The main aim of this study was to investigate stress related activities of Sun-ginseng extract as a candidate for anti-stress-related functional supplement by comparing its effect to those of red ginseng, which is also known to alleviate stress. Normal group was not exposed to stress while the control group was exposed to stress. Rats were orally administered once a day with 200 mg red ginseng (RG) extract, 100 or 200 mg Sun-ginseng (SG) extract/kg body weight. Mice were given water containing 400 mg red ginseng extract, 200 or 400 mg SG/100 mL potable water. Rats were given supplements for 5 days without stress, and 5 days with restraint and electroshock stress. After final stress, stress-related behavioral changes of experimental animals were recorded and levels of blood corticosterone were measured. Mice were given supplements for 5 days through drinking water, and then fatigue related motor activity were recorded. SG-supplementation partially blocked stress effect on locomotion and elevated plus maze test in rats, and also partially blocked stress-induced behavioral changes such as freezing, burrowing, smelling, facewashing, grooming and rearing behavior in rats. SG-supplementation decreased blood corticosterone level which is increased by stress in rats. Effects of SG may not be modulated by GABAnergic nervous system. SG-supplementation prolonged swimming time and staying time on the wire and rotarod wheel in mice. These results suggest that SG partially protects living organisms from stress attack in some cases and thus has the potential to be used as a functional food to alleviate stress response.
Objective: Graves' disease, the most common cause of primary hyperthyroidism, is a thyroid specific autoimmune disorder. When resistance to medication is shown in spite of long term therapy with anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine therapy would be chosen in Western medicine. However, this therapy has often been reported to cause patients have hypothyroidism, thus requiring them to take levothyroxine for the rest of their lives. In this study, we evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Ahnjeonbaekho-tang (AJBHT) on patients with Graves' disease. Methods: We prescribed AJBHT for 3 months to two groups: patients who had been taking antithyroid drugs were administered AJBHT after discontinuing the antithyroid drugs ($Com-Tx{\rightarrow}Single-Tx$), and patients who had not been taking antithyroid drugs were started with AJBHT (Single-Tx) immediately. We evaluated the thyroidal function test (TFT) and visual analogue scale (VAS) for clinical symptoms for 3 months. Results: Serum T3 and fT4 were significantly decreased in both groups and remission rate of thyroidal hormones were significantly improved in the Single-Tx group. The clinical symptoms of palpitation, fatigue, and heat intolerance were significantly improved in both groups. In the safety analysis, all patients were in normal range of liver, renal function blood test and common blood count. Conclusion: From these results, we suggested that AJBHT was effective on TFT and clinical symptoms of Graves' disease. The study supports that AJBHT may be a useful agent for patients with Graves' disease who are resistant to antithyroid medication or radioactive iodine therapy, and for patients at first diagnosis.
Processing of traditional herbal medicine is one of the pharmaceutical technique in oriental medicine. Most frequently used processing method in oriental medicine are roasting and steaming. In this studies, to elucidate the pharmacological transformation of traditional herbal medicine by means of processing them, Ginseng Radix (root of Panax ginseng, Araliaceae) was used as a sample. Processed ginseng radix (SGR, Sun Ginseng) was prepared by steaming of roots of white ginseng (GR) for 3 hours at $120^{\circ}C$. The biological activities of methanol extract of GR and SGR were investigated. According to DPPH radical scavenging effects, and inhibitory effects of xanthine oxidase and AAPH induced hemolysis, PGR exhibited more effective than those of GR in vitro. And, the antifatigue effect of GR and SGR were investigated using a weight-loading forced swimming test by monitoring swimming times and prolonged intensity exercise model rats by measuring blood biochemical parameters. GR and SGR were significantly prolonged swimming times in 8% body weight ratio loaded mice. Also, they had the inhibitory effects on the decrease of blood glucose levels, the elevation of serum creatinine, lactic acid and free fatty acid, and lactic dehydrogenase activities in forces swimming rats with 1% of the body weight attached to the neck for 3 hours. SGR was more excellent than GR on these effect. Also, these effects were transformed to the n-butanol fraction of methanol extract of SGR. From these results, it can be considered that SGR has antifatigue effect.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identified patterns of studies and to analyze the nursing research related to the massage intervention in Korea and to improve direction of nursing research in massage intervention in Korea. Methods: The research studies related to the massage were selected from the Korean Nurses Academic Society Journal and dissertation which were conducted experimental research design the last 7 years in Korea. The total numbers of the studies were 58. Result: The study subjects were post operational state in 34.5%, healthy adult in 17.2% studies. The others dealt with infant, cancer, dementia, hypertension, preterm neonates, elderly. Types of massage were whole body in 31.1%, foot in 22.6%, hand in 17.2%, back in 13.8% studies. And Meridian massage in 17.2%. Length of massage was below 5 minutes in 17.2%, 6~10 minutes in 29.4% and 11~20 minutes in 32.8% studies. Frequency of massage was only 1 time in 25.9%, 2~5 times in 31.1% studies. Massage produced psychological and physiological effects. Positive psychologic effects were anxiety relief, pain relief, mood enhancement and fatigue relief. Positive physiologic effects on body systems were blood pressure, heart rate, edema, skin temperature, immune system, blood glucose, excretion, PMS syndrome and growth and development. Conclusion: As a result, effects of massage were almost positive. Therefore massage is useful alternative nursing intervention. But more attention research is needed to identify the objectivity instrument to measure and repeat research.

