  • Out of 20 primers, 6 generated a total of 1,11 major and minor RAPD bands, producing approximately 4.2 average polymorphic bands pe primer in shortnecked clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population from Anmyeondo. The bandsharing value altered form 0.15 to 0.74, with the average of 0.5, as calculated by bandsharing analysis. The RAPD profiles obtained with DNAs of two populations from Anmyeondo and Seocheon, respectively, were considerably different (0.20 and 0.51, respectively). The varying degrees of difference among populations may also be of relevance to the retricted hybridization of wild bivalve. Besides gene mapping and breeding applications, PCR-RAPD system could be very useful for the rapid certification and quality control of seed production and for every projects based on PCR amplification of specific bivalve DNA fragments.

  • The bivalve Malleus regula ($Forssk{\aa}l$ in Niebuhr, 1775) is reported for the first time from Korea. This is the second species of Malleidae reported from this country. Since the species is quite variable, comparisons were made with the original description and descriptions in the literature; some taxonomic comments were also made. Global warming and possible changes in the northward-flowing Tsushima Current may account for the addition of new mollusk species to the island's fauna.

  • Eutima japonica Uchida, 1925, a bivalve-inhabiting hydrozoan was collected for the first time in Korea, associating with Mytilus galloprovincialis. The morphology of male medusae of this hydrozoan is clarified by culture and described as well as other developmental stages. As the present material from Korea is in good accord with that of the northern Japanese form of E. japonica, so the geographical distribution of the northern form of this species is widened, Japan, China and Korea. Green fluorescent protein distribution pattern of this medusa is also described and compared with that of the most related species Eutima sapinhoa Narchi and Hebling, 1975.

  • Three new copepod species of Anthessius are described as associates of mollusks. Anthessius tuberculatus n. sp. associated with the bivalve Asaphis violascens (Forsskal in Niebuhr, 1775) in Kosrae, Micronesia bears a pair of dorsal tubercles on the fifth pedigerous somite. Anthessius rarus n. sp. is associated with the aplysiid gastropod Dolabella auricularia (Lightfoot, 1786) in Bohol, the Philippines and has elongate caudal rami which are about 5.2 times as long as wide. Anthessius cucullatus n. sp. associated with the aplysiid gastropod Aplysia kurodai Baba, 1937 in Korea has a hood-like dorsal expansion on genital double-somite of the female.

  • This study reports the pagurid hermit crab Porcellanopagurus japonicus in Korean waters for the first time. This species has a right cheliped larger than the left one, reduced and globular abdomen, and symmetrical uropods. Porcellanopagurus japonicus is similar to P. nihonkaiensis, a previously reported congeneric species in Korea, but also has distinguished morphological and ecological characters. There are currently issues with the Korean scientific name for P. japonicus, we suggest a reasonable Korean scientific name of this organism with its etymology. In addition, this species inhabits bivalve shells, which is not a typical habitat for hermit crabs, and the unique habitats of this and several other Korean hermit crabs are reviewed.

  • Bivalve samples from 30 locations Korean coastal waters were analyzed to characterize the contamination with and distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). The congeners of PBDE in 30 bivalve samples were analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography with a high resolution mass detector. The levels of PBDEs in bivalve samples ranged from 0.092 to 13.5 ng/g wet weight. These values for PBDEs concentrations in bivalves from Korea were higher than or comparable to available values for bivalves from other countries. In the congener profiles, BDE-47 (mean contribution=42.2%) was predominant, followed by BDE-99 (23.1%), BDE-100 (11.9%) and BDE-154 (3.5%). Among the OCs analyzed, $\Sigma$PCBs and $\Sigma$DDTs levels were highest, followed by $\Sigma$HCHs, $\Sigma$CHLs and HCB. The wet weight based $\Sigma$PCBs and $\Sigma$DDTs ranged from 0.28 ng/g to 19.4 ng/g, and from 0.19 ng/g to 4.86 ng/g, respectively. The $\Sigma$PCBs and $\Sigma$DDT slevels in bivalves along the entire Korean coast were lower than those of the USA, and below the Food and Drug Administration (USA. FDA) limits for fish and shell fish. However, the human health criteria and wild life criteria of the USA. Environmental Protection Agency (USA. EPA) were exceeded for DDE and $\Sigma$HCHs at most of the sampling points.
