Enzymatic pre-bleaching by modification of pulp fibers with xylanases is an attractive approach to reduce the consumption of toxic bleaching chemicals in the paper industry. In this study, an alkaliphilic endoxylanase gene was isolated from metagenomic DNA of a structurally stable thermophilic lignocellulose-degrading microbial consortium using amplification with conserved glycosyl hydrolase family 10 primers and subsequent genome walking. The full-length xylanase showed 78% sequence identity to an endo-${\beta}$-1,4-xylanase of Clostridium phytofermentans and was expressed in a mature form with an N-terminal His6 tag fusion in Escherichia coli. The recombinant xylanase Xyn3F was thermotolerant and alkaliphilic, working optimally at $65-70^{\circ}C$ with an optimal pH at 9-10 and retaining >80% activity at pH 9, $60^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. Xyn3F showed a $V_{max}$ of 2,327 IU/mg and $K_m$ of 3.5 mg/ml on birchwood xylan. Pre-bleaching of industrial eucalyptus pulp with no prior pH adjustment (pH 9) using Xyn3F at 50 IU/g dried pulp led to 4.5-5.1% increase in final pulp brightness and 90.4-102.4% increase in whiteness after a single-step hypochlorite bleaching over the untreated pulp, which allowed at least 20% decrease in hypochlorite consumption to achieve the same final bleaching indices. The alkaliphilic xylanase is promising for application in an environmentally friendly bleaching step of kraft and soda pulps with no requirement for pH adjustment, leading to improved economic feasibility of the process.

Currently, abundant wastes from the palm oil refining process have been generated which are hard to handle. Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) is the solid waste from this process and leads the cost of elimination to the company. This study aims to utilize the SBE as the alternative material in the non-fired wall tiles. The main raw materials used in non-fired wall tiles consist of laterite soil, fluvial sand, and Portland cement. The experimental formulas have been conducted and divided into 3 groups by varying the percentage of the SBE in main raw materials. The specimens of material mixture have been produced by uniaxial pressing at 100 bars, dimensions in $50{\times}100{\times}8mm$. These specimens are sprayed with water and cured in the air for 7 days. After that, bending strength and water absorption test of these specimens has been performed. It can be concluded that the best formula with the percentage of laterite soil, fluvial sand, Portland cement, and SBE are 60.94%, 13.125%, 22.5%, and 3.435%, respectively. Its bending strength and %water absorption are 0.68 MPa and 5.64%. Material costs of specimen are approximately $0.00276 USD/100g. Furthermore, the comparison of curing period between 7 days and 30 days has been performed. The 30 days of curing period can improve the bending strength of the specimen, but there is no effect on water absorption.
Nucleic acid and protein biosynthese of the glucose-bleached Chlorella cells in relation to the process of the chloroplast reformation were traced, by measuring the changes in the amounts of cell constituents and nuclease activities of the cells during the greening process. The contents of RNA and protein of the glucose-bleached cells decreased significantly, shile the contents of nucleotides and amino acids of the cells increased to compared with those of the control, showing that the biosynthetic activities of RNA and protein of the cells were inhibited severely in the glucose-bleaching process. In the early greening process of the glucose-bleached Chlorella cells the contents of RNA and protein of the cells increased significantly, while the contents of nucleotides nad amino acids of the cells increased to compared with those of the control, showing that the biosynthetic activities of RNA and protein of the cells were inhibited severely in the glucose-bleaching process. In the early greening process of the glucose-bleached Chlorella cells the contents of RNA and protein of the cells increased significantly wihout any increase in the chlorophyll contents showing that the massive biosynthese of RNA and protein proceed prior to the chlorophyll bioynthesis in the cells. The phosphate contents in the DNA fraction of the glucose-bleached cells decreased, but the contents of acid-insoluble polyphosphate increased to compared with those of the control in the early greening porcess, exhibiting that the incorporation of the phosphorus from acid-insoluble polyphosphate into DNA was retarded. In the greening process of the glucose-bleached cells the ribonuclease nad deoxyribonuclease activities of the cells decreased to compared with those of the control, although the initial activities of the both enzymes in the cell were far great compared with the control. Although the initial phosphate contents in the lipid fraction of the glucose-bleached Chlorella cells were more great than the control, the phosphate contents in the lipid fraction of the cells decreased in the early greening process to compared with control, and then increased in the late developmental stages in which massive chlorophyll biosynthesis occured.
The study was conducted to know the possibility that the removal efficiency of organic and suspended solids(SS) could be increased by suppling of sea water and the optimum amount of sea water to be supplied treat bleaching waste water by lime coagulation settlement at pulp mill process. When the lime dosage was increased, the removal efficiency of COD and SS in the waste water was increased based on the removal efficiency of COD and SS. The lime dosage and removal efficiency was increased proportionally with the lime concentration of 4,000 mg/l, but the increase of removal efficiency was presented slightly above the 4,000mg/l. It was evaluated that the removal efficiencies of COD and SS could be increased and the requirement of lime dosage could be decreased by the sea water supplement. The removal efficiency of SS was most increased when the sea water supplement was 10% or more in the waste water. The removal efficiencies of COD was the best at 4% sea water excepting the dilution efficiency by sea water supplement.