The blood glucose levels of streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats were dose-dependently decreased by administrations of various doses(100, 200, 400, significantly 200+100mg/kg) of Mixed Extracts from Acantopanacis senticosi Radicis Cortex and Eucommiae Cortex. 2. The serum total cholesterol levels of streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats were dose-dependently decreased by administrations of various doses (100, 200, 400, significantly 200+100mg/kg) of Mixed Extracts from Acantopanacis senticosi Radicis Cortex and Eucommiae Cortex. 3. The serum triglyceride levels of streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats were dose-dependently decreased by administrations of various doses(100, 200, 400, significantly 200+100mg/kg) of Mixed Extracts from Acantopanacis senticosi Radicis Cortex and Eucommiae Cortex. 4. The swimming time levels in mouse were dose-dependently extended by administrations of various doses(100, 200, 400, significantly 200+100mg/kg) of Mixed Extracts from Acantopanacis senticosi Radicis Cortex and Eucommiae Cortex. 5. The body weight levels in mouse were dose-dependently decreased by administrations of various doses(100, 200, 400, significantly 200+100mg/kg) of Mixed Extracts from Acantopanacis senticosi Radicis Cortex and Eucommiae Cortex. 6. Stress-induced gastric ulcer were dose-dependently repaired by administrations of various doses(100, 200, 400, significantly 200+100mg/kg) of Mixed Extracts from Acantopanacis senticosi Radicis Cortex and Eucommiae Cortex.
Gardenia Jasminoides(GJ) is traditionally used for treatment of hepatic disease, insomnia, anxiety, and inflammatory disease. The aim of this study is to examine effects of GJ extract in response to stress. Animals of the normal group were not exposed to any stress and the control group were exposed to stress. The rats of the Ginseng and GJ supplementary group were orally administered once a day with 100mg of red ginseng extract, 100mg of GJ extract/kg body weight. The mice were given water containing 200mg of red ginseng extract, 200mg of GJ extract/100ml potable water. Animals were given supplements for 7 days without stress, and then were given supplements for 5 days with restraint and electroshock stress. After loading final stress, we examined stress related behavioral changes of experimental animals and measured the levels of blood corticosterone. GJ-supplementation partially blocked the stress effect on locomotion and elevated plus maze test in rats, and also partially blocked stress-induced behavioral changes such as freezing, burrowing, face-washing, smelling and rearing behavior in rats. The effect was almost equipotent to Ginseng's effect. GJ-supplementation didn't influence on fatigue related behavior or physical stress resistance. GJ-supplementation decreased the levels of blood corticosterone which is increased by stress in rats. These results suggest that GJ protects partially the living organism from stress attack and it has the potential to be used as a functional material to alleviate stress response.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine anger-expression patterns and their association with state and trait anger and physical and psychological health status in health care workers. Method: Four hundred and forty eight nurses, physicians and technicians from a large medical center completed standardized questionnaires of anger, anger-expression patterns and mood. They also had blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and body mass index measured during their annual physical examinations. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, chi-square and ANOVA. Results: Subjects showed two major clusters of anger-expression patterns: anger-control and anger-in/out. Subjects with the anger-in/out pattern reported higher state and trait anger and more anxiety, depression and fatigue than subjects with the anger-control pattern. Physical health indicators, however, were not significantly different between the two clusters of anger-expression patterns. Conclusion: Anger-expression patterns are associated with psychological health status but not with physical health status. Anger-expression patterns, however, need to be examined over time to assess their long-term effects on the physical and psychological health status in future studies.