  • Communication systems where chaotic signals are used as carrier signals are called Direct Chaotic Communication (DCC). DCC systems have the disadvantage of low bit-error rate (BER) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) performance. The main reason for this disadvantage is that the DCC receiver circuits are constant in the decision block with the threshold voltage values. In this study, a new receiver circuit has been designed to increase BER / SNR performance in digital based DCC systems. According to this, the noise obtained in the receiver circuits of the communication systems is accepted as the dirac delta function. Then a decision block with two inputs is performed using the dirac delta function and the ramp function is obtained. The numerical and the experimental results of the study reveal that proposed model shows much better performance between %70 and %96.

  • The adaptive modulation along with SFBC transmit diversity is a very effective method to increase the capacity of an OFDM system. However, severe performance degradation is resulted when inter-symbol interference is applied due to frequency-selective fading in mobile communications. In this paper, we have proposed and analyzed an OFDM system with SFBC transmit diversity and adaptive modulation scheme based on pre-equalization methods, in order to increase the data transmission rate in the downlink without much increase in system complexity. By introducing subchannel grouping and the pre-equalization method among adjacent subchannels, we could enhance the efficiency of the adaptive modulation a lot. By computer simulation, it has been proven that the proposed schemes show a better BER and throughput performance than the conventional schemes under severely time-varying multipath fading channel.

  • In this paper, we consider a constant modulus (CM) based blind adaptive receiver design for downlink multi-carrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems employing simple space-time block coding (STBC). In the paper, filter weight vectors used for the detection of the transmitted symbols are partitioned into its subvectors and then, special relations among the optimal subvectors minimizing the CM metric are derived. Using the special relations, we present a modified CM metric and propose a new blind adaptive stochastic-gradient CM algorithm (SG-CMA) by minimizing the modified CM metric. The proposed blind adaptive SG-CMA has faster convergence rate than the conventional SG-CMA because the filter weight vectors of the proposed scheme are updated in the region of satisfying the derived special relations. Computer simulation results are given to verify the superiority of the proposed SG-CMA.

  • In this paper, we present a variable block method to reduce additive computational requirements in determining step-size of variable step-size LMS (VS-LMS) algorithms. The block length is inversely proportional to the changing of step-size in VS-LMS algorithm. The technique reduces computational requirements of the conventional VS-LMS algorithms without a degradation of performance in convergence rate and steady state error. And a method for deriving initial step-size, when the input is zero mean, white Gaussian sequence, is proposed. For demonstrating the good performances of the proposed method, simulation results are compared with the conventional variable step-size algorithms in convergence speed and computational requirements.

  • We present new digital watermarking scheme that embeds a watermark according to the characteristics of the image or video. The scheme is compatible with established image compression standard. We define a weighting function using a parent-child structure of the DCT coefficients in a block to embed a maximum watermark. The spatio-frequency localization of the DCT coefficients can be achieved with this structure. In the detection stage, we present an optimum a posteriori threshold with a given false detection error probability based on the statistical analysis. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient and robust against various signal processing techniques. Especially, they are robust against widely used coding standards, such as JPEG and MPEG.

  • A progressive image transmission (PIT) scheme based on the classified transform vector quantization (CVQ) technique using the lapped orthogonal transform (LOT) and human visual system (HVS) weighting is proposed in this paper. Conventional block transform coding of images using DCT produces in general undesirable block-artifacts at low bit rates. In this paper, image blocks are transformed using the LOT and classified into four classes based on their structural properties and further divided adaptively into subvectors depending on the LOT coefficient statistics with HVS weighting to improve the reconstructed image quality by adaptive bit allocation. The subvectors are vector quantized and transmitted progressively. Coding tests using computer simulations show that the LOT/CVQ based PIT of images is a effective coding scheme. The results are also compared with those obtained using PIT/DCTVQ. The LOT/CVQ based PIT reduces the block-artifacts significantly.

  • Space-Time Block Code (STBC) is a simple transmit diversity scheme mitigating detrimental effects of fading channel. However, STBC receivers require channel knowledge and suffer from inaccurate channel estimation. Differential Space-Time Modulation (DSTM) renders the receiver a choice of coherent detection or non-coherent detection, depending on the availability of the channel information. Based on the simulated BER performances of these two schemes over various normalized Doppler frequency scenarios using LTE-like parameters, a benefit of adaptively switching the receiver type is investigated.

  • In this paper, we propose a rate-distortion optimization method to improve the coding efficiency of the conventional 3D-DCT based compression method using adaptive block mode selection for integral images. In the conventional 3D-DCT based compression method, 3D-DCT blocks of variable block sizes are adaptively selected depending on the characteristics of integral images, and then 3D-DCT is performed. The proposed method applies a rate-distortion optimization to determine the optimal block mode. In addition, we suggest the optimal Lagrangian parameter for integral images. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives bit-rate reduction of about 5%.

  • In this paper,we propose a knowledge-based system for locating Destination Address Block(DAB) by analyzing the structure of Korean envelope images. In the proposed system the preprocessing steps such as adaptive binarization connected component extraction and deskewing are carried out first for the effective structure analysis of the envelope image. Then DAB containing address name and zipcode parts of the input envelope image is extracted by an iterative procedure based on the knowledge acquired from the statistical feature analysis of the various envelope images. Most of the system for slocating address blocks on envelopes have extracted DAB by segmenting an envelope image into several candidate blocks followed by selecting one among the candidate blocks. Because it is very difficult to segment a Korean envelope image into several blocks due to the specific writing habits that the addresses on the envelope are written in close proximity to each other the proposed iterative procedure determines DAB by splitting or merging the connected components and verifies the determined DAB without segmentation and selection. Experiments with a great number of the live envelopes provided from Seoul Mail Center in Koorea were carried out. The results reveal that the proposed system is very effective for address block location on Korean envelopes.

  • This paper presents a new edge-preserving algorithm and its VLSI architecture for block artifact reduction. Unlike previous approaches using block classification, our algorithm utilizes pixel classification to categorize each pixel into one of two classes, namely smooth region and edge region, which are described by the edge-preserving maps. Based on these maps, a two-step adaptive filter which includes offset filtering and edge-preserving filtering is used to remove block artifacts. A pipelined VLSI architecture of the proposed deblocking algorithm for HD video processing is also presented in this paper. A memory-reduced architecture for a block buffer is used to optimize memory usage. The architecture of the proposed deblocking filter is prototyped on FPGA Cyclone II, and then we estimated performance when the filter is synthesized on ANAM 0.25 ${\mu}m$ CMOS cell library using Synopsys Design Compiler. Our experimental results show that our proposed algorithm effectively reduces block artifacts while preserving the details.
