A few fluid structure interaction analyses have been developed for turbomachinery blades in comparison with aircraft wings. Also, the existing aeroelastic analyses for turbomachinery blades have been mostly limited to cases with a steady freestream. In reality, however, the inflowing freestream is often pulsating. Therefore, this paper presents stability and forced response analyses of an isolated three-dimensional blade under pulsating freestream conditions. A new three-dimensional unsteady vortex lattice model under a pulsating freestream has been developed in discrete time domain to examine unsteady aerodynamic forces acting on a vibrating blade. The blade's structural behaviors have been analyzed by using a three-dimensional plate model. In the aeroelastic analysis, the flutter onset of a blade under pulsating freestream is predicted by the Floquet analysis. The new time domain method can predict aeroelastic stability as well as time history.
The flow inside an axial turbomachinery with multi-stage can be characterized as unsteady phenomena. In order to predict accurately these complex unsteady flow patterns including rotor-stator interaction effects, enormous computer resources are required. So it is not compatible in preliminary design process. In this study, steady coupled blade row flow with rotor-stator interaction solver is developed using interrow mixing model and used to predict the performance of the axial fan. To verify the computational method, the calculations are compared with experimental results and show satisfactory agreement with them. The interaction effects on the performance of the axial fan have also been studied by comparing the results of steady coupled blade row and steady single blade row flow calculation.

In this study, aeroelastic performance analyses have been conducted for a 10MW class wind turbine blade model Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems.

The paper presents a speed control algorithm for a full pitch-controlled wind turbine system. Torque of a blade generated by wind energy is a nonlinear function of wind speed, angular velocity, and pitch angle of the blade. The design of the controller, in general, is performed by linearizing the torque in the vicinity of the operating point assuming the angular velocity of the blade is constant. For speed control, however the angular velocity is on longer a constant, so that linearization of the torque in terms of wind speed and pitch angle is impossible. In this study, a reference pitch model is derived in terms of a wind speed, angular velocity, and pitch angle, which makes it possible to design a controller without linearizing the nonlinear torque model of the blade. This paper also suggests a method of designing a hydraulic control system for changing the pitch angle of the blade.
The characteristics of the circular arc shaped multi-blade windmil are investigatedl. The prototypical windmill was tested in the laboratory at wind tunnel speeds of 5.5, 9.4m/s. and the model windmill was also tested in the laboratory, The power and torque coefficients were studied as functions of the blade section, the aspect ratio for blade diameter and windmill radius(M = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7), the number of blades and finally the tip-speed ratio. The analysis of the experimental results for the model windmill showed that there is the highest revolutions per minute(R.P.M) at the circular arc shaped multi-blade windmill having the blade number 10, aspect ratio(M = 0.7). and the results for the prototypical windmill showed that the power coefficient increased to a maximum value and then decreased again with an increase in the tip speed ratio, while the torque coefficient decreased directly with an increase in the tip speed ratio Finally, the experimental results were compared with the Savonius blade. the maximum power coefficient for the arc shaped blade was greater than for the Savonius blade and occured at a lower tip speed ratio.

This paper deals with the aeroelastic instability of vibrating multiple blade rows under aerodynamic coupling with each other. A model composed of three blade rows, e.g., rotor-stator-rotor, where blades of the two rotor cascades are simultaneously vibrating, is considered. The displacement of a blade vibrating under aerodynamic force is expanded in a modal series with the natural mode shape functions, and the modal amplitudes are treated as the generalized coordinates. The generalized mass matrix and the generalized stiffness matrix are formulated on the basis of the finite element concept. The generalized aerodynamic force on a vibrating blade consists of the component induced by the motion of the blade itself and those induced not only by vibrations of other blades of the same cascade but also vibrations of blades in another cascade. To evaluate the aerodynamic forces, the unsteady lifting surface theory for the model of three blade rows is applied. The so-called k method is applied to determine the critical flutter conditions. A numerical study has been conducted. The flutter boundaries are compared with those for a single blade row. It is shown that the effect of the aerodynamic blade row coupling substantially modifies the critical flutter conditions.
Static aeroelastic is investigated in a wind turbine blade. Imposed to different loadings, the very long and flexible structures of blades experience some changes in its preliminary geometry. This results in variations of aerodynamic loadings. An iterative approach is developed to study the interactions between structure and aerodynamics evaluating variations in induced stresses in presence of aeroelasticity phenomenon for a specific wind turbine blade. A 3D finite element model of the blade is constructed. Aerodynamic loading is applied to the model and deflected shape is extracted. Then, aerodynamic loadings are updated in accordance with the new geometry of the deflected blade. This process is repeated till the convergence is met. Different operational conditions consisting of stand-by, start-up, power production and normal shut-down events are investigated. It is revealed that stress components vary significantly in the event of power production at the rated wind speed; while it is less pronounced for the events of normal shut-down and stand-by.

In this paper, profile error measurement method of a turbine blade using 3D-scanner is developed. The method begins with scanning the upper and lower sides of the blade on which three small balls are attached, and constructs a solid measurement model by registering the two scanned surfaces. Airfoils are derived from the model at each interval by intersecting it with a plane, and arranged with design airfoils. The $2^2$ factorial design search method is engaged in arranging the two airfoils, from which the main blade parameters including the edge radius are computed. The developed measurement technique is applied to practical blade manufacturing and validates its effectiveness.

Variation of dynamic characteristics of a low pressure turbine blade with crack length is studied in this paper via both experiments and finite element model. Since most of the turbine blades used in domestic power plants are imported from abroad, it is necessary to understand their dynamic behavior in advance. When experimentally obtained natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared with those from FEM results, they are close to each other in their magnitude. Then, it is more feasible to use finite element model for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of a blade under various operation conditions (rotation speed, temperature, etc) as well as with a crack in the blade.

Surrogate model based shape optimization methodology to enhance performance of a centrifugal pump has been implemented in this work. Design variables, such as blade number and blade angles defining the pump impeller blade shape were selected and a three-level full factorial design approach was used for efficiency enhancement. A three-dimensional simulation using Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations for the performance analysis was carried out after designing the geometries of the impellers at the design points. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was used for steady incompressible flow simulations. The optimized impeller incurred lower losses by shifting the trailing edge towards the impeller pressure side. It is observed that the surrogates are problem dependent and most accurate surrogate does not deliver the best design always.
