The heartwood (HW) of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) has usually a reddish color. But some trees have black-colored heartwood (BHW). BHW of Japanese cedar has a low commercial value because of the appearance. Therefore, in this study, a comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the differences in the physical, mechanical, and inorganic element properties, and decay resistance of red-colored heartwood tree (RHW) and BHW. The physical properties showed significant difference between sapwood (SW) and HW, but there was no significant difference between RHW and BHW. From the results of mechanical properties, no significant difference was recognized in SW of RHW, HW of RHW, SW of BHW, and HW of BHW. There were decay resistance differences between RHW and BHW in HW, and between HW and SW in both RHW and BHW, respectively. The magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) contents had significant differences between SW and HW in both RHW and BHW. In this present study, the decay resistances and the contents of Mg and K were higher in HW than in SW both for RHW and BHW, while these measurements were lower in RHW than in BHW. Therefore, BHW was considered to be worthy as a high-quality material as RHW.

The calibration technique of Time Resolved Laser Induced Incandescence was investigated both experimentally and numerically by using standard-sized carbon black particles for the instantaneous soot measurement at exhaust tail pipe in engine. The carbon black particles (19nm, 25nm, 45nm and 58nm) used in this study are similar, though not identical, to soot particle generated from flame not only in morphology but also in micro-structure. The amount of soot loading in flow was controled by a diluted gas (nitrogen) and was measured by the gravimetric method at exhaust pipe in calibrator. The successful calibrations of primary particle size and soot mass fraction were carried out at the range from 19nm to 58nm and from $0.25mg/m^3$ to $37mg/m^3$ respectively. And based on these results the numerical simulation of LII signal was tuned and the effect of an exhaust temperature variation on the decay rate of LII signal was corrected.
Cotyledon Black Decay (CBD) on soybean sprout mimics the black spot due to microbial infection. CBD, not visible or predictable at seedlot state, for some reason, shows up exclusively on cotyledon of soybean sprout during sprouting process. Such an incidence rate fluctuated from 0.8 to 19.5% over three years from 2004. We suspected some pod-infecting anthracnose fungi and/or pod-blight pathogen, or pod-sucking bean bug, one of the major pests of soybean, might have involved, of which we ruled out fungal pathogen because it was preventable through heat treatment, a proven method for seedlot disinfestation. The healthy seeds artificially fed by bean bug for one to seven days were sprouted, and 6 to 41% of the soybean sprout revealed the CBD mimic to those occurred in soybean sprout from previous commercial seedlot screening experiments. This finding is the first report to confirm that bean bug damage to pod at $R_8$ stage is directly responsible for the CBD, which did not concur with any other deleterious effects on sprouting such as reduction in hypocotyls elongation and rooting except unsightly sprout quality. However, earlier feeding either at green pod or greenish yellow pod stage ($R_6$ -early $R_7$ stage) resulted in rather severe damages, which strikingly reduced hypocotyls growth to about one forth to about two third, as well as the reduction in rates of seed germination.
Wood of black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) and bark of poplar(Populus alba x glandulosa), ash(Fraxinus rhynchophylla) and elm(Ulmus davidiana var. japonica) trees were collected, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$(7:3. v/v), fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and $H_2O$. then freeze dried to get some dark brown powder for bioactive tests. Decay-resistant activity was tested using wood block specimens from the hardwood trees and expressed by weight loss rate. Black locust specimens indicated the best anti-decaying property and poplar blocks were the worst. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were also investigated against each wood or bark extractives. Antifungal and antibacterial activities did not indicate any significant differences among the tested fractions. In antioxidant activity. ${\alpha}$-tocopherol one of natural antioxidants. and BHT, one of synthetic antioxidants, were used as references to compare with the antioxidant activities of the extracted fractions. Ethylacetate fraction of ash bark indicated the highest activity besides BHT in this test and all fractions of black locust extractives also indicated higher activities compared with the other fractions.
Changes in accumulated pulsed photostimulated luminescene (PPSL) signals were observed after storage, which affected the ability to detect irradiation in black and white peppers. The PPSL curves were accumulated linearly during the 120 s measurement times, and PPSL signals increased according to irradiation doses. Threshold levels of black and white peppers were below 557$\pm$220 and 503$\pm$92 photon counts in 60 s, and below 679$\pm$351 and 812 $\pm$ 648 photon counts in 120 s, respectively. The PPSL signals of black and white peppers linearly increased with irradiation dose up to 5 kGy, but very little from 5~10 kCy. The accumulated PPSL signals of irradiated black and white peppers had higher decay rates when stored in normal room conditions than in a darkroom Detection of irradiation was possible for up to 12 months after irradiation, if the samples were stored in a darkroom.