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the predictors of blood and body fluid exposure (BBFE) in multifaceted individual (sleep disturbance and fatigue), occupational (occupational stress), and organizational (hospital safety climate) factors, as well as infection prevention behavior. We also aimed to test the mediating effect of infection prevention behavior in relation to multifaceted factors and the frequency of BBFE. Methods: This study was based on a secondary data analysis, using data of 246 nurses from the Shift Work Nurses' Health and Turnover study. Based on the characteristics of zero-inflated and over-dispersed count data of frequencies of BBFE, the data were analyzed to calculate zero-inflated negative binomial regression within a generalized linear model and to test the mediating effect using SPSS 25.0, Stata 14.1, and PROCESS macro. Results: We found that the frequency of BBFE increased in subjects with disturbed sleep (IRR = 1.87, p = .049), and the probability of non-BBFE increased in subjects showing higher infection prevention behavior (IRR = 15.05, p = .006) and a hospital safety climate (IRR = 28.46, p = .018). We also found that infection prevention behavior had mediating effects on the occupational stress-BBFE and hospital safety climate-BBFE relationships. Conclusion: Sleep disturbance is an important risk factor related to frequency of BBFE, whereas preventive factors are infection prevention behavior and hospital safety climate. We suggest individual and systemic efforts to improve sleep, occupational stress, and hospital safety climate to prevent BBFE occurrence.
Background: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a clonal disorder of hemopoeitic stem cells, characterized by infective hematopoiesis, peripheral cytopenias along with hypercellularity of marrow and marked dysplastic features. Our aim was to study the spectrum of the WHO classification in adult Pakistani patients with MDS at disease presentation. Materials and Methods: This retrospective descriptive study was conducted at Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College, extending from January 2010 to December 2014. Patient data were retrieved from the maintained archives. Results: Overall, 45 patients were diagnosed at our institution with de novo MDS during the study period. There were 28 males and 17 females. Age ranged between 18 and 95 years with a mean of $57.6{\pm}17.4years$. The male to female ratio was 1.7:1. According to the WHO classification, 53.3% had refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia, 22.2% had refractory cytopenia with unilineage dysplasia, 4.4% each had refractory anemia with excess of blasts-1 and II and 15.5% had MDS unclassified. The main presenting complaints were generalized fatigue (60%), fever (33.3%), dyspnea (15.5%), bleeding (13.3%) and weight loss (11.1%). Physical examination revealed pallor in 37.7%, followed by petechial and purpuric rashes in 20% of patients. Hemoglobin was <10 g/dl in 41 (91.1%). Pancytopenia and bicytopenia were noted in 18 (40%) and 14 (31.1%) respectively. Conclusions: MDS in our patients presents at a relatively young age. Refractory c ytopenia with multilineage dysplasia was the dominant disease variant in our setting.
Mainly side effects of antitumor chemotheraphy are fatigue, G-Ⅰ trouble(such as vomitting, nausea, diarrhea) and reduction of medullary function etc. Differentiated from syndromes in oriental medicine, above symptoms are recognized to 'Deficiency of both ki(vital energy) and blood'. And SDT(Sipjeondaebotang) has been widely used in 'Deficiency of both ki(vital energy) and blood'. Dr. Mun's SDTG(Sipjeondaebotanggamibang) consists of SDT plus several herb medicines-these have antitumor effect and reduce chemotherapheutic side effect. This experiment was undertaken to study the effects of SDTG on chemotherapheutic side effect and cytotoxicity. The results obtained in this study were as follows: Antitumor activities of the ethanol extract from SDTG(Sipjeondaebotanggamibang) and MMC(Mytomycin) on ascitis form of calcinoma in mice is a little improved. Especialy mean survival times of the group of SDTG(200mg/kg) and MMC(0.1mg/kg) is improved over 50%. When SDTG and MMC is administrated together, the weight of tumor is more decreased than MMC alone. The effect of the ethanol extract from SDTG and MMC on the lysosomal enzymes in Ehrich ascites carcinoma cell are more significantly improved than MMC alone. SDTG extract increases both NKcell conjugation and cyto-lysis against target cell. According to the above results it is recognized that SDTG increases the chemotherapheutic cytotoxicity of MMC and the activity of NKcell.
