블리스터링에 관한 연구(제1보) - 안료의 배합비가 블리스터링에 미치는 영향 - (Studies on the Blistering Resistance(I) - The influence of pigment ratio on blistering resistance -)

  • Recently the use of web offset printing has been increasing, which can provide high print speed, mass production, and high print quality. However, high speed web offset printing has frequently undergone a blistering problem when the printed paper passes through hot air dryers. Blistering occurs in the middle of the base paper or in the coating layer. This paper focused on the blistering occurring in the base paper. In order to elucidate the effect of pigment ratio on blistering, 6 types of coating color were prepared with varying GCC/clay ratios and printability and blistering were investigated focusing on structure changes in the coating layer. When the clay content in the coating layer was increased, surface roughness and surface strength were decreased and paper gloss was increased. In addition, it was found that the coating layer structure with high clay content, which contains lots of discontinuous pores, hindered water vapors to penetrate out and, as a result, blistering occurred.

Effect of Fluoride Conversion Coating on the Corrosion Resistance and Adhesion of E-painted AZ31 Magnesium Alloy

  • This article reports improved corrosion resistance and adhesion of electro-paint (E-paint) with fluoride conversion coating (FCC) on AZ31 Mg alloy for the first time. These improvements were observed in comparison to chemically polished samples with no chemical conversion coating and samples with cerium conversion coatings (CeCC). FCCs were prepared in a hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution for four different times; 10, 30, 60, and 120 s. The colour of the samples changed from light gold to brown with increasing immersion time, indicating the formation of thicker FCC coatings with increasing immersion time. The adhesion of the E-paint on FCC-coated AZ31 Mg alloy was tested after 500 h of immersion in deionized (DI) water. Salt spray test (SST) results revealed delamination of E-paint on the chemically polished sample, severe blistering on the samples with CeCC, but no delamination and no blistering on the samples with FCC.

Deposition and Corrosion Resistance of Electrophoretic Paint Coated on AZ61 and TZ61 Magnesium Alloys

  • Electrophoretic paint (E-paint) was investigated on four different magnesium substrates: as-extruded AZ61 (AZ61), heat-treated AZ61 (AZ61-H), as-extruded TZ61 (TZ61) and heat-treated TZ61 (TZ61-H), to elucidate the effect of heat treatment and alloying elements on the deposition and corrosion resistance of E-paint. It was found that, a rapid increase of voltage, indicating that the deposition of E-paint had started, was observed after an induction time of 0.39 min for AZ61-H, 0.43 min for AZ61, 0.51 min for TZ61-H and 0.58 min for TZ61. The amount of E-paint deposited on the four samples was approximately similar, but the electrical charge used for the deposition process on the heat-treated samples was smaller than that on the as-extruded samples. The current efficiencies of E-paint on AZ samples (AZ61 and AZ61-H) were higher than those of TZ samples (TZ61 and TZ61-H), and on the heat-treated samples were higher than on as-extruded samples. All E-paintings on the four magnesium substrates had an excellent adhesion without any paint detached by tape peel-test. However, many large blisters were formed on the surface of AZ samples, and none, or very small blisters were observed on TZ samples after immersion test in DI-water for 500 h at $40^{\circ}C$. Under salt spray test (SST) conditions, E-paint on AZ samples showed blistering adjacent to scribes, while blistering of E-paint occurred on intact areas of TZ samples. The E-paint on heat-treated samples showed much better corrosion resistance than that on as-extruded samples. The ranking of greater to lesser corrosion resistance of the E-paint on these four different magnesium substrates is indicated by the order: AZ61-H > AZ61 > TZ61-H > TZ61.

  • Corrosion resistance and adhesion of electro-paint (E-paint) with fluoride conversion coating (FCC) on AZ31 Mg alloy were studied. Corrosion resistance and adhesion were studied as a function of FCC-treatment time and concentration of FCC-bath. Aqueous hydrogen fluoride (HF) solutions, with concentrations ranging from 0.5 M to 5 M, were used to form FCC on chemically polished AZ31 Mg alloy samples for six different times; 10, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 180s. The results from salt spray test (SST) showed that corrosion resistance of E-paint appeared to decrease with increasing FCC treatment times in low concentration FCC baths. The number of blisters formed on the FCC-treated samples increased with increasing FCC treatment time of more than 1 min in low concentration (0.5 M to 1 M) solutions. On the other hand, samples treated in the 5 M HF solution for 120s showed no delamination or blistering even after 1200h of SST.

