  • The stress-strain relationship of an unsaturated soil was analyzed by Bishop stress descriptions in this study. The failure criteria could be defined uniquely by the Bishop stress and were also independent of matric suctions. In the low level of matric suctions the failure criteria have a linear relationship and the estimated criterion fitted the measured accurately. Deformation moduli in the small strain level were linearly increased generally with respect to Bishop stress.

  • In this study, the triaxial behaviour of an unsaturated soil was analyzed by Bishop stress descriptions. $K_0$ stress paths and those final values were independent of matric suctions after describing by the Bishop stress. The failure criteria could be defined uniquely by the Bishop stress and were also independent of matric suctions. In the low level of matric suctions the failure criteria have a linear relationship and the estimated criterion fits the measured accurately. The variable ${\chi}$ for describing the Bishop stress was a constant theoretically under the low level of matric suctions. The suction stress could be defined at zero deviatoric stress in the failure criteria and increased linearly with respect to matric suctions in both the theory and the experiments.

  • The paper compared the Bishop methed to the Fellenius method in the analysis of slope stability. Laboratory model test was carried out in the case of seepage flow considered. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows; 1. The slice pieces of 10 were enough to analysis the slope stability. 2. The safety factor. by the Fellenius method was lower than the Bishop method by the 96 to 97% in the case of no seepage flow and by the 95 to 96% in the case of seepage flow considered. 3. Besides the parameter of soil and slope, the safety factor of slope was influenced by the height of slope. This phenomena was distinct in the height of height less than 10 meters. 4. In the case of clay, there was no difference in the safety factor of slope between Fellenius and Bishop rnethod. The safety factors of slope with the seepage flow considered were lower than those with no see-page flow. 5. The influence of cohesion on the safety factor was more significant in the Bishop method than in the Fellenius method. 6. The slope failure of model test of A and B soil samples with high permeability coefficient was taken place slightly in vicinity of toe by the concentration of stress and gradually increased 7. Under condition of same slope height, the shapper the slope, the shorter the radius and the center of critical circle appered downward and finally failure of slope occured inside the slope.

  • The importance of unsaturated state in various geo-engineering problems has led to the advance of mechanical constitutive model emulating behavior of unsaturated soils in response to thermo-hydro-mechanical loading. Elasto-plastic mechanical constitutive model for unsaturated soil is formulated based on Bishop's effective stress. Effective stress and temperature are main variables in constitutive equation, and incremental formulation of constitutive relationship is derived to compute stress update and stiffness tensor. Numerical simulations involving coupled THM processes are conducted to discuss numerical stability and applicability of developed constitutive model: one-dimensional test, tri-axial compression test, and clay-buffering at high level radioactive waste disposal. Numerical results demonstrated that developed model can predict very complex behavior of coupled THM phenomena and is applicable to geo-engineering problems under various environmental conditions, as well as interpret typical behavior of unsaturated soils.

  • In this study, undrained shear test was performed$K_o$ consolidation in order to study the shear strength characteristics of oysters-marine clay mixtures for three mixed ratios(0%, 25% and 50%). And, in order to study shear strength characteristics of oysters-marine clay mixtures, three different effective vertical stresses(200, 300 and 400kPa) were applied for the $K_o$ consolidation tests. In addition three different axial strain rates(0.005%/min, 0.05%/min, 0.5%/min) were applied for the case of effective vertical stress, 300kPa. According to experimental results, the more mixed ratios were increased, the more deviator stress was increased by crushing effect of oysters particles. especially, when effective vertical stress is 300kPa and mixed ratio increase from 25% to 50%, Test shows the increase of shear strength. But axial strain rate was not effect on the undrained shear strength. In the comparison and analysis that are based on the values of tests on the oysters-marine clay mixtures and the Mayne & Bishop's empiric formula, the undrained shear strength ratio shows a similar pattern of the tests. But for the prediction of the coefficient of the pore water pressure, the value of empiric formula shows more overestimated than the values of the tests at 0%, mixture ratio.

  • In order study, experimental stress-strain relationships were achieved for various suctions by triaxial tests. A failure envelop was occurred on a plane in p-q-$\psi$ space, since the level of matric suction is in the small range. It was found that the failure criteria could be defined uniquely by the Bishop stress and were also independent of matric suctions. At the level of small strain, deformation moduli were evaluated according to matric suctions by fitting to Ramberg-Osgood model. It was found that deformation moduli increase as matric suctions increase.