In order to investigate the characteristics of resistance and conduction of vulcanized styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)/ carbon black (CB) composites, surface/ volume resistivity, point to point resistance, decay time, and electrical conduction experiments with four different kinds of non-conductive carbon black were measured. When about 50phr of carbon black were loaded in SBR, all resistivites suddenly decreased and critical region (Rc) was shown. Current densities of SBR/CB composites showed critical point (Pc) and increased with the electric fields. Electrical conduction mechanisms of SBR/CB composites could be considered as the ohmic conduction at low electric fields and the space charge limited conduction (SCLC) at high electric fields, respectively.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the radioactivity levels and radiological impacts of representative black sand samples collected from different locations in the Rashid area, Egypt. These samples were prepared and then analyzed using the high-resolution gamma ray spectroscopy technique with a high-purity germanium detector. The activity concentration ($A_c$), minimum detectable activity, absorbed gamma dose rate, external hazard index ($H_{ex}$), annual effective dose rate equivalent, radium equivalent, as well as external and internal hazard index ($H_{ex}$ and $H_{in}$, respectively) were estimated based on the measured radionuclide concentration of the $^{238}U$($^{226}Ra$) and $^{232}Th$ decay chains and $^{40}K$. The activity concentrations of the $^{238}U$, $^{232}Th$ decay series and $^{40}K$ of these samples varied from $45.11{\pm}3.1Bq/kg$ to $252.38{\pm}34.3Bq/kg$, from $64.65{\pm}6.1Bq/kg$ to $579.84{\pm}53.1Bq/kg$, and from $403.36{\pm}20.8Bq/kg$ to $527.47{\pm}23.1Bq/kg$, respectively. The activity concentration of $^{232}Th$ in Sample 1 has the highest value compared to the other samples; this value is also higher than the worldwide mean range as reported by UNSCEAR 2000. The total absorbed gamma dose rate and the annual effective dose for these samples were found to vary from 81.19 nGy/h to 497.81 nGy/h and from $99.86{\mu}Sv/y$ to $612.31{\mu}Sv/y$, which are higher than the world average values of 59 nGy/h and $70{\mu}Sv/y$, respectively. The $H_{ex}$ values were also calculated to be 3.02, 0.47, 0.63, 0.87, 0.87, 0.51 and 0.91. It was found that the calculated value of $H_{ex}$ for Sample 1 is significantly higher than the international acceptable limit of <1. The results are tabulated, depicted, and discussed within national and international frameworks, levels, and approaches.
After being subjected to different cooking methods, small black beans (Rhynchosia nulubilis) were investigated in order to assess the effects of the retained bioactive compounds. Using uncooked, pan broiled, boiled, steamed, and pressure cooked beans, the inhibitory effects of MCF-7 cell migration were evaluated at protein concentrations of 40, 160, and $640{\mu}m/mL$, using the Boyden's chamber assay. All protein concentrations (40, 160, and $640{\mu}m/mL$) of pan broiled beans showed significant reduction (59.83, 32.48, and 21.37%, respectively) in the rate of cell migration to the lower chambers (p-value less than 0.001). Estimated cell migration rates correlated to the exponential decay between experimentally measured cell migration rates and converted samples. The range of estimated cell migration rate for each 100 mg/mL of cooked sample was as follows: pan broiled (21.16%), boiled (22.48%), steamed (22.48%), pressure cooked (29.52%), and uncooked (35.03%) beans. Our study indicated that selective modifications of cooking methods for small black beans, such as pan broiling, ameliorated the inhibitory effects of MCF-7 cell migration. This suggests that optimized cooking methods increase the nutritional contents of the cooked food.
We use three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to investigate nonlinear gravitational responses of gas to, and the resulting drag force on, a massive perturber moving on a circular orbit through a uniform gaseous medium. We assume that the background medium is non-rotating and adiabatic with index 5/3, and represent the perturber using a Plummer potential with softening radius a. This work extends our previous study where we showed that the drag force on a straight-line trajectory is proportional to a0.45 if the perturber is massive enough. This indicates that the orbital decay of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) near galaxy centers may take much longer than the prediction of the linear force formula applicable for low-mass perturbers. For the circular orbits are considered, however, we find that the nonlinear drag force becomes independent of a, but dependent instead on the orbital radius R as $\varpropto$ R0.5. This suggests not only that the choices of large values of a, for resolution issues, in recent numerical experiments for mergers of SMBH, are marginally acceptable, but also that the gaseous drag indeed provides an efficient mean for the orbtial decay of SMBHs.
In 2018, symptoms of black rot on apple (Malus pumila var. dulcissima KOIDZ) cv. Fuji were observed in Yeongcheon-si, Korea. The fruit decay symptoms consisted of purple pimples spots, black rot around the seed cavity (calyx end), mummified fruit. To isolate the causal agent, small fragment (2 to 3 mm) of decayed tissue from the lesion margin were placed on WA or PDA. Fungal colonies on PDA produced dense white aerial mycelium, becoming dark gray with age. Pycnidia and conidia were observed under a light microscopy. The shapes of conidia were aseptate, ovoid, rounded at both ends, and $21.7-28.3{\times}9.9-15.3{\mu}m$. Based on morphological and cultural characteristics, this fungus was identified as Diplodia seriata. To confirm its identity, two loci (ITS and ${\beta}$-tubulin) were sequenced for molecular identification. BLAST searches indicated 100% identity with D. seriata. A pathogenicity test was conducted with isolates on Fuji apples. The apples were inoculated with mycelial plugs (5 mm) from 7-day-old cultures of the putative pathogens. All inoculated apples developed rot symptoms identical to the original symptoms, from which D. seriata were reisolated, fulfilling Koch's postulates. This study is the first report of black rot caused Diplodia seriata on apple.