온돌용 목질마루판의 표면물성 (Surface Properties of Wood-Based Floorings for Under Heating Systems (Ondol))

  • This study was investigated with the surface properties such as physical and accelerated tests of wood-based floorings. In physical test, hardness and abrasion resistance values of laminate floorings were higher than those of others. The center line average surface roughness($R_a$) of imported laminate flooring was highest value($1.34{\mu}m$) and that of imported solid wood flooring was lowest value($0.62{\mu}m$). In cold resistance and moist heat resistance, no defects were found on the surface of all flooring (crack, blistering, peeling, and gloss loss etc.) after testing. Wet-cold-dry cycle test showed that plywood flooring appeared some cracks. In accelerated weathering test, color difference increased with increasing Xenon arc light irradiation

  • This paper was studied on the characteristics of acid resistance and thermal shock for epoxy coatings in the strong acidic environment. The exhaust gas system, such as a air preheater, desulfurization equipment, for industrial boiler is damaged by dew point corrosion. To protect the acid corrosion, the coating using nonmetal was applied. The electrochemical polarization test, acid resistance and thermal shock test for epoxy coatings were carried out. And the acid resistance and thermal shock characteristics, aspect, and electrochemical anti-corrosion characteristics for epoxy coatings in the strong acidic environment were considered. The main results are as followings: As the epoxy glass flake coating by acidic thermal shock was damaged to the crack, blistering and elution etc., the current density of epoxy glass flake coating is high. But the damage of epoxy metal complex coating by acidic thermal shock was not occurred. Therefore the characteristics of acid resistance and thermal shock for epoxy metal complex coating is better than those for epoxy glass flake coating.

  • Test results to evaluate the mechanical properties of epoxy-coated bars and corrosion protection characteristics of epoxy coating on the bars are described. The results show good adhesion and abrasion resistance satisfying the requirements in relevant standards. The test results also show that for a coating thickness ranging from 150${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, satisfactory results are obtained regarding bendability. Cautions shall be required when bending epoxy-coated bars at a high bending degree and at a low temperature. The results of accelerated corrosion tests show good corrosion resistance. However, surface defects from the steel itself and insufficient blast-clean process form weak points resulting blistering or disbonding of the coating. The use of epoxy-coated bars is expected to help protect corrosion of reinforcement and extend the service life of reinforced concrete structures.

  • An evaluation of underwater - repair coating materials was based on the premise that defective areas of the existent epoxy coating such as blistering and cracking will be repaired on spot under submerged condition. Tests include the clarification as to whether they are compatible between as-built coating and new repair coating on each concrete specimen. Candidate coating materials for repair were tested in a laboratory to scrutinize their suitability to perform the needed function satisfactorily. The qualification tests performed are as a minimum as follows: Integrated radiation tolerance test, chemical resistance test (submerged condition in deionized water), hardness test and adhesion test of the repair materials. The proper repair coating materials were selected and approved from this test results.

  • The coated paper was greatly affected by the basic physical properties of the binder as well as the amount of the coating formula. High glass transition temperature (Tg) of the styrene-butadiene (SB) latex, selected as the binder in our study, gave the high stiffness to the coated paper, but lowered the binding force and print gloss. The average particle size of the SB latex also greatly affected to the coated paper so that the smaller particle size improved the rheological property of the coating formula and increased the binding force and print gloss. Another property of the SBR latex, gel content, was important because when its value was small, the latex was easily deformed at the high temperature and increased air permeability to the coated paper. Therefore, the lower gel content consequently resulted in the higher blistering resistance, especially in the web paper. The larger portion of the SB latex in the coated formula improved the binding force and print gloss, but decreased the ink set-off and ink-trapping to the coated paper. The heavier coating improved optical properties such as opacity, paper gloss and paper smoothness, to the coated paper.

Effect of Surface Contaminants Remained on the Blasted Surface on Epoxy Coating Performance and Corrosion Resistance

  • One of the critical issues in the coating specification is the allowable limit of surface contaminant(s) - such as soluble salt(s), grit dust, and rust - after grit blasting. Yet, there is no universally accepted data supporting the relationship between the long-term coating performance and the amount of various surface contaminants allowed after grit blasting. In this study, it was attempted to prepare epoxy coatings applied on grit-blasted steel substrate dosed with controlled amount of surface contaminants - such as soluble salt(s), grit dust, and rust. Then, coating samples were subjected to 4,200 hours of cyclic test(NORSOK M-501), which were then evaluated in terms of resistance to rust creepage, blistering, chalking, rusting, cracking and adhesion strength. Additional investigations on the possible damage at the paint/steel interface were carried out using an Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS) and observations of under-film-corrosion. Test results suggested that the current industrial specifications were well matched with the allowable degree of rust, whereas the allowable amount of soluble salt and grit dust after grit blasting showed a certain deviation from the specifications currently employed for fabrication of marine vessels and offshore facilities.
