked to personality (and other mental and physical qualities) is popular mostly in Japan, although it has carried over to Taiwan and South Korea. Research Design, Data, and Methodology - Questionnaires were distributed to 380 production line company employees. The reliability and validity of the questionnaires were examined through independence testing and the average ratio comparison of the two populations. Additionally, using Pearson's chi-square formula, the relationship between the blood group (independent variable) and general group participation (dependent variable) was tested along with the Schuprow coefficient. Result - The prioritization of blood groups over the general group participation was identified and the following results were obtained: Individual group participation is affected by personality features derived from temperament, mood, and other characteristics. Conclusion - The study showed that individual blood groups have an effect on their group cooperation, and among blood groups, blood group A had the greatest tendency to group participation, followed by blood groups O, AB, B, respectively.

  • The risks of homologous blood transfusion are well documented and recently increased with the emergence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. This is a report concerning 29 consecutive adult with no blood conservation patients (Group I) who had an elective cardiac operations. A similar group of 29 patients operated on 1992 but with blood conservation (Group II). In I of Group I patients and 15 of Group II patients, no homologous blood products were required. Group II patients used significantly less fresh frozen plasma (2.05${\pm}$0.68 unit versus 6.52${\pm}$0.72 unit, p<0.05) and the homologous blood transfusion (0.42${\pm}$0.9 unit versus 3.64${\pm}$0.17 unit, p<0.05) than Group I patients. Group II patients had also significantly less postoperative bleeding (338${\pm}$39.9 ml versus 585${\pm}$93.0 ml, p<0.05) than Group I patients. Group II patients recieved 460${\pm}$62.6 ml of mediastinal shed blood in acquired group. In conclusion, a simple and inexpensive blood conservation program, mainly combining autologous blood removal before bypass, retransfusion of the volume remaining in the oxygenator, and consistent autotransfusion of mediastinal shed blood has enabled us to avoid infusion of homologous blood in 15/29 patients of Group II patients. No side effects or complicatinos could be related to the blood conservation program.

  • Could blood type provide a key to wellness and even affect our personality? The theory that blood type is linked to personality (and other mental and physical qualities) is popular mainly in Japan, though it has carried over to Taiwan and South Korea. The present study is the result of a scientific research in which the relationship between two important variables, namely blood group a nd group participation, are determined in the research framework. Based on some collected data from manufacturing firms which are accepted firms in Tehran Stock Exchange, and through cluster sampling a sample was selected. 380 questionnaires were distributed to the personnel of production line, of the firms then the reliability and validity of the questionnaires through independence test and average ratio comparison of the two population were examined, and through Pearson's chi-square formula, the relationship between blood group (independent variable) and group participation (dependent variable) were tested, then through Schuprow coefficient, the prioritization of blood groups over group participation was identified and the following results were obtained: people group participation is affected by their personality features which is derived from their temperament, mood, and characteristics. The study also showed that people blood groups has an effect on their group cooperation, and among blood groups, blood group A has the greatest tendency to group participation and then blood group O, AB, B are prioritized respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare nutrient intakes and blood lipids of middle-aged women according to the obesity index by %Fat. Subjects were assigned to one of the following groups based on percentage of body fat (%Fat): normal weight (18% ~ < 28%), overweight (28% ~ < 33%) and obesity (over 33%). Nutrient intakes were evaluated based on questionnaires of 24 hours recall method and blood lipids were analyzed by blood analyzer. The results were as follows. 1) Nutrient intakes were that carbohydrates and fat intakes in obesity group were higher than normal and overweight group but the difference was not significant, and protein intake rate was similar all groups. The intake rate of calcium was higher in normal group than obesity group (p < 0.05), and obesity group ingested under dietary reference intakes. The intake rate of iron was higher in obesity group than normal group (p < 0.05). 2) TG, TC, VLDL and TC/HDL in obesity group were higher than normal group (p < 0.001). The attack rate of coronary heart disease in obesity group is higher than normal group (p < 0.01), LDL, blood glucose and blood pressure in obesity group were higher than normal group (p < 0.01), and HDL was a little higher in normal group than obesity group, but the difference was not significant. 3) The correlation of anthropometric measurements, blood glucose, blood lipid, and blood pressure had significant results. Weight was associated positive level with blood glucose, blood lipid and blood pressure. Waist and WHR were associated positive level with blood glucose and blood lipid but weren't associated with blood pressure. BMI was associated positive level with blood glucose, blood lipid and blood pressure, %Fat was associated positive level with blood lipid and blood pressure, but wasn't associated with blood glucose. These results suggest that the decrease of waist on blood glucose control is better than decrease of % Fat and BMI, the decrease of %Fat and BMI on blood pressure control is better than decrease of waist, and the decrease of %Fat on blood lipid control is better than waist and BMI. The nutritional education for obesity treatment must perform to analyze the blood and assess the obesity degree by %Fat, waist and BMI before nutritional education, so the obesity treatment will be effectively.