  • Bearing capacity of shallow foundations is often determined for either dry or saturated soils. In some occasions, foundations may be subjected to external loading which is inclined and/or eccentric. In this study, the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations resting on partially saturated coarse-grained cohesionless and fine-grained cohesive soils subjected to a wide range of combined vertical (V) - horizontal (H) - moment (M) loadings is rigorously evaluated using the well-established limit equilibrium method. The unified effective stress approach as well as the suction stress concept is effectively adopted so as to simulate the behaviour of the underlying unsaturated soil medium. In order to obtain the bearing capacity, four equilibrium equations are solved by adopting Coulomb failure mechanism and Bishop effective stress concept and also considering a linear variation of the induced matric suction beneath the foundation. The general failure loci of the shallow foundations resting on unsaturated soils at different hydraulic conditions are presented in V - H - M spaces. The results indicate that the matric suction has a marked influence on the bearing capacity of shallow foundations. In addition, the effect of induced suction on the ultimate bearing capacity of obliquely-loaded foundations is more pronounced than that of the eccentrically-loaded footings.

  • It has been reported that the failure of Carsington Dam in Eng1and occured due to the existence of a thin yellow clay layer which was not identified during the design work, and due to pre-existing shears of the clay layer. The slope stability analyses during the design work, which utilized traditional circular arc type failure method and neglected the existence of the clay layer, showed a safety factor of 1.4. However, the post-failure analyses which utilized translational failure mode considering the clay layer and the pre-existing shear deformation revealed the reduction of safety factor to unity. The post-failure analysis assumed 10。 inclination of the horizontal forces onto each slice based on the results of finite element analyses. In this paper, Bishop's simplified method, Janbu method, and Morgenstern-Price method were used for the comparison of both circular and translational failure analysis methods. The effects of the pre-existing shears and subsquent movement were also considered by varying the soil strength parameters and the pore pressure ratio according to the given soi1 parameters. The results showed factor of safefy 1.387 by Bishop's simplified method(STABL) which assumed circular arc failure surface and disregarding yellow clay layer and pre-failure material properties. Also the results showed factor of safety 1.093 by Janbu method(STABL) and 0.969 by Morgenstern-Price method(MALE) which assumed wedge failure surface and considerd yellow clay layer using post failure material properties. In addition, dam behavior was simulated by Cam-Clay model FEM program. The effects of pore pressure changes with loading and consolidation, and strength reduction near or at failure were also considered based on properly assumed stress-strain relationship and pore pressure characteristics. The results showed that the failure was initiated at the yellow clay layer and propagated through other zones by showing that stress and displacement were concentrated at the yel1ow clay layer.

  • The slope stability analysis of Carsington dam is performed, considering the effects of pore water pressure, slip surface configuration, lateral stress and various shear strengths. Without yellow clay layer, the Bowles' and STABR programs were used to find the circular slip surface which has the maximum safety factor. At last using the Morgenstern-Price method, the effects of rainfall and strength of yellow clay were mainly considered in the back analyses after failure. It was found that (1) the potential slip was not predicted in the analysis based on the modified Bishop method without considering the yellow clay layer, and (2) the crllapse of dam had been occurred according to the critical shear strength of the yellow clay and pore water pressure increase.

  • This work presents a comprehensive study on the surface energy effect on the axial frequency analyses of AFGM nanorods in cylindrical coordinates. The AFGM nanorods are considered to be thin, relatively thick, and thick. In thin nanorods, effects of the inertia of lateral motions and the shear stiffness are ignored; in relatively thick nanorods, only the first one is considered; and in thick nanorods, both of them are considered in the kinetic energy and the strain energy of the nanorod, respectively. The surface elasticity theory which includes three surface parameters called surface density, surface stress, and surface Lame constants, is implemented to consider the size effect. The power-law form is considered for variation of the material properties through the axial direction. Hamilton's principle is used to derive the governing equations and boundary conditions. Due to considering the surface stress, the governing equation and boundary condition become inhomogeneous. After homogenization of them using an appropriate change of variable, axial natural frequencies are calculated implementing harmonic differential quadrature (HDQ) method. Comprehensive results including effects of geometric parameters and various material properties are presented for a wide range of boundary condition types. It is believed that this study is a comprehensive one that can help posterities for design and manufacturing of nano-electro-mechanical systems.
