  • Purpose: As the evaluation of the preoperative sensibility in the orbitozygomatic complex fracture, used by most surgeons, depends on the patient's subjective judgements, it is difficult to make generalization and to use it as an objective evaluation method. We used the blink reflex study to objectively evaluate injury to the infraorbital nerve. Methods: From December 2008 to November 2009, a total of 16 patients underwent the patient's subjective report on sensory symptoms and the blink reflex study preoperatively. Among patients having orbitozygomatic complex fracture of type III or more according to Henderson's classification and simultaneously suspected as being injured along the infraorbital nerve pathway, patients who had difficulty in checking preoperative sensibility and said 'normal sensibility' were selected as candidates. Results: Fifteen patients showed abnormal R1 on the fracture side. These results suggested that most of patients had injury to the infraorbital nerve. Conclusion: Contrary to the existing tests, the blink reflex study is a useful diagnostic tool in reflecting injury to the infraorbital nerve objectively.

  • In this study, we propose a non-invasive method to detect the drowsiness of a driver. The computer vision technology was used to extract an eye, track eyelids and measure the parameters related to the blink. We examined the blink patterns of a driver in drowsy state. For the evaluation of our image processing algorithm, the blink patterns were compared with the measured EOG signals. The result showed that our algorithm might be available in detection of drowsiness.

  • We investigated the change of the blink rate by wearing soft contact lens(SCL). Eight types of soft contact lenses were worn by twelve asymptomatic contact lens wearers. When wearers were worn SCLs for 15 min, the average blink rate was 20.0 blinks/min, which was a statistically significant increase compared to 13.3 blinks/min, the average blink rate of non-SCL-worn eye. After 8 hr of lens wear, the average blink rate was 24.3 blinks/min, and it was 11 blinks/min more than that of non-SCL-worn eye and 4 blinks/min more than that of 15 min SCL-worn eye. There were a little difference of the blink rate in types of lens, which the blink rate range of all lens after 15 min of lens wear was 18.1~20.9 blinks/min and that after 8 hr of lens wear was 22.9~24.9 blinks/min. When wearing A lens(vifilcon, 0.06 mm) having thin center thickness, wearers showing difference of 10.0~11.9 blinks/min between non-SCL-worn eye and 15 min SCL-worn eye reached 16.7% and it was more than that of relatively thick B lens(0.17 mm) and C lens(0.14 mm). This result suggest that the center thickness was not unique factor of the blink rate change and other factors would have synthetically influence on the blink rate change. In the case of B lens and C lens of hilafilcon material but having different center thickness and water content, wearers increasing more than 4.0 blinks/min after 8 hr of lens wear was 58.3% and 41.7%, respectively. This result have provided information that the lenses of similar materials but different center thickness and water content could cause individually the different change of the blink rate.

  • Although dysgeusia can occur as a consequence of stroke attacks, many physicians and patients tend to overlook it. A 50-year old woman complained of a 2-week history of abnormal sense of taste on the anterior two-thirds of right tongue. Blink reflex test demonstrated prolonged ipsilateral and contralateral R2 responses with the right supraorbital nerve stimulations, which suggest the lesion on the descending pathway. Brainstem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated abnormal findings in the right lower dorsal pons, anterior to 4th ventricle, lateral to inferior colliculus, and at the level of the pontomedullary junction, which was compatible with solitary tract nucleus and spinal trigeminal nucleus. Brainstem infarction should be considered in patients who have abnormal sense of taste. Additionally, blink reflex test may be helpful for the detection of central origin dysgeusia.

  • The discussion in this paper aims to introduce an approach to detect drowsiness with Android based smartphones using the OpenCV platform tools. OpenCV for Android actually provides powerful tools for real-time body's parts tracking. We discuss here about the maximization of the accuracy in real-time eye tracking. Then we try to develop an approach for detecting eye blink by analyzing the structure and color variations of human eyes. Finally, we introduce a time variable to capture drowsiness.