  • Background: An association between the ABO groups and pancreatic cancer has been shown previously, group A being significantly commoner in affected patients. We conducted the present study to investigate the prognostic effect of ABO blood group on overall survival of pancreas cancer patients. Methods: Patients who were diagnosed between 2005 and 2010 with pancreas cancer at Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. Patient demographics and ABO blood groups were obtained from medical charts. Results: Fifty pancreas cancer patients with known ABO blood group were included, 26 (52%) group A, 12 patients (24%) group 0, 9 (18%) group B, and 3 (6%) group AB. Blood group A pancreas cancer patient median age was 61.5 (39-80) years, with the median age of the other blood groups (B, AB,O) being 55.5 (32-74) years (p=0.14). 18% of patients with blood group A and 11% of the other blood group patients had metastasis (p=0.17) at the time of diagnosis. The median overall survival of blood group A pancreas patients was significantly lower than the other blood group patients, 7.6 (95%CI: 5.0-10.2) months versus 29.0 (95%CI: 0.0-68.8) months (p=0.05). Conclusions: Acccording to previously published cohort studies a relation may exist between ABO blood groups and cancer of pancreas. In this study we observed that pancreas cancer patients with blood group A have significantly worse overall survival than other blood groups.

  • Back ground and Objective : There is a need for objectification and scientific verification of Pattern identification in Oriental medicine. The purpose of this study was to investigate the skin characteristics of Qi deficiency and Blood deficiency animal models. Material and Methods : Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: normal group, Qi deficiency group and Blood deficiency group. The Qi deficiency animal model was induced through restriction of food (75g/kg/day) for 20 days. Blood deficiency animal model was induced by bleeding from tail vein(0.3 ml/time) 8 times. The normal animal model was kept without any intervention. The general condition was observed by measuring body weight, body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and hematological and biochemical parameters. The skin characteristics were observed by measuring the erythema index(EI), melanin index(Ml), transepidermal water loss(TEWL) and dermal microcirculation. Results : 1. In the Qi deficiency group, body weight was lower than the other groups. In the Qi deficiency group, blood pressure was lower than in the Normal group. There was no difference in body temperature and pulse rate between the three groups. 2. In the Qi deficiency group, blood sugar was lower than in the Blood deficiency group. There was no difference in triacylglycerol between the three groups. In the Qi deficiency group, the WBC count was lower than in the Blood deficiency group. RBC count was highest in the Qi deficiency group, Normal group and Blood deficiency group respectively. In the Qi deficiency group, Hb and Hct were higher than the other groups. 3. EI and MI were decreased in the Qi deficiency group, and EI showed a significant decrease. 4. EI and MI were increased in the Blood deficiency group, and MI showed a significant increase. 5. TEWL was significantly increased in the Qi deficiency group, while it was decreased in the Blood deficiency group, TEWL was highest in the Qi deficiency group, Normal group and Blood deficiency group respectively and all three groups showed significant difference. 6. In the Qi deficiency group, dermal microcirculation was lower than the other groups. Conclusion : The above results show that the erythema index decreases in the Qi deficiency model, and the melanin index increases in the Blood deficiency model. The Qi deficiency animal model shows an increase in transepidermal water loss, while the Blood deficiency animal model shows a decrease. Further studies should develop new models of Pattern Identification that are more specific.

  • Autotransfusion system is a common method of reducing the need of intraoperative and postoperative homologous blood transfusion in cardiac operation. Between August 1991 and August 1993, a series of 51 adults undergoing open heart surgery was selected. Autotransfusion using Cell Saver [COBE Baylor Rapid Autologous Transfusion System was done with homologous blood transfusion in 15 cases [Group II or without homologous blood transfusion in 17 cases [Group III . The other 19 cases were taken without Cell Saver for control [Group I . The shed blood in the operative field, remained blood in the oxygenator after cardiopulmonary bypass, and blood drained from chest tubes in postoperative care were aspirated by means of a locally heparinized collection system. After the salvaged blood was washed and centrifuged, the processed blood subsequently reinfused. Composition of processed blood by Cell Saver was hemoglobin 16.9gm%, hematocrit 49%, RBC 5,140,000/ml, WBC 670/ml, and platelet 30,000/ml. In three group, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelet counts were decreased postoperatively, but no significant differences between three group. Postoperatively, the amounts of drainage from chest tubes was 543$\pm$121ml in Group I, 809$\pm$201ml in Group II, and 631$\pm$147ml in Group III. In Group II, there was large amount of drainage compared with Group I [p<0.05 . The amount of homologous blood transfused was 1116$\pm$219 ml in Group I, 791$\pm$183 ml in Group II [p<0.05 . The homologous blood was not transfused in 17 cases [53% with Cell Saver.Preoperative and postoperative, coagulation parameters showed no significant differences between three group. And there was no complication related to Cell Saver. We conclude that the autotransfusion using Cell Saver is effective for reducing the homologous blood transfusion in cardiac surgery.

  • Autologous blood transfusion is a common method of reducing the need for homologous blood transfusion during cardiac operations. Between June 1991 and May 1992, 12 cases [Group I] were experienced autologous blood transfusion using Cell Saver undergoing double valve replacement or redo-valve replacement. Control group [N=12, Group II] was selected to above similar operation during same period. The Cell Saver system [Haemonetics Corp.] was employed for autologous blood transfusion. The blood shed in the operative field before and after cardiopulmonary bypass and remained cardiotomy reservior was aspirated by means of a locally heparinized collecting system. After centrifused salvaged blood, the resulting red cell concentrate reinfused subsequently. The patient receiving autologous blood transfusion required significantly less homologous blood transfusion than their control group. [Group I; 3519 $\pm$ 869, Group II; 4622 $\pm$ 856, Respectively; P=0.005] There were no clinical infections in the autotransfusion group. And there was no apparent intergroup difference of the clinical findings, hematologio datas and coagulation parameters. We conclude the autotransfusion using Cell Saver is effective for reducing of the hom-ologlous blood transfusion in cardiac surgery.