Red algae were used to make bleached pulp, from which paper handsheet samples were made. Red algae consists of rhizoidal filaments, epidermal tissues whose color were reddish, mucous carbohydrates, and other minor elements. Rhizoidal filaments of high brightness were obtained after extracting out mucous carbohydrates, and bleaching the remainder by using bleaching chemicals. The sizes and shapes of several rhizoidal filaments (or red algae pulp) from different red algae species were examined, and their handsheet properties were compared. Transparent and transluscent high density paper samples were made without applying refining process from the red algae pulp. White paper samples with good printability and excellent formation were made. We are developing pilot scale pulping and papermaking facilities at this time.
This study deals with the refinement of Hwasun flint clay by grinding, classifying, magnetic separation and acid treatment in sequence. Results are as follows ; 1. Fine kaolinite particles of median size in the range of 4.8 and 1.7$\mu\textrm{m}$ was collected, with the yield of 87.4% by dry grinding and classifying process. 2. It is proven that the iron bearing are of Hwasun flint clay is mainly consisted of chloritoid and iron rich muscovite. 3. As the results of the high gradient magnetic separation, the bleaching and iron removal degree of the dry grinding and classifying sample was 4-58% and 5-62% respectively. 4. As the results of the acid treatment, bleaching and weight loss degree of the dry grinding and classifying sample was reduced to 16-82% and 6-29% respectively.
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of whitening mouth rinses alone and in combination with conventional whitening treatments on color, microhardness, and surface roughness changes in enamel specimens. Materials and Methods: A total of 108 enamel specimens were collected from human third molars and divided into 9 groups (n = 12): 38% hydrogen peroxide (HP), 10% carbamide peroxide (CP), 38% HP + Listerine Whitening (LW), 10% CP + LW, 38% HP + Colgate Plax Whitening (CPW), 10% CP + CPW, LW, CPW, and the control group (CG). The initial color of the specimens was measured, followed by microhardness and roughness tests. Next, the samples were bleached, and their color, microhardness, and roughness were assessed. Data were analyzed through 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA; microhardness and roughness) and 1-way ANOVA (color change), followed by the Tukey post hoc test. The Dunnett test was used to compare the roughness and microhardness data of the CG to those of the treated groups. Results: Statistically significant color change was observed in all groups compared to the CG. All groups, except the LW group, showed statistically significant decreases in microhardness. Roughness showed a statistically significant increase after the treatments, except for the 38% HP group. Conclusions: Whitening mouth rinses led to a whitening effect when they were used after conventional treatments; however, this process caused major changes on the surface of the enamel specimens.
Artificial fine aggregates (denoted AFA) were fabricated using spent bleaching clay (denoted SBC) generated from processed vegetable oil and stone sludge (denoted SS) produced from crushed aggregate manufacturing materials for use as functional construction materials. Each raw material was crushed to particle size finer than $150{\mu}m$, and fine spherical pellets of approximately 1 ~ 4 mm in diameter were prepared by a pelletizing process. The physical properties of the AFA were measured with different types of sintering equipment. A new type of vertical furnace that sinters fine aggregates in a fluidized bed at high temperatures was designed and tested. AFA sintered in a rotary kiln at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of $1.5g/cm^3$ and a water absorption of 16%. AFA sintered in the vertical furnace at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of $1.9g/cm^3$ and water absorption of 8.5%. The bulk density of the AFA sintered in the vertical furnace showed a bulk density 27% higher and water absorption 47% lower than those of AFA sintered in the rotary kiln.
This paper enables stakeholders involved in textile industry to gain an overview of standards used for care labelling and help establish a common standard that could be used as a universal standard. This study provides a comprehensive and detailed analytical study of care labelling standards adopted by common countries in the textile market. It was found that the development of a universal system for care labeling could enhance the trade of textile articles and assist consumers in caring for textile articles. Universal care label systems could be characterized by two main features of inclusiveness and comprehensiveness. The range of instructions and symbols presented were found different among standards. Insignificant differences in symbols' shapes were found between standards for bleaching, ironing and professional cleaning. The washing process had the widest variety of instructions; in addition, options were provided by stated standards. Different meanings were found for similar shapes in some tumble drying symbols. The study findings show the importance of enhancing text based standards or the development of an understandable format across as many cultures as possible. The unification of symbols and meanings may be needed to provide global consumers consistent guidance. The efficiency of a detailed standard that provides and covers a wide range of instructions is an important aspect. The visibility and practicality of offering variable options/symbols in one standard is an important aspect for developing a universal care label system.

The applicability of arrowroots as materials for paper manufacture was investigated by evaluating the characteristics of arrowroots pulping and pulps, and the surface characteristics of paper made of arrowroots. The results is as follows. The yield of grounded pulp, alkaline pulp, grounded bleach pulp, and alkaline bleach pulp are 98.0%, 37.7%, 84.8%, and 32.5%, respectively. The extraction components in arrowroot's fibers was shown high in 1%-NaOH extraction. The amount of holocellulose and lignin were largely decreased, but a slight decrease was shown in the bleaching processes. Many shivers were shown in the grounded fibers. The amount of shivers was decreased and the single fibers were increased during the process of bleaching. The alkaline pulp and the alkaline bleach pulp showed high in the beating time and freeness than the grounded pulp and grounded bleach pulp. The conditions of sheet surface according to beating time is effected largely by the conditions of original pulp.