  • Prevention of drowsy driving is one of the important issues for safe driving. In this study, the algorithm for detection of drowsy driving has been developed. The algorithm was implemented by applying template matching and line profile, which detects eye blink. The accuracy of eye detection and blink detection was $97.45{\pm}3.67%$ and $98.50{\pm}0.92%$, which was resulted from the verification experiment that 21 subjects participated. Consequently, the algorithm is expected to be used to prevent sleep-deprived driving.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the graft-taking and growth of grafted cucumber seedlings as affected by light quality and blink cycle of LED modules. Four light quality treatments, namely blue, red, blue+red, white LED and four blink cycle levels of 5s/5s, 7s/3s, 9s/1s and control were provided to investigate the effect of lighting quality and blink cycle on the graft-taking and growth of grafted cucumber seedlings. Photoperiod for the control was 12/12 h. Photosynthetic photon flux, air temperature, and relative humidity for healing were maintained at $100{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, $25^{\circ}C$, and 90%, respectively. There was no significant difference in graft-taking of grafted cucumber seedlings according to light quality except the blue LED with the blink cycle of 5s/5s. Regardless of the blink cycle, there was no significant difference in graft-taking of cucumber seedlings healed under red, blue+red, and white LED modules. These results implied that the effects of light quality and blink cycle on the graft-taking were not significant. Differences in the leaf length, leaf area, and fresh weight of cucumber seedlings healed blue or red LED with the blink cycle of 9s/1s were found to be significant. There was no significant effect of the blink cycle on the growth of cucumber seedlings healed under white LED modules. The prices of white LED are gradually falling due to increased demand. Considering the manufacturing unit price of white LED modules, the cost savings of 10-15% are expected as compared to the conventional blue/red LED modules. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of white LED modules will be economical as an artificial lighting sources for healing of grafted seedlings.

  • Purpose: This review article was written to investigate what kind of forces are acting on the contact lens fitted on the cornea and its subsequent motion. Methods: A capillary action-induced force develops in the tear layer between the lens and cornea, which leads to the restoring force due to difference in layer thickness according to lens rotation. The characteristics of the lens movement can be determined by the various factors such as friction between eyelid and lens, acceleration force based on blinking and the restoring force incorporated with the viscous damping force. A mathematical model which consists of the differential equations and their numerical solution was proposed to analyze the damped motion of lenses. The model predicts the time dependence of lenses during and after the blink varying the BC, blink period and eyelid pressure. Results: It was found that both the blink period and lid pressure increases the movement increases because of the enhanced lid friction. As the BC increases the viscous damping reduces due to the lacrimal layer's increase which resulted in the enhanced lens motion. After blink the lens illustrates the damped oscillation because of the restoring force by the increased lacrimal layer thickness and reduced viscous resistance. The time for the lens to return to the equilibrium shortens as the BC increase because of the resistance reduction. Conclusions: The movement of the contact lens is governed by the characteristics of the lacrimal layer between the lens and cornea as well as the lid blink.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to find the relation between prognosis of peripheral facial palsy and blink reflex. Methods : Data was collected from patients who were admitted and treated by East-West Collaborative Treatment of Facial Palsy Center in Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong from January 2012 to June 2013. Patients were screened by inclusion/exclusion criteria and 163 patients' medical records were reviewed including blink reflex performed $14{\pm}2$ days after onset and House-Brackmann grade. Patients were divided into three groups, normal, delayed and absent group by blink reflex test. Trends of each recovery rate to House-Brackmann grade II and I depending on three group were analyzed at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after onset using Linear by linear association. Results : At 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after onset, both recovery rate to House-Brackmann grade II and I had a tendency to be decreased statistically significantly in order of normal, delayed and absent group. Conclusions : We could find feasibility of blink reflex as a prognostic factor of peripheral facial palsy. Further study will be necessary.
